Epilogue (エピローグ Epirōgu?) is the four hundred and twenty-fourth chapter of Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia.

Summary[]

In Washington, U.S.A., weather reporter Meryl mentions how they have clear and sunny skies across the entire country, apologizing for being off the mark for expecting stormy weather all week. She says that they will be expecting strong winds, as the gust that blew that day came in the wake of a great battle, and to stay tuned for updates on what sort of effects will come cause of it.

It has been a week since the conclusion of the Final War, and the restoration efforts that were stalled after the Jaku Hospital Raid picked back up at a breakneck pace. Heroes from America and all around the world arrived to provide support and resources in rescue and rebuilding. Big Red Dot tells a reporter that after seeing the wild fight they could not sit back and do nothing, while Mr. Uraraka mentions how the survey bureau sent them the plans so they can start with rebuilding. They then remark that before the advent of exceptional, a restoration on a similar scale would have taken a decade, but with so many Quirks working together, it should not be long for things go back to normal.

At Central Hospital, the doctor tells Katsuki and his parents that his body won't ever go back to normal, with his right arm completely stitched up, and despite the surgery won't get better than that. He continues that they had to join and set together a large amount of bone segments, and they can't guarantee any amount of rehabilitation will give him back use of his arm. He suggests prosthetics like what Mirko got to continue working as a hero, but Katsuki declines, since his Quirk comes from the palms, and thinks about how “he” never had one. He shouts to bring on the rehab, but the doctor says he must only do low-level exercise, reminding him that he would be dead if it wasn't for Edgeshot suturing and restarting his heart, having no idea how he managed to keep fighting, or why he travelled so many kilometers right afterward, telling him he was given a second shot at life and heeded the call, so for now to focus on rest.

In another room, Izuku and All Might are both recovering together, which All Might says is Naomasa's doing, since it's easier to guard. Izuku asks how All Might is feeling, which he says they never had to use so many bolts to put someone back together, while Izuku says that he's starting to feel his arms again. He then reflects on how he couldn't save Tenko's life, that even after reaching into his heart and shattering his hatred, he remained the leader of the League of Villains until the end. All Might then asks Izuku what was the look on his face in the end, and Izuku recalls after he told Tomura that it’s already been destroyed, he responds that it depends on what they do tomorrow, and to make sure he "do your damn best" with a genuine smile in his face. All Might says that if what he saw wasn't a crying boy, then he thinks his soul was saved, and he did his duty with One For All.

All Might asks if he passed it on, since he felt it was happening, and Izuku responds that he can still feel some of the embers within him, just as Katsuki barges into the room, despite his parents yelling at him for moving. Izuku is happy to see Katsuki, but he looks confused hearing him mention the embers, causing him to realize that he's going to be Quirkless. Izuku responds yes, but also adds that he was born without a Quirk to begin with, so he isn't too broken up about it, since the time he had with it gave him a glimpse at his amazing dream. But suddenly, to Izuku's shock, Katsuki begins to tear up, feeling distraught thinking about how he's been treating him until now, and that he thought he would still be able to keep competing with him. Izuku tries to calm him down, since he still has the embers, and wonders if his body being banged up is making him emotionally vulnerable.

All Might then tells the both of them that they have grown so strong, and are so different since the day he met them. That on the day when he first ran off, Izuku was already a great hero, but now the way he encourages the world to get back up on their feet, he is a great hero to all of them too. He then tells Katsuki that it's thanks to him that he got the opportunity to tell them both all of that, and deeply thanks his pair of great heroes. While Izuku and Katsuki both smile and tear up, Shoto is shown recovering, a tray with scales being removed, and Ochaco looking out into the city while clutching her chest. Izuku reflects on how when he was a little, he thought that when the big battle was won, peace would be restored just like that. However, he knows their tale can’t end like that. While their fight may be over, until they can lead the way to their bright future, they just go even further beyond. Sometime later, a scarred and partially head-shaven Izuku joins back with his class as they return to U.A. High School.

Author's Comment[]

Usually, endings should be quick, but this isn’t the kind of manga that can just end after defeating the villain. So it’ll go on a little longer. Now back to the title.
