Design (DESIGN (デザイン) Dezain?) is the four hundred and nineteenth chapter of Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia.

Summary[]

The re-emerged All For One berates Izuku for destroying One For All and Yoichi, but notes that thanks to Tenko's spiritual defeat in the subconscious realm at Izuku's hands, he's once again able to regain control. He then speaks to the slowly disintegrating Tomura, calling him no more than a superego unable to relinquish his own life, taking his guidance all the way and yet amounting to nothing. Tomura says he doesn't understand what he's talking about, and All For One reiterates that none of "his" decisions have ever been his own. Tomura claims that he chose to do all of them, but All For One responds that him believing so was key, or else his strength of will would be stunted, thus it was was crucial to twist his illusion of free will.

All for One reveals that through his encounters with Daigoro Banjo aka Lariat, and En Tayutai aka Smoke-Eater, he learned that in order to secure One For All, he needed to surpass their willpower. Whilst he was on the defensive against All Might, he searched for a soul that would grind away at his willpower, a quest for the most powerful of emotions, born from the heart's suppression of the id, and cultivated a seedbed for hatred to grow.

He recalls a memory where he told Kotaro about how Heroes never show up to aid when they're actually needed, and that children need siblings to help each other out. All For One then states their daughter, as the first born, was too far along, so he did everything he could to not stand out, but give a few nudges from the shadows. He reveals he stole the Quirk Factor Tenko inherited from his parents before it could appear, he encouraged his father's strict ways, gave him something to aspire to, and bided his time for the right moment, as he brought him home one day from the park, holding his hand while secretly giving him Decay.

Further, All for One reveals he selected a "specific Quirk" from the Doctor's facility and stripped it of the ability to reverse its effects, leaving an incomplete copy engineered specifically for destruction before bestowing it onto Tenko. Tomura breaks down in agony as the revelations rush toward him, as All For One declares that all his tragedies, ordeals, rejection, and validation, were all granted by him. Tomura's body in his mind shatters as memories of those he fought in the past flash through his mind, while All For One continues to shout at him shaming his "unwavering heart" and to begone from his body. He thinks about how his spirit is now his to delete, intending to have used it as a last resort after stealing One For All, but decides now is the time since that's no longer in the cards. Izuku shouts at All For One as he is rejected from the mindscape and they both return back in the real world.

"All For One", now back in control of Tomura's body, laments that Yoichi is gone, so his intermediate plan is fouled. A screaming voice of a lingering memory continues to ring in his head, so he forms a version of one of Tomura's stuffed hands over his mouth to silence it. "All For One" examines the body, noting the spiritual damage has taken its toll, that Tomura's anger and hatred are gone, along with Decay. With the vessel he searched for and cultivated over years now ruined, and his little brother gone, he decides there is nothing left but to move onto his hollow final goal, world domination. A recovering Izuku calls out to All For One, declaring that he won't let him, only to fall forward onto himself, realizing both his arms are completely destroyed.

"All For One" comments that neither of them emerged unscathed, and even as Izuku screams out in pain trying to move, he believes it's still not over yet. "All For One" states that loss endangers strength, which is a narrative he intends to establish, calling it a pitiful end for a child with nothing to lose in the first place. He is about to attack, when suddenly Cellophane appears, using his Tape to hold "All For One" back, who proceeds to comment that his presence was negligible enough that his focus on Izuku obscured his warning from Danger Sense. Cellophane declares they're here to save him, when Tailman and Sugarman also arrive, blasting the villain back with their Tornado Tail Dance and Sugar Knuckle Ultimate Moves. Izuku is happy to see them all safe, as Eraser Head emerges from a cloudy-looking Warp Gate, apologizing for the delay.

    • He manipulated Kotaro into having another child, and stole Tenko's Quirk Factor before it manifested.
    • He further manipulated Tenko's upbringing by encouraging Tenko's admiration of heroes through his friends, as well as influencing Kotaro's strict, abusive behaviour towards him by stirring up his lingering resentment towards heroes.
    • At a later time, he walked Tenko back home in disguise and used the opportunity to bestow Decay, which is revealed to be an altered copy of the Overhaul Quirk with its restoration aspects removed.
    • It is also revealed that Overhaul spent time in an orphanage owned by Kyudai Garaki as a potential vessel for All For One before joining the Shie Hassakai.
