Overlay (オーバーレイ Ōbārei?) is the four hundred and fourteenth chapter of Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia.

Summary[]

In order to control his overly exhausted body, Deku conjures Blackwhip all over himself, allowing him to regain his movement. Daigoro and En react in shock over how instantly he was able to jump into action and creatively utilize the Quirk, while Kudo responds he's working perfectly since he's not driven by duty, but rather respect, and his admiration for Quirks will make One For All shine even brighter.

Deku thinks about how he'll have to deal with Tomura's speed without Gearshift so that he can transfer Kudo into him, having no choice but to bet on the plan. He remembers how in order to transfer One For All, the recipient has to take in some of the wielder's DNA, and that it can even be given to an unwilling recipient; Kudo recalls how he and Bruce originally tested this theory and notes how long past their deaths, they're still beholden to their duty. Deku decides he'll slip his blood into Tomura's wounds as the transfer agent, but is also aware that due to his Super Regeneration, his wounds don't last for long - the only opening is the moment of impact, and since he's on the verge of passing out due to the recoil from Gearshift, he has to land his next hit precisely.

Tomura observes Deku, recalling how his last attack gave him an ominous feeling, enough to make him slice off his own arm before it connected. He understands that Deku has some scheme planned and figures that with his body agonizing while having trouble breathing, a normal person would focus on clinging to life in this state, only to realize who he's talking about while scratching his neck. He says it is fine and that he'll just keep destroying Deku, the country, and everything else as long as it takes. As the two charge toward the ground, Deku declares this is where he'll transfer it, while Tomura says he'll kill him.

Deku activates Smokescreen, which confuses En since he considered it the most useless of the Quirks, while Tomura pushes through and touches the ground, saying all he needs is a dose of Decay, then his plans will be for naught since he'll have to defend instead. But suddenly, Deku uses a barrage of Blackchains to rip the earth from underneath Tomura, lunging them into the air and preventing the spreading. Tomura wonders when he did this, and Daigoro realizes when he was first sent flying back, he shot strands of Blackchains underground to carve up the earth, waiting to use it, which Tomura likens to U.A.'s Anti-Decay system.

Danger Sense then activates causing Tomura to reach out and grab something behind him, only to notice it's just his cape attached to a Blackwhip used as a decoy, which reminds En of the tactic used against Lady Nagant. Tomura is confused since Search is indicating that the light on the tendril is Deku's, only to see blood on it and realize Search reacted to it. Bewildered, Tomura further discovers that the light isn't even Deku's, wondering where he is, and by the time he figures out what is going on, it is too late as Deku re-emerges from behind, charging at him.

Aware that Search indicates the locations of those the user has seen, Deku gambled on the possibility that Search would recognize the other One For All users too, as his intention to transfer Kudo's vestige allowed him to split off and reside in his blood. By launching the blood straight at Tomura, Deku was able to create an opening to get up into his face, exploiting the fact that he can track him with Search while using Smokescreen to make him misjudge his position for the sneak attack. En reacts surprisingly to Deku making such effective use of his Quirk, as they recall back to how he admires each and every Quirk.

Izuku transfers Gearshift to Tomura

Deku successfully transfers Gearshift to Tomura.

Tomura's body begins to instinctively re-enter its "absolute defense" form as fingers start to form around him, knowing his body is trying to reject what is coming, and that he can't afford to take this hit. Before Tomura can touch him, Deku executes a point-blank punch to Tomura's stomach, successfully transferring Gearshift along with Kudo's vestige. He tells Deku not to let it weigh on him, since he was only ever a phantom, and before Tomura can make use of him, he successfully hits the scar in Tomura's soul, causing Tomura to react in shock and pain from the recoil.

Unexpectedly, Deku sees visions of Dabi and Himiko from the day they first met Tomura, followed by visions of Shoto on the day of their match in the U.A. Sports Festival, and of Spinner meeting Tomura. He is confused what is going on, as Yoichi realizes the two's memories are blending together. En yells for Deku not to let up, since Kudo's plan appears to be working but it's still not enough, as Tomura struggles to recover, so Deku prepares to keep going.

Chapter Notes[]

  • Deku prepares their plan to transfer Kudo into Tomura's system.
  • Deku prevents Tomura's Decay attack by using Blackchains he planted earlier to pull up the chunk of earth.
    • He also uses Smokescreen alongside Blackwhip encased with Kudo's blood to catch Tomura off guard, allowing him to successfully attack him and inject Kudo and Gearshift.
  • Kudo attacks part of Tomura's soul, just as Deku and Tomura's memories begin to blend together, as they see Tomura's first meetings with Dabi, Himiko, and Spinner, as well as Deku's fight with Shoto at the Sports Festival.
