Kathryn Janeway (hologram)

The hologram of Kathryn Janeway, also known as Hologram Janeway, was a holographic training advisor on the USS Protostar based on Captain Kathryn Janeway and modeled on Janeway's physical appearance in the early 2370s, complete with uniform. She was programmed to assist the crew of the Protostar and was design-intended to only offer advice and maintain the ship's lower-level functions. She initially had some limits to her reasoning capabilities, unable to determine that a group of alien youths in control of the ship were not in fact Starfleet cadets, and simply fit the facts she could determine within her operating parameters. Although Hologram Janeway was eventually destroyed, (PRO: "Supernova, Part 2") The Doctor was able to save a copy of her program using an EMH backup module before the Protostar was launched through time. Hologram Janeway was subsequently upgraded to the Emergency Command Hologram of the new USS Prodigy while also remaining the training advisor for her young crew. (PRO: "Ouroboros, Part II")

Origins[]

This holographic duplicate of Janeway was intended to accompany Captain Chakotay and his crew on the Protostar's journey to the Delta Quadrant, with the real Janeway joking that this was the only way a version of her would willingly travel back to the Delta Quadrant after her time there as captain of the USS Voyager. The Janeway hologram originally was unable to physically interact with the material world beyond accessing the ship's consoles, but Gwyndala gave her an upgrade before the rescue mission to Tars Lamora that fixed this. (PRO: "A Moral Star, Part 1", "A Moral Star, Part 2")

The Janeway hologram initially had access only to non-essential systems and lacked command level authorization but was able to manually use consoles to inform herself of the status of the ship and its systems. (PRO: "Dream Catcher", "Terror Firma") She was eventually given command authorization by acting captain Dal R'El (PRO: "Ghost in the Machine") which enabled the hologram to manually command and destroy the ship from the captain's chair when the Protostar's automatic systems were down. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 2")

She was programmed with idiosyncrasies that Janeway was known for, particularly drinking coffee. At times she could have a holographic coffee mug appear in her hand and take a 'drink' from it. She would also sometimes stand with her hands on her hips as the real Janeway often did, particularly when giving instructions. She also was programmed with several memories of Admiral Janeway about her Irish Setter, Mollie, as well memories of Janeway's family members, including her father and her sister. Aboard the Protostar[]

Original voyage[]

During the USS Protostar's maiden voyage to the Delta Quadrant, it fell through a temporal anomaly to the year 2436. As Captain Chakotay sent a distress call, Hologram Janeway warned him that the ship was being boarded as Drednoks stormed the bridge and captured the Protostar crew. After capturing the Protostar, the Vau N'Akat placed the living construct aboard, intending to turn the ship into a weapon to destroy Starfleet. They also reprogramed Hologram Janeway, although mainly to a subtle degree. This included blocking all of Hologram Janeway's memories, adding overrides to her program that would enable the Vau N'Akat to take complete control of her, and a secret subroutine that would take over Hologram Janeway were the crew to decide not to continue on to Federation space, compelling the hologram to subconsciously take control of the Protostar and ensure the completion of its mission. Eventually, Chakotay and his crew managed to briefly escape and send the Protostar back through time in an effort to ensure that the Vau N'Akat couldn't use it. (PRO: "Preludes") By 2366, the ship was located deep inside of Tars Lamora and the Diviner established a prison colony there to search for the Protostar. (PRO: "Lost and Found", "Kobayashi")

Altered timeline[]

Due to the interference of Dal R'El, Jankom Pog, Zero and Maj'el at the Protostar's launch, the timeline was accidentally altered so that Chakotay and Adreek-Hu escaped with the ship, resulting in it not going to Tars Lamora. (PRO: "Who Saves the Saviors")

In 2385, with the help of Wesley Crusher, Dal, Jankom, Zero, Gwyndala, Rok-Tahk, and Murf found the Protostar on Icila where it had been stranded for ten years. The crew found a bitter Chakotay and the ship running on only emergency power, Chakotay and Adreek having dumped the antimatter and proto-core. Still active despite the limited power, Hologram Janeway convinced Chakotay to let the kids on the ship and explained to them what had happened in the years since the Protostar had landed on the planet. Despite having never met her future crew yet, Hologram Janeway felt an instant connection to them. (PRO: "Last Flight of the Protostar, Part I")

Hologram Janeway helped to explain the plan to refuel the Protostar and acted as the ship's navigator when it was turned into a sailing vessel. With the solar collectors destroyed, Hologram Janeway shut herself down and diverted her remaining power to the Bussard collectors so that the ship could collect the deuterium gas that it needed to escape the planet. Once power was fully restored, Hologram Janeway came back online and located the USS Voyager-A 3,000 light years away, meaning that they needed to build a new proto-core to meet up with the ship. After reaching Voyager, Hologram Janeway agreed to watch over Bribble for Rok while the rest of the crew beamed over to the other ship, shining a red light from her finger for Bribble to follow around like a cat. (PRO: "Cracked Mirror")

Hologram Janeway used the ship's vehicle replicator to replicate a ship to Ilthuran's specifications for the real Janeway, Chakotay, The Doctor, and Wesley Crusher to use in a rescue mission for the crew. The Doctor admitted that he'd never get used to working with Janeway's "holographic twin," and Hologram Janeway told him that they had their differences such as life experiences: she'd never left the Protostar while The Doctor had his mobile emitter that let him move about freely. The Doctor confessed to being nervous about going out in the field again after so long, but it would be good inspiration for his next holonovel if nothing else. The Doctor was flattered to hear that Hologram Janeway had read all of his work and was a big fan of his. (PRO: "Touch of Grey")

During the Battle of Solum, Hologram Janeway helped Chakotay fly the ship since the crew was on the planet, manning one of the consoles. However, Hologram Janeway was unusually snappish and rude, eventually admitting that it was because she was worried about her own future as all of her memories would have to be wiped in order to keep history on track, meaning that she would lose all that she had experienced and become. While Chakotay told her that they'd make a copy of her, Hologram Janeway knew that her program was too big to be copied. Chakotay promised that they'd find a way as they always did. When the ship was finally sent through the wormhole to Tars Lamora to be found in the past, Hologram Janeway's memories had to be erased in order to restore the timeline. However, Chakotay arranged for The Doctor to copy Hologram Janeway's program onto an EMH backup module, preserving it and pleasing her young crew that their mother figure would be saved this time. After saying a final goodbye, Hologram Janeway had the Protostar's computer reset her program, ready for when Dal and the others would eventually find the ship and her in the past. Aiding Dal R'El and his crew[]

Hologram Janeway was unintentionally activated for regular service in 2383, when the computer overheard Rok-Tahk utter the word "help" following the young crew's escape from Tars Lamora. Hologram Janeway mistook the young crew for Starfleet cadets and explained the history of the Federation and Starfleet to them. However, Dal R'El, worried about submitting to Starfleet's authority, repeatedly rejected her help until the ship got stuck in the gravity well of a white dwarf star. After the escape, Hologram Janeway taught her young crew how to use the Protostar's systems properly and the joys of autopilot. (PRO: "Lost and Found", "Starstruck", "Dream Catcher")

After finding a previously uncharted Class-M planet, she insisted upon exploration with Dal only agreeing after Hologram Janeway threatened to report the "cadets'" behavior to Starfleet. However, Gwyn was able to escape while they were gone and take control of the ship's systems, including Hologram Janeway, before being forced to abandon ship by Murder Planet's superorganism. Hologram Janeway managed to use the Protostar's photonic ship scrubbers to clear the tendrils off of the ship and discovered a system that she had no knowledge of. Under attack by the Diviner, the crew managed to use the protostar drive to escape. (PRO: "Dream Catcher", "Terror Firma")

After their escape, Hologram Janeway was stunned to discover that they had crossed 4,000 light years into the Gamma Quadrant, something that Hologram Janeway couldn't explain. She later introduced Dal and Jankom Pog to the ship's holodeck, but Hologram Janeway warned Dal that the Kobayashi Maru scenario was too advanced for him. Seeking answers about the drive, Gwyn and Zero questioned the hologram, but she fritzed out in the middle of explaining the ship's purpose and discovered that all of her memories about the ship and its purpose were classified. Hacking the data, Gwyn discovered that it was encrypted in the Vau N'Akat language despite Starfleet seemingly never encountering the species which Gwyn believed to be extinct aside from herself and the Diviner. Gwyn managed to unlock the data which proved to be corrupted but readable, though it would take months to get through it all. From the data, the crew learned that the Protostar was a prototype ship, the fastest in Starfleet. Rok-Tahk triggered a recording of Captain Chakotay's distress call, much to Hologram Janeway's shock. In the recording, Hologram Janeway informed Chakotay that they were being boarded and she realized that the "cadets" weren't her first crew. (PRO: "Kobayashi")

Following the disastrous first contact mission, Hologram Janeway attempted to bring the demoralized crew back together using the fox, chicken and grain problem without success. Out of frustration, Dal finally told Hologram Janeway the truth that the crew weren't Starfleet cadets and that they had instead stolen the Protostar and Zero filled her in on the details. Nevertheless, Hologram Janeway decided that they were still her crew, and she would continue to help them.

Shortly thereafter, the Protostar hit a tachyon storm that destabilized the proto-core and sent it into a warp core breach while fracturing the ship and crew into several different temporal phases. By adjusting her temporal settings, Hologram Janeway was able to transport herself into the various temporal phases to guide the crew in repairing the ship. Zero was able to create schematics for a warp matrix which Hologram Janeway brought to Dal. With her encouragement, Dal was able to build the device, but lacked a dilithium coupler to attach it to the proto-core. Gwyn's attempts to locate the part were interrupted by the arrival of Dred 2 who had been created by the Diviner with the vehicle replicator. Hologram Janeway recognized Drednok as the one who had attacked the Protostar's former crew, and accused him of corrupting her files and erasing her memories which Dred 2 stated was close, but not correct. Using Chakotay's voice and command code, Dred 2 had the computer delete Hologram Janeway's program.

After building the warp matrix, Rok managed to rebuild Hologram Janeway's program as her memory buffers had never gotten overwritten, although it took her 276 tries. Hologram Janeway helped Rok attach the warp matrix to the proto-core, fixing both it and the temporal anomaly. Hologram Janeway sadly admitted to Gwyn that Rok had been left alone for too long, and complimented the crew on their teamwork, stating that they looked like a real crew despite the kids' beliefs that they weren't one. As the crew prepared to jump to Starfleet, they received a message from the Diviner threatening the Unwanted in order to get them to return to Tars Lamora with the Protostar. Although she admitted that she didn't envy Dal's position, Hologram Janeway refused to give her opinion about whether or not to mount a rescue mission as it was ultimately the captain's choice alone. After Dal decided to go back, Hologram Janeway aided the crew in planning the rescue and received an upgrade from Gwyn that enabled her to interact with the material world. With the crew donning the Protostar's Starfleet uniforms, Hologram Janeway changed her own appearance to match and commended them, stating that despite the crew's doubts that they were Starfleet material, them risking everything on a seemingly impossible mission to save others and bring hope to a hopeless cause proved them wrong.

After arriving on Tars Lamora, Dal claimed to the Diviner that he had ordered Hologram Janeway to use the ship's self-destruct if the Diviner tried anything. As he took over the Protostar, the Diviner had Drednok override Hologram Janeway, causing her to take on a darker coloring and submit to the Diviner's control and do nothing as the Diviner double crossed the Protostar crew and left them to die. However, it was discovered that the crew had taken the ship's proto-core with them. (PRO: "A Moral Star, Part 1")

The Diviner had Hologram Janeway lock Gwyn in the ship's brig, but the Diviner later found the two on the bridge with Gwyn disabling the Protostar's shields. Hologram Janeway revealed that her being under the Diviner's control was merely an act, having been upgraded by Gwyn to prevent any of her father's overrides from working. Using her new ability to interact with the physical world, Hologram Janeway incapacitated the Diviner, but before Gwyn could disable the security protocols and lower the shields, the Diviner revealed that they could still save their people if the Diviner and Gwyn finished their mission as he had been sent back in time to save their homeworld. Wanting to learn the truth, Gwyn had the computer freeze Hologram Janeway so that her father could use the holodeck to show her. Following the defeat of the Diviner, Hologram Janeway arrived on the holodeck with Rok and Jankom and offered comfort to Rok over Gwyn's state. The crew left the Rev-12 to the Unwanted and the Diviner trapped on Tars Lamora and, once Gwyn had recovered, set a course for Starfleet, unaware that the real Kathryn Janeway was tracking the Protostar's proto-warp signature aboard the USS Dauntless. (PRO: "A Moral Star, Part 2")

After the rescue mission on Tars Lamora, Hologram Janeway aided in the crew's efforts to rack up good deeds in the hopes that it will help Starfleet to look past the fact that they had stolen a Federation starship. When the Protostar arrived at CR-721, Hologram Janeway helped Dal get ready and encouraged him to take a leap of faith and show Starfleet who he really was, causing Dal to hug her. When the station was destroyed, Hologram Janeway was unable to beam the crew out as the transport emitter had been damaged and Barniss Frex took the only escape pod. The crew attempted to jump to the Protostar in environmental suits, but Rok mistimed the jump. However, Hologram Janeway rescued the crew with the Protostar's tractor beam after the jump brought them close enough to the ship. (PRO: "Asylum")

Hologram Janeway wondered what would cause a Federation station to tear itself apart, triggering the return of Gwyn's memories. Gwyn showed the crew a recording of the Diviner revealing the truth to her about their mission and the living construct, but Hologram Janeway called it impossible as she would know if there was a destructive force of that magnitude aboard the ship, but Jankom pointed out that the Vau N'Akat had also wiped the existence of the proto-core from her memory. Searching the ship, the crew found a secret sub-deck below the bridge opened by Gwyn's heirloom that the living construct was hidden in. (PRO: "Asylum", "Let Sleeping Borg Lie")

The Protostar encountered a dormant Borg cube that had been shut down by a neurolytic pathogen and Hologram Janeway urged the crew to leave at once, explaining the danger of the Borg Collective. Gwyn suggested that the Borg might know a way to disarm the living construct and with the Borg sleeping, Dal decided to take the chance. Although she was against their plan, Hologram Janeway reluctantly agreed to help by telling the crew everything that she knew about the Borg. Hologram Janeway later detected the Borg scanning the ship and waking up after Zero accessed the vinculum, but she was unable to beam the crew out due to the cube's defenses interfering. After the rest of the crew was captured for assimilation, Hologram Janeway convinced Gwyn to disarm herself so that the Borg would ignore her and Zero managed to break free of the Collective's control and return the cube to dormancy long enough for them to escape. Zero subsequently reported that the Borg analysis of the living construct revealed that it could not be deactivated or removed. Hologram Janeway commended the crew for escaping from the Borg and how they were growing and adapting, and the decision was made to not go to Starfleet until the Protostar could make the journey safely. (PRO: "Let Sleeping Borg Lie")

The crew decided to answer a distress call from Planet 0042692. Much to the crew's shock, the two inhabitants that the crew first encountered identified them as being from "Star-Flight" and were named James'T and Sool'U after Captains James T. Kirk and Hikaru Sulu, and used 23rd century Federation technology. Hologram Janeway reported that while Kirk and Sulu were Starfleet legends, no Federation ship had been near that sector in over a hundred years and there was no record of first contact with the planet, meaning that the inhabitants weren't Starfleet. It was quickly discovered that the USS Enterprise had visited the planet during the late 2260s, but were unable to intervene in a danger due to the Prime Directive. As a result, Ensign David Garrovick had volunteered for a solo mission that left him stranded on the planet, but he promised that Starfleet would return one day to rid the planet of the curse from "the Gallows" plaguing it.

Jaknom, Gwyn, and Rok discovered that "the Gallows" was actually the crashed shuttle Galileo and the illness was caused by toxic runoff caused by the shuttle's leaking warp plasma, enabling Zero to synthesize an antidote, but leaving them trapped. Hologram Janeway was unable to beam the three out due to a subspace distortion field rendering her unable to get a lock on them without getting closer which would knock out the autopilot and Hologram Janeway. As a result, Dal enlisted three Enderprizians to help pilot the ship and had Hologram Janeway holographically change the control consoles to that of a mid-23rd century Constitution-class starship. Afterwards, the Enderprizians were left with medical supplies and a fulfillment of a prophecy. Hologram Janeway explained that the rules about second contact were a little fuzzy, so it was up to the Enderprizians on how they wanted to continue to evolve. (PRO: "All the World's a Stage")

In order to get to Starfleet and warn them about the living construct, the crew decided to stash the Protostar and find alternative transportation at Denaxi Depot. The crew promised to return for Hologram Janeway that they would return for her and the ship once they had it all sorted out and Hologram Janeway promised that whether it took them three days or three years, it would go by in a nanosecond for her with Hologram Janeway's systems shut down. Hologram Janeway suggested that if the crew got into a pinch, they should look up the real Kathryn Janeway, sure that she would find them as promising as Hologram Janeway did. After thanking Janeway for everything, Dal had the ship put into sleep mode, deactivating Hologram Janeway and the crew buried the ship in snow.

However, the rescue of Frex who identified the Protostar crew as the ones who had destroyed the relay station forced them to return to the ship along with Thadiun Okona. Upon being reactivated, Hologram Janeway was excited to learn about the crew's adventures, only to be told that they were over before they started and went badly. The Dauntless, under the command of Vice Admiral Janeway, chased the Protostar through warp, keeping up even at warp 9.97, Hologram Janeway was stunned at the trouble that the crew had gotten themselves into and that the real Janeway was hunting the Protostar with a quantum slipstream Dauntless-class starship. Although the Dauntless hailed them, the crew was unable to answer without the living construct infecting the other ship and, after hatching out of his cocoon in a new humanoid form, Murf accidentally fired upon the Dauntless. In response, Janeway had the Dauntless hit the Protostar's third nacelle with a photon torpedo, crippling the ship just before it could jump to proto-warp. Against Hologram Janeway's objections, the crew remodulated the shields so that they could hide from the Romulans and cross into the Romulan Neutral Zone where the Dauntless couldn't follow them. (PRO: "Crossroads")

The shot from the Dauntless put Hologram Janeway on the fritz as well as disabled the protostar drive, forcing the crew to look for a place to dock for repairs. Okona suggested stopping at Noble Isle where Hologram Janeway detected a starport near an M-class planet, thus meaning that it could have the parts that the crew needed to fix the Protostar. However, Hologram Janeway warned Dal to be careful as the planet was home to unregulated science breaking Starfleet's laws about scientific experimentation.

During the crew's time on Noble Isle, the Tal Shiar attacked, attempting to capture the ship and captain, causing Okona to flee. In response, Janeway nearly had the Dauntless destroy the Protostar, but she relented when Murf's new abilities allowed him to subdue the Romulan forces. With the parts that they had collected, the kids were able to begin repairs on the Protostar and Zero and Rok removed Dal's epigenetic dermal implant before his changes became permanent. While the crew waited on repairs to the proto-core to complete, they each shared their stories with each other. As the proto-core began to charge, the crew asked Hologram Janeway about what the real Janeway was like, and she told them about Janeway's Irish Setter Mollie. (PRO: "Preludes")

Activation of her secret programing[]

Unfortunately, her program became corrupted by the living construct in order to turn the ship into a Trojan horse when it connected to any Starfleet system. When the crew decided to abandon their search for Starfleet, a secret subroutine was triggered in her programming which caused her to lock the crew in the holodeck. Believing that the holodeck was malfunctioning, Dal gave Hologram Janeway his command code in the hopes that she'd fix it. Ultimately, they realized that the malfunction was caused by Hologram Janeway as a failsafe to ensure that they'd enter Federation space. Security logs indicated that Hologram Janeway did, unknowingly, use the command codes to gain control of the Protostar and set it on a course for the Terran system. (PRO: "Ghost in the Machine")

As the crew tried to come up with ideas on how to stop their ship, Hologram Janeway decided to deactivate herself, explaining that she couldn't sabotage them if she didn't know what they were doing. Soon after, she was reinitialized by Dal, who, in reality, was the actual Vice Admiral Janeway in Dal's body. After she proved her identity by telling Hologram Janeway something that her father once said to her, Janeway explained that her neural pattern was switched with Dal's while he was attempting to contact her telepathically. While the admiral wasn't able to disable the living construct, she was able to restore Hologram Janway's original programing which removed the Vau N'Akat corruption. This restored Hologram Janeway's memories of what had happened to the original crew of the Protostar, and she showed the admiral the logs of what had happened to Captain Chakotay. (PRO: "Mindwalk")

Stopping the Vau N'Akat[]

Though they were able to get both Dal and Admiral Janeway back into their own bodies, they were too late to stop the Protostar from automatically engaging a Starfleet armada near Gamma Serpentis. As Starfleet vessels were destroyed all around them, Dal decided that the only viable solution was to destroy the Protostar to destroy the living construct. When Jankom pointed out that the destruction of the proto-core would destroy the entire star system, Rok countered that if they detonated the core at the moment of the jump, then the blast's effect would be minimal since it would be distributed equally across space along the trajectory of the jump. However, since the self-destruct was off-line, the core needed to be detonated manually. Dal volunteered to go down with the ship, but Hologram Janeway declared that she should be the one to stay behind. Though she intended to load a copy of her program onto a isolinear chip so that the Protostar crew could take an instance of her with them, she discovered that there wasn't enough space on the chip, since her programming had grown too much.

Hologram Janeway kept this information to herself to prevent her charges from wasting time protesting when they must escape and saw the crew off when they boarded a bare-bones shuttle that Rok built from the vehicle replicator. The chip that she gave them before they launched contained a holo-recording of her saying goodbye and telling them what an honor it had been to serve with them. With the crew safely on board the shuttle, Hologram Janeway took command of the Protostar and, echoing Dal's command directive, ordered it to "go fast." As expected, the Protostar exploded as it proto-jumped. With the Protostar and living construct destroyed, the ships of the Starfleet armada were able to regain control of their systems. In addition, she intentionally created a new temporal anomaly and a message from Chakotay was thus able to pass through from 2436, confirming that he and half his crew were still alive in an alternate future.

As for her young crew, their grief at losing their mother figure and mentor was mitigated when they are taken under the wing of the actual Admiral Janeway upon reaching Starfleet Headquarters, making them warrant officers-in-training under her direct command. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 2")

The wormhole that she opened was later named the Janeway wormhole in honor of Hologram Janeway's actions. (PRO: "Into the Breach, Part II")

Aboard the Prodigy[]

Following the Attack on Mars, the new Protostar-class was scheduled for decommissioning, but Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway got it turned into training vessels in a pilot program under her command. Janeway assigned the young crew of the Protostar to the USS Prodigy where Hologram Janeway greeted them, having been assigned to continue her role as their training advisor. Hologram Janeway revealed that she had also been upgraded to the ship's Emergency Command Hologram, something that The Doctor noted was "something of rare breed" while Chakotay told the crew that they would need all of the help that they could get. Hologram Janeway directed the crew to their stations and introduced them to another upgrade from the Protostar: a second command chair for the acting first officer which Dal decided to take while letting Gwyn be the acting captain. The two Janeways agreed with Dal's decision and offered Gwyn their encouragement. (PRO: "Ouroboros, Part II")
