Lieutenant junior grade Barniss Frex was a male Denobulan Starfleet sciences division officer who served as the sole crewmember aboard subspace relay station CR-721 in 2384.
That year, CR-721 was visited by the USS Protostar, whose crew were seeking asylum. Though nonplussed by the situation, Frex welcomed them to the Federation and initiated entry procedures by giving them biometric scans. However, when he downloaded the Protostar's logs, a Vau N'Akat weapon hidden aboard corrupted the station computer and caused it to turn its phasers on itself. With his station disintegrating around him, and believing it to be a deliberate attack by the Protostar crew, Frex panicked and fled in the only escape pod. (PRO: "Asylum")
Frex's escape pod landed on a snow-covered world. He was then picked up by an Orion starship and taken to Denaxi. (PRO: "All the World's a Stage") At Denaxi Depot, Frex loudly regaled the other visitors with an account of his ordeal until he was found by an away team from the USS Dauntless. Frex told Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway that his station had been destroyed by six "ruthless savages" dressed as Starfleet, but neglected to mention that they were children. (PRO: "Crossroads")
