Decommissioning

Decommissioning was the act of taking a ship, device, or computer program out of service. A starship that was decommissioned could be said to be put in mothballs. Decommissioned vessels were often stored at surplus depots.

Starships[]

Starfleet decommissioned its Daedalus-class starships in 2196. (TNG: "Power Play")

In 2285, the USS Enterprise was due to be decommissioned due to age and battle damage, although the vessel was ultimately hijacked by Admiral James T. Kirk. Kirk later self-destructed the vessel over Genesis to kill a Klingon boarding party. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Following the Khitomer Conference in 2293, which formalized peaceful relations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, Starfleet ordered the USS Enterprise-A to return to Spacedock One for decommissioning. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

The starship T'Pau was decommissioned in 2364 and was later sent to Surplus Depot Z15 at Qualor II, where it was registered on stardate 41334.2 and stationed at Section-18-Gamma-12. At that time, it was stripped of materials, armaments and sensors, its navigational deflector array being routed to the holding vessel USS Tripoli. During this, a file was created for this ship and stored in the Qualor II Depot Z15 Inventory Database. By 2368, other decommissioned starships at Z15 included the USS Alka-Celsior, B-24-CLN, two Miranda-class starships, and a K't'inga-class cruiser. (TNG: "Unification I", "Unification II")

In 2381, the California-class was set to be decommissioned in favor of the Texas-class automated starship following the disastrous showing of Project Swing By and the Exposé Starfleet's Shame. However, this was rescinded following the destruction of all three Texas-class ships and the death of their creator and sponsor, Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo. (LD: "The Stars At Night")

Following the return of the USS Voyager in 2378, the ship was decommissioned and taken to a facility in the Portelo system to be converted into a museum ship. (LD: "Twovix") It was later stored in the Fleet Museum over Athan Prime along with a number of other decommissioned and preserved ships. (PRO: "The Bounty")

In 2385, following the Attack on Mars and Starfleet's new isolationist policy, Starfleet was going to decommission the new Protostar-class as it was determined that its unique protostar drive was only useful for exploration. However, Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway intervened and got the new USS Prodigy turned into a training ship in a pilot program under her command instead. (PRO: "Ouroboros, Part II")

In 2401, the USS Enterprise-F was scheduled for early decommissioning which occurred following the destruction of the Borg. (PIC: "The Next Generation", "The Last Generation")

A number of decommissioned starships were kept on display in the Fleet Museum by 2401 including the Enterprise NX-01, the Enterprise-A, the USS Excelsior, USS Defiant and Voyager. (PIC: "The Bounty")

In 2402, having been pressed back into service to fight the Borg, the rebuilt USS Enterprise-D was decommissioned and returned to the Fleet Museum shortly before the launch of the USS Enterprise-G. (PIC: "The Last Generation")

In an alternate future around 2390, the USS Enterprise-D would have been decommissioned had it not been chosen as a command by Admiral William T. Riker. (TNG: "All Good Things...")

The lateral vector transporter was considered obsolete by both Starfleet and the Vulcans by 2249 and had been largely phased out by that year. Some ships, such as the USS Shenzhou and USS Hiawatha, continued to use them regardless. (DIS: "Battle at the Binary Stars", "Brother")

Prior to 2377, Lewis Zimmerman tried to have EMH Mark Is decommissioned, but much to his dismay, Starfleet reassigned them to waste transfer barges instead. (VOY: "Life Line")
