The USS Hiawatha (NCC-815) was a 23rd century Hiawatha-type medical frigate, operated by Starfleet Medical as indicated by its red emblem on the dorsal primary hull section in front of its bridge.

History[]

It was still equipped with lateral vector transporters in 2256, considered obsolete by the late-2240s.

Lateral vector transporters were described as such aboard the USS Shenzhou in DIS: "Battle at the Binary Stars".

In 2256, during the Federation-Klingon War, the Hiawatha was believed to have been destroyed by the Klingons en route to Starbase 36. In fact, it had crash landed on the surface of an interstellar asteroid as a result of encountering wildly fluctuating gravity waves. Most of the crew and patients were able to evacuate in escape pods, though a few were too injured to be moved. Engineer Jett Reno volunteered to stay behind to care for them. (DIS: "Brother")

The USS Hiawatha found

With internal sensors down, Reno was able to modify tricorders to track down damaged EPS relays and conduits. (DIS: "Far From Home")

Ten months and eleven days after the crash, the wreckage of the ship was by accident located by the crew of the USS Discovery, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, while investigating the origin of a mysterious red burst. A Discovery away team rescued Reno and her remaining patients before the asteroid and what was left of the Hiawatha collided with a pulsar. (DIS: "Brother")

During the Battle near Xahea, Commander Michael Burnham used the Red Angel suit to travel back in time to the Hiawatha and cause the first of the red bursts. (DIS: "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2")

After being kidnapped by Cleveland Booker and Ruon Tarka in 3190, Reno told them about her experiences aboard the Hiawatha while trying to convince them to stop their plan. (DIS: "Species Ten-C")

Background information[]

This ship was named for the Native American co-founder of the Iroquois Confederacy, Hiawatha.

Similar to Discovery material being labeled "Disco", some material aboard the Hiawatha was labeled "Hia".

The Hiawatha was 599.5 meters long, as was established in October 2019 by the ship's designer, Ryan Dening. [1]
