"When I ain't usin' this classic confection as monkey-lizard bait, it does a fine job lurin' less destructive diners."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[1]

Kowakian crumb cake was a cake created by the chef Strono Tuggs. The cake was made with a berry swirl and spices. Tuggs eventually discovered that Kowakian monkey-lizards were drawn to the cake. By 34 ABY, he used the cake to stop a monkey-lizard from rampaging around Takodana Castle. Tuggs sold Kowakian crumb cake at his restaurant, Tuggs' Grub, in Black Spire Outpost on Batuu and included a recipe for it in his The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Description[]

Kowakian crumb cake was a cake that had a berry swirl, a blend of spices, and was cut into square slices. It had a pink crumb topping and white icing on its top, and it was served for dessert. It was created by the chef Strono Tuggs, who discovered that Kowakian monkey-lizards were drawn to the cake.[1]

History[]

"Luckily, during one particular devastatin' rampage, I discovered that Kowakians are drawn to the blend of spices in my crumb cake. Or maybe it was the berry swirl. I dunno."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[1]

By 34 ABY,[2] Strono Tuggs used Kowakian crumb cake to prevent a Kowakian monkey-lizard from rampaging around Maz Kanata's castle on Takodana, where he worked at the time. After the creature attempted to eat an entire cake, the chef was able to trap it under a soup pot.[1]

Tuggs included the story, as well as a recipe for the cake, in The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, a cookbook he authored[1] in 34 ABY.[3] In the book, Tuggs also wrote that, in addition to serving as bait for Kowakian monkey-lizards, a benefit he had taken advantage of on multiple occasions, the cake did a satisfactory job of luring customers to Tuggs' Grub, his restaurant in Black Spire Outpost on Batuu,[1] a planet in the Outer Rim Territories.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

Sic-Six-layer cake

The illustration of the Kowakian crumb cake from Star Wars Legends was later repurposed to depict the canon Sic-Six-layer cake.

Kowakian crumb cake was introduced to the new Star Wars canon in the 2019 recipe book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Marc Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. The out-of-universe recipe for the cake includes the ingredients cinnamon, ginger, sugar, brown sugar, butter, food coloring, flour, an egg, vanilla extract, buttermilk, baking soda, salt, a dash of orange extract, heavy cream, and blueberries.[1]

Kowakian crumb cake originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity.[5] A cake seen in the 2002 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[6] was later identified as Kowakian crumb cake in "Dining at Dex's," a 2009 StarWars.com Hyperspace article written by Gregory Walker.[5]

However, the canon Kowakian crumb cake bears several differences from its portrayal in Star Wars Legends: While the cake is cylindrical with a light-brown cribblycrunch topping in Legends,[5] the canon cake is cut into square slices and has a pink crumb topping.[1] Nonetheless, both versions of the cake feature white icing on their tops.[1][5] In the new Star Wars canon, the cake seen in Attack of the Clones was identified as Sic-Six-layer cake in the 2015 book What is a Wookiee?.[7]
