This article is about the non-branded original Moogan Tea.
You may be looking for Ardees Beverage, the trademarked tea from Mooga or the Day Star Hotel's Moogan iced tea.

"But if you wanna get a taste of real Moogan Tea, the kind we used to drink back before big business dipped its filthy fingers into the concentrate, just ask any respectable barkeep. But try to keep it quiet. As long as there aren't any corporate surveillance droids around, they'll be glad to brew you up a nice frothy mug the way it was originally intended."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[1]

Moogan Tea was a beverage that was popular throughout the Outer Rim. It was brewed daily at drinking establishments using a spiced syrup or tea concentrate. The drink was sweet, spicy, and frothy.

When the Commerce Guild took control of its planet of origin, Mooga, they trademarked the recipe and gave it the name Ardees Beverage. Various businesses defied the legal claim that Moogan Tea was a proprietary recipe and continued to brew and serve it, albeit more discreetly.

During the Clone Wars, a cantina in Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, later known as Oga's Cantina, offered alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of the tea. They were still serving the non-alcoholic version in 34 ABY when the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs published his recipes for Moogan Spice Syrup and the drink made from it in his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook.

Moogan Tea was sold on Tatooine.

The original Moogan Tea was a beverage that originated on the planet Mooga, but its recipe was widely known across the Outer Rim. It was brewed using a spiced syrup or tea concentrate; the resulting beverage was beige-colored, frothy, and served cold.[1]

Many drinking establishments prepared fresh batches of the sweet and spicy tea every day,[1] sometimes with added alcohol.[4] Some merchants on[3] the desert planet[1] Tatooine sold small tea bags at their market stalls.[3]

History[]

"We've got Batuu Brew, Black Spire Brew, Blurrgfire, Toniray White, Andoan White, Moogan Tea—with or without alco—"
―Janott lists the alcohol available at a cantina in Black Spire Outpost[4]

In 232 BBY,[5] while on the snowy planet Andraven, the pilot Nash Durango eagerly anticipated drinking the tea, which he had been told would be available. Indeed, later that day, he drank a cup of it.[6]

Ogas-MooganTea

Oga's Cantina on Batuu served authentic Moogan Tea.

By the time of the Clone Wars,[7] the Commerce Guild had taken control of Mooga and declared that Moogan Tea was their trademarked beverage with a proprietary recipe. The Commerce Guild created the Ardees Beverage Company to manufacture the bottled beverage with the brand name Ardees Beverage. The guild utilized corporate surveillance droids to identify establishments that attempted to sell their own homebrewed Moogan Tea. Despite the threat of being issued cease and desist transmissions, many businesses defiantly but discreetly continued to serve their brews.[1]

While the human Senator Padmé Amidala was on the Outer Rim planet Batuu for a personal mission later during the Clone Wars, she visited a cantina in Black Spire Outpost. She was offered alcoholic and non-alcoholic Moogan Tea by the bartender, Janott.[4] By 34 ABY,[8] that location had been named Oga's Cantina after its owner, Oga Garra, and it continued to serve the beverage during breakfast hours.[2] In his Traveler's Guide to Batuu, author Eloc Throno described the Moogan Tea served at Oga's Cantina as "well-garnished."[9]

The Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs claimed that any respectable barkeep would know how to make real Moogan Tea from the original recipe, and he believed it was likely worth risking legal ramifications to have a taste.[1] In 34 ABY,[10] he took a risk himself with his cookbook The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook; it included his recipes for Moogan Tea made with his personal blend of Moogan Spice Syrup and a Christophsian sugar topping.[1]

The bottled tea from Mooga known as Ardees Beverage

The manufactured Ardees Beverage version of Moogan Tea was introduced in "Corruption," the fifth episode of the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars,[7] when it first aired on October 8, 2010. The StarWars.com episode guide included concept art with the asset name "Mooga tea bottle and logo."[11]

The Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge multimedia project introduced a new version of Moogan Tea[12] that was first mentioned in the second installment of the Star Wars: Thrawn novel series, Thrawn: Alliances, which was written by Timothy Zahn[4] and published on July 24, 2018.[13] In the reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious, which was written by Pablo Hidalgo[14] and published on October 23 of that year,[15] a section describing the events of "Corruption" referred to Ardees Beverage as Moogan tea.[14]

Moogan Spice Syrup, an ingredient required to make Moogan Tea out-of-universe

Moogan Tea appeared at the out-of-universe Oga's Cantina bar in the themed land Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. It was announced to the public on February 27, 2019,[12] and it debuted for guests to purchase when the land opened in Disneyland Park on May 31 and Disney's Hollywood Studios on August 29 of that year.[16] The menu's description reads, "Gold Peak® Unsweetened Tea, Chocolate Milk, Vanilla, and Cinnamon, topped with Vanilla Whipped Cream, Cinnamon & Sugar-dusted Cereal."[17]

A recipe for Moogan Tea is included in the cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which was written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak[1] and published on November 5, 2019.[18] The book clarified that Moogan Tea and Ardees Beverage are different drinks. The recipe uses the ingredients unsweetened iced tea, chocolate milk, Moogan Spice Syrup, heavy cream, falernum, and a sprinkling of Christophsian sugar mixed with ground cinnamon. Recipes for Moogan Spice Syrup and Christophsian sugar are also included in the book.[1]

Discrepancies and The Sims 4[]

When Moogan Tea and Black Spire Brew were first pictured on StarWars.com, they were erroneously identified with their names swapped.[12] The non-canon video game expansion The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu for The Sims 4 that was released in 2020 also mistakenly depicts Moogan Tea and Black Spire Brew with their names switched with each other.[19]

Journey to Batuu also includes Moogan Tea as a drink that can be purchased by the player's Sims at the Oga's Cantina vendor in the Black Spire Outpost neighborhood. Upon consuming the drink for the first time, the Sim automatically learns the recipe and can prepare it at mixology bars in their home neighborhood.[19]
