"There's just somethin' special about the smell of a pipin'hot batch of sweet-sand cookies, straight outta the oven and waitin' to be devoured."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[2]

Sweet-sand cookies were a confectionery popular with children. During his childhood, the young Zare Leonis had a habit of stealing sweet-sand cookies. When he was applying to join the Academy for Young Imperials on Lothal, his older sister Dhara Leonis teased him about his childhood mischiefs. Strono Tuggs had a recipe for sweet-sand cookies that he got from R0-GR when the droid and his family visited Takodana Castle.

Description[]

"Every species has its own spin on the classic."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[2]

Sweet-sand cookies were a type of oven-baked cookie that could be prepared using a number of different recipes. The recipe used by the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs produced light-brown cookies that varied in diameter and had a sliced ingredient and white and brown powder, including Christophsian sugar, as toppings.[2] The reprogrammed battle droid R0-GR produced cookies that were a darker shade of brown and had black-colored chips spread throughout.[3]

History[]

"Believe it or not, I got my current recipe from a reprogrammed battle droid by the name of Roger who paid a visit to Maz's castle with his human family. (It's a long story). But no matter the recipe, the result is the same: When I put out a tray of 'em, even the most hardened criminals can't help but smile."
―Strono Tuggs, The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook[2]

The reprogrammed battle droid R0-GR baked sweet-sand cookies.

By the time he was fourteen years old[1] between 6 BBY and 5 BBY,[4] the Human Zare Leonis had a history of stealing sweet-sand cookies that sister Dhara Leonis teased him about while helping him filled out an application to join the Academy for Young Imperials on the planet Lothal.[1]

While visiting Takodana Castle on the planet Takodana with the Freemaker family, R0-GR provided a recipe for sweet-sand cookies to Tuggs, who worked for Maz Kanata, owner of the castle, as the castle cook up until the building was destroyed[2] in 34 ABY.[5] Later that year,[6] Tuggs wrote a cookbook entitled The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and included the recipe for cookies that R0-GR had provided. In the book he claimed that there was something special about the smell of a batch of piping-hot cookies, and, despite the fact that every species had a different version of the classic dish, a tray would bring smiles to the faces of even the most hardened criminals no matter the recipe.[2] R0-GR also wrote book titled Droidography while serving in the Resistance and included an image of himself holding a tray of sweet-sand cookies on the final page.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Origins and recipe[]

In the new Star Wars canon, sweet-sand cookies were first mentioned in Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, a 2014 junior novel written by Jason Fry.[1] They were then depicted for the first time in the non-canonical "A Hero Discovered," the first episode of the LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures television show[7] which aired on June 20, 2016.[8] The cookies' first canon depict was then in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Droidography, which was written by Marc Sumerak.[3] The cookies originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in Platt's Starport Guide, a 1995 supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game written by Peter M. Schweighofer.[9]

In the 2019 cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, written by Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, an out-of-universe recipe for sweet-sand cookies is given that requires butter, granulated sugar, almond meal, ground vanilla, flour, sliced almonds, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, heavy cream, and Christophsian sugar, another recipe included in the book.[2]

Galaxy's Edge appearance[]

A variety of sweet-sand cookie, known as the Chocolate Chip Sweet-Sand Cookie, was available for purchase in the real world at the Milk Stand in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in Anaheim, California for the park's 2022 Black Spire Day festivities, which coincided with Star Wars Day celebrations, and was available for a limited time.[10] The menu at the Milk Stand described the cookie as a "Chocolate Chip and Toffee Cookie topped with Pistachios and Sea Salt."[11]

LEGO appearances[]

"What? I'm baking sweet-sand cookies."
―R0-GR[7]

In "A Hero Discovered", set after the Battle of Yavin but before the construction of the second Death Star, R0-GR is baking a tray of sweet-sand cookies in Freemaker Salvage and Repair on the Wheel space station when he is called to the garage's main hangar by the Human Freemaker siblings. Complaining that he was in the middle of baking, R0-GR emerges with the tray and is asked what the worst battle he participated in during the Clone Wars was. After the droid responds that it was the Battle of Nal Kapok, Zander Freemaker grabs the droid and pulls him onto a lift so that they can leave to scavenge parts from the battle site, causing R0-GR to drop his tray and scatter the contents across the floor. Zander then tells the upset R0-GR that the cookies were likely delicious, but that they need to leave immediately.[7]

In "A New Home," the first episode of The Freemaker Adventures's second season, the Freemakers join the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and as their ship, StarScavenger, approaches the Alliance Feet's flagship, Home One, each lists what benefits of their new allegiance they are excited about, with R0-GR revealing a tray of burned sweet-sand cookies and admitting he is glad someone else will be cooking. When later introducing himself to the droids of the Alliance he lists sweet-sand cookies as one of his primary interests alongside writing his autobiography and making friends.[12]

Further LEGO appearances[]

After the Freemakers successfully repair all of the starfighters aboard Home One, R0-GR cooks a tray of sweet-sand cookies using the flame from the engine of a BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bomber to celebrate; however, the flame burns the cookies and generates enough smoke to blind R0-GR. Unsure if the cookies are burnt or not as he cannot see them through the smoke, R0-GR attempts to deliver the tray to the Freemakers but stumbles into a stack of crates and causes it to collapse, damaging all of the starfighters again.[12]

In "A Perilous Rescue," R0-GR successfully cooks a celebratory tray of sweet-sand cookies to present to the Freemakers and their allies after they return to the Home One after a successful skirmish against the Empire on the planet Kashyyyk. Rowan Freemaker is pleased to see R0-GR did not burn the cookies and eats one.[13]

In the LEGO Star Wars: All-Stars episode "Scouting for Leia/A Mission with Maz," set shortly before the Hosnian Cataclysm[14] in 34 ABY,[5] R0-GR reveals that his autobiography, From Trenches to Wrenches: The Roger Story, now contains updated sweet-sand cookie recipes, impressing the Drabatan Resistance member Ka-Pao. When the crime lord Graballa the Hutt later attempted to kidnap R0-GR, the droid and his ally Moxie Freemaker concluded it was unlikely that the Hutt wanted R0-GR for his cooking skills, as he usually burned sweet-sand cookies.[14]
