Kagaliカガリ, kagari also known as "Curse Lord" Kazalimカザリーム, kazarīmu, is a former Demon Lord and president of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance. Believed to have been killed by Leon Cromwell 200 years ago, Kagali survived as an Astral body and now resides in a Homunculus. She once served as Yuuki Kagurazaka's secretary and continued to exert influence through her subordinates. Seeking power, she joined the Eastern Empire military but fell under Lieutenant Tatsuya Kondou's control during a coup attempt against Emperor Rudra. Released from his domination upon his death, Kagali joined Michael's army while harboring traitorous intentions. She later allied with the Octagram and currently cooperates with them against Michael's forces.

Appearance[]

As Kazalim, he was a scarred male elf usually covered in a cloak and wearing a mask. As Kagali, she was a beautiful female elf with violet eyes and blonde hair, usually wearing formal attire.

Personality[]

During her time as one of the Demon Lords, Kagali was infamously known to be a cruel and power-hungry individual. She garnered a lot of infamy due to her utilizing unique curses to create several high-class servants in order to further consolidate power. She was also known to be highly destructive and ill-tempered once set off, having antagonized Roy Valentin and causing mass destruction in the ensuing battle against him.

Kagali was also known to be a highly cunning and intelligent Demon Lord, having initially gained a reputation from her uncanny ability to gather information and create complex and ingenious schemes. She was known to control things behind the scenes rather than reveal her hand. This is seen during numerous schemes to recruit several Demon Lord potentials as allies by advocating their claims to join the Demon Lord council in order to obtain further political power amongst her peers.

However, despite her violent and manipulative tendencies, Kagali was also shown to have a lighter and more friendly side, seen during her interactions with the members of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, who are all genuinely loyal to each other and view themselves as family.

Kagali is also shown to possess a very vengeful side to her personality, as seen where she was greatly angered by Clayman's death and swore to avenge him, and she still felt immense anger and vengeful hatred for Leon Cromwell due to him having defeated and killing her original body.

It should however be noted that Kagali's ill-tempered personality is also one of her greatest flaws, as unlike her usually composed manner where she would make logical and more tactical decisions, she would usually end up lashing out at her opponents when set off without analyzing the situation and this has costed her dearly on two occasions; the first one being due to her jealousy that erupted from seeing Leon's beauty and thus losing her physical body and the second occasion being enraged upon learning of Clayman being forcefully brainwashed and resulting in his demise, that would in turn lead her to be put under Kondou's brainwashing.

Her power-hungry attitude may have resulted due to the physical and mental abuse she received from Jahil (who possessed her father), as she would have likely lamented over her powerlessness and in turn may have desired more power in order to retaliate later on as well as to ensure she remains strong enough to defend herself.

Background[]

Centuries ago, Kagali was once the princess of the Super-Sorcery Kingdom of the Elves, which, at the time, was one of the most prosperous kingdoms in the world. Kagali suffered a great deal of misfortune due to her father, the King (who had been possessed by Jahil) who stripped her of her powers and experimented on her, leading to her death. She was resurrected by him as a Deathman, albeit with a rotting, twisted and an ugly form due to a curse he placed. Kagali begged him to return to his "peaceful and loving ways" but her plea fell on deaf ears as, in a fit of rage, he lashed out and used the power of his curse to forcibly transform her into a man and changed her name to Kazalim, calling her his son. Ashamed of her once beautiful face gone forever, she began to wear a mask and robes to hide her scarred body, and started referring to her new name, Kazalim. Eventually, her homeland would soon spell its own destruction by foolish acts of its king, who angered Milim Nava, the daughter of Star King Dragon Veldanava, resulting in the nation being completely obliterated as the capital of the elven empire was reduced to nothing by a bright beam of pure destruction.

Kagali was one of the few remaining elves who survived the disaster. Witnessing Milim's wrath firsthand caused the latter to adopt a healthy fear and respect for her power.

Devastated by the loss of the maidservants and the knights who loved her and desperate to see them again, Kagali used the forbidden spell "Birthday". The result was the creation of three beautiful Deathmen: Clayman, Footman and Tear. Upon seeing they didn't appear ugly, Kagali realized that her appearance was the result of a curse that her father had placed on her. These individuals were specifically engineered in order to give them unique traits, where Clayman was engineered to specifically become a Demon Lord while Footman and Tear had formidable combat prowess to make them a match against a Demon Lord. In order to never forget the humiliation of the past, she fell prey to the forbidden art.

As one of the surviving elven royalty, Kagali attempted to rebuild her lost homeland. At some point after establishing a settlement for her fellow elves, the Chaos Dragon attacked and contaminated the land, causing the elves to be cursed to live their lives as dark elves. By using the knowledge and technology she preserved from the original fallen elven nation, now known as the great ruin "Soma," she managed to expand on and recreate many of its lost technologies, resulting in the creation of the capital city, Amrita, of the Puppet Nation of Jistav. She later travelled back to the ruins of her former country to retrieve its treasures. On her journey, she encountered Sarion Grimwald, the Chosen hero who had been tasked with eliminating the Chaos Dragon, but was mortally wounded and affected by its cursed attacks. Kagali, who had been observing his battle, offered him the choice of being reborn, but warned him that he would not only become her puppet but would also lose his memories. Sarion agreed, firmly believing he would never forget his memories and his wife Sylvia. With the negotiations concluded, Kagali used the spell, but due to her inexperience, Sarion was reborn as a Deathman but lost all his memories. From there he was given a new name and identity; Laplace, the Wonder Pierrot.

Overcoming persecution during the war between the demi-humans and humans, Kagali emerged as the "Curse Lord" Kazalim. She quickly built up a fearsome reputation as a cunning schemer due to her uncanny ability to gather information.

Kagali lived through three Great Tenma Wars. She joined the Demon Lord council as the seventh member. During her time as one of the Demon Lords, Kagali was known to have battled against Roy Valentin, who was noted to have power equivalent to her own. Their battle was destructive enough that all the surrounding territories around them were destroyed, resulting in the passing of a certain custom — which has seen use into the present — whereby all disputes between Demon Lords are decided via a majority vote. However, despite having fought him, it was shown that Kagali was oblivious to Demon Lord Valentin's true position as a servant to the actual Demon Lord Luminous Valentine, holding his council seat.

Kagali, alongside Milim, would also advocate the claim of Carrion as a Demon Lord and would also back up Frey and Clayman's claims in order to allow them into the council in order to obtain further political pull amongst fellow Demon Lords.

Eventually, Kagali would come across or hear about Leon Cromwell, who had declared himself a Demon Lord. As no one stepped up to support Leon's claim, he was deemed a self-proclaimed Demon Lord, causing Kagali to step in to eliminate Leon for daring to call himself a Demon Lord, leading to the two fighting each other. In actuality, however, Kagali wanted to gain more power and decided to recruit Leon, as she did with Carrion and Frey, hoping to teach Leon a lesson in humility. However, upon reaching Leon's territory and seeing his beautiful face, Kagali was enraged and jealous, reminded of her lost beauty, and attacked him.

Kagali lost the fight and her body was destroyed. However, she had successfully survived their encounter and for over a hundred years, wandered around as a disembodied spirit, with her consciousness and mind slowly dissipating due to lack of a body. It was only until 10 years prior to Rimuru's reincarnation that she successfully possessed and shared the body with an Otherworlder, Yuuki Kagurazaka, and from there she acquired the current female elf homunculus body. Grateful for Yuuki's help, despite originally having tried to snatch his body, she began working closely together with him to reach their shared goals, and took on the identity of Kagali, Yuuki's secretary.

Trivia[]

  • It's been stated by Yuuki Kagurazaka that her homunculus body was one of the Sorcerous Dynasty of Sarion's specially made products.
  • Her original body was a female, being the Princess of the Super-Sorcery Kingdom of the elves, but was disfigured and forcibly transformed into a male body. After the death of her original body, she possessed the female Homunculus body. As such, it can be said that she had to change her gender twice throughout her lifetime.
  • In Volume 8, she decides to call herself Kagali temporarily, telling Yuuki that she will call herself Kazalim only after taking vengeance on Leon. As of Volume 19, she no longer calls herself Kazalim and prefers being called by her current name, Kagali.
  • She debuts in Volume 2 of the Light Novel, though only mentioned by her title as the "Curse Lord." Her actual debut is in Volume 6, though there is no mention of her current identity as Kagali and she is only called Kazalim. Her debut as Kagali, however, is in Volume 9.
  • Her current Mystic angel body is stated to surpass her former body of Demon Lord Kazalim in her prime.
  • As Demon Lord Kazalim, she held the second most political power and influence in the Demon Lord Council due to her bringing Clayman, Carrion and Frey into the Council, only falling behind Guy, since he was the strongest amongst the Demon Lords and the de facto leader of the Demon Lord council.
  • She likes cream puffs from Englassia and it is assumed to be her favorite food. One possible reason may be because she might not have tasted various cuisines from all over the world. Another reason could be because it could have been the first food she had ever since she lost and regained a physical body.
  • It should be noted that Kagali was only pretending to be annoyed by her new female Homunculus body, and even went as far as to behave like her former personality of Kazalim just to hide the fact that she was originally a female. This is likely done out of embarrassment as most knew the Demon Lord Kazalim to be a man. In actuality, she was pleased, as she not only got a body, but even had that body to be made as close as her original female body was.
  • Kagali seems to have been originally imagined as an elf-turned-deathman; in her debut in the prologue of volume 6, it is specifically noted that she was originaly an elf before being transformed into a deathman. It seems that only much later, in volume 18, her original species was retconned into a high elf. This has produced some confusion among fans, as high elves are spiritual life-forms, and Kagali was previously noted in both volume 6 and volume 14 to not be a spiritual life-form.
  • As Demon Lord Kazalim, she has taken part in only two mentioned battles; one battle with Roy Valentin that seemingly ended in a draw, and the other battle with Leon Cromwell which was a devastating setback due to losing her physical body at the time.
