"One time a rathtar broke out of the Lonisa City Zoo and I used the Force to calm it down while we healed its injuries. I brought it back to the temple, but Master Eicho didn't let me keep it."
"Yeah, he passed out. Then the rathtar tried to eat him. It was hilarious."
"I would never have let Bubbles eat him!"
"Master Eicho didn't know that. The rathtar was six meters tall and could barely fit through the temple door."
―Tep Tep and Kildo, to Ram Jomaram[2]

Eicho was a Valon Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order, serving in the Outer Rim planet Valo's Jedi temple by training the Jedi younglings Tep Tep, Kildo, and Gavi. After Eicho refused to allow Tep Tep to keep a rathtar named Bubbles in the temple, Kildo placed a jar of spotted spiders in his bag in retaliation. The Jedi Master died on Valo during a Nihil marauder attack in 230 BBY, and the younglings later recounted the rathtar and spotted spider incidents to Padawan Ram Jomaram the following year.

Biography[]

"Anyway, he canceled our boring meditation sessions for two weeks while he recovered from the shock. What a shame."
"Kildo will do anything to get out of tasks. Like the time he put a jar of giant spotted spiders in Master Eicho's bag right after he came back from the rathtar incident."
―Kildo and Gavi, to Ram Jomaram, about Eicho[2]
TepTep HRConcept

Tep Tep unsuccessfully tried to convince Eicho to allow her to keep a rathtar in the Valo Temple.

Eicho was a Valon Jedi Master of the Jedi Order who lived during the High Republic Era and operated out of the Jedi temple on the Outer Rim planet Valo. He trained Jedi younglings Tep Tep, Kildo, and Gavi in meditation, which the children found boring. One time, Tep Tep brought a rathtar named Bubbles—who had broken out of the Lonisa City Zoo—into the temple to heal its injuries. Eicho passed out upon seeing the creature, and Bubbles attempted to eat him.[2]

Ultimately, Eicho did not allow Tep Tep to keep the creature and spoke harshly to her about bringing it in. Afterward, the Jedi Master canceled his meditation sessions with the younglings for two weeks while recovering from the incident's shock and left the Valo temple. Upon his return, Kildo snuck a jar of spotted spiders into Eicho's bag as retaliation for the Master reprimanding Tep Tep. Eicho was shocked and departed the temple again shortly after his arrival until he had recovered from the incident. Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station[2] in 230 BBY,[3] Valo's Jedi Masters prepared to leave and head to the Jedi Temple on[2] the Core Worlds planet[3] Coruscant. However, their efforts were stalled when Valo was attacked by the Nihil marauders not long after[2] in the same year.[1]

All of the Valo Jedi temple's Masters[2]—including Eicho[4]—hurriedly attempted to flee into the world's mountains to escape Lonisa City. However, the Nihil caught the Jedi and killed all of them despite their attempts to fight back, with several being fed to a Force-eating Nameless creature—leaving only Gavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep as the survivors. After surviving for a year on their own in the wilderness, Tep Tep, Kildo, and Gavi returned to the temple and met with Padawan Ram Jomaram, one of the only other Jedi on the world, and told him about the deaths of Valo's Jedi Masters. While introducing themselves, the younglings recounted the stories of the rathtar and spotted spider incidents to Jomaram, as well as Eicho's reactions to both. While Tep Tep insisted she would have never let the rathtar eat Eicho, Kildo claimed that Gavi could not prove he was responsible for placing the spiders in the Master's bag.[2]

Personality and traits[]

"Master Eicho had to leave again to get over it."
"He shouldn't have been rude to Tep Tep. And for the record, you can't prove anything."
―Gavi and Kildo, to Ram Jomaram, about Eicho departing the temple following an incident with spotted spiders[2]

While training younglings on Valo, Eicho became frightened when Tep Tep brought a rathtar to the temple and passed out. The incident flustered him, resulting in him departing the temple for two weeks and canceling scheduled meditation sessions, much to the delight of the three younglings he was teaching. While reflecting on the incident, Kildo did not regret placing spiders in the Jedi Master's bag, having considered the way he had spoken to Tep Tep in the past rude. Eicho attempted to help evacuate the younglings from the Nihil during a Nihil attack, fighting against the occupiers to give his students more time to escape.[2]

Powers and abilities[]

As a member of the Jedi Order, the Jedi Master was a Force-sensitive individual trained to wield the Force.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Eicho was mentioned in Escape from Valo, a 2024 junior novel written by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase III.[5] On Twitter, Older confirmed that all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters—including Eicho—perished in the Nihil attack.[4]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The events of The High Republic: Escape from Valo take place one year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which equates to 229 BBY per Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. The novel establishes that the attack on Valo—in which all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters, save for Kunpar Vasivola, died on Valo—took place one year before, meaning Eicho must have passed away in 230 BBY.

The younglings in the novel and Driggit see many of them perish in the attack on Valo — is it safe to say all of them passed away save for Kunpar, or were there ones that survived and the younglings only assumed they all got dusted?")
