Gavi was a human male Jedi Initiate trapped on the planet Valo behind the Nihil Stormwall. After witnessing the death of one of his masters by the Nameless, Gavi lost his ability to use the Force. He had romantic feelings for his fellow youngling, the Alcedian boy Kildo. Gavi was stabbed by his best friend Driggit Parse, with a Vibroblade to the chest while Niv Drendow Apruk watched. Gavi was subsequently rescued by his friends moments later who were in possession of bacta. Gavi wielded a blue-bladed lightsaber.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"Gavi is a character I love deeply because he's a fiery, extremely stressed-out little dude who's trying to keep it together for the other Jedi younglings (like Tep Tep!) while dealing with a crush the size of Coruscant. Also, I love a short king"
―Alyssa Wong[4]

Gavi was first pictured during a Lucasfilm San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 21, 2023.[5] He was first identified by name in Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia, a reference book written by Megan Crouse and Amy Richau[3] that was first released on November 9 of the same year.[6] Gavi first appeared in Escape from Valo, a 2024 junior novel written by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong and illustrated by Petur Antonsson as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase III. Concept artwork of Gavi was rendered by Antonsson.[7]

Wong featured Gavi in their "Escape from Valo" countdown on series on Twitter and described some of his personality traits. The author indicated that the young Jedi struggled with losing his connection to the Force while also dealing with a massive crush on another[4] male youngling—Kildo[8]— pairing their post with a meme about an individual saying they were dealing with bisexual stress.[4] Wong also stated that Gavi was created with buck teeth because they thought they were a cute feature.[9]
