"We were invaded. I held them at bay as long as I could, but— there were too many. The battle was horrific. Still, we weren't beaten. Not yet. Not until the Jedi Council gave the order to abandon Tanalorr and then refused to counterattack."
―Dagan Gera[1]

The attack on Tanalorr, also known as the invasion of Tanalorr, was a surprise attack by the Nihil marauders on the planet Tanalorr during the High Republic Era. The attack came as a check was being carried out to decide whether Tanalorr might be suitable to host a strong Jedi presence. Despite a spirited defense by the Jedi—led by renowned Jedi Knight Dagan Gera and Jedi Council member Oppo Rancisis—the Nihil overwhelmed the Jedi's defenses.[1]

The battle was a victory for the Nihil over the Jedi, as the force with which the marauders attacked and the difficulty of reaching the planet made the Jedi Council decide to abandon Tanalorr altogether, which angered Gera deeply and directly led to his betrayal of the Order. How the Nihil discovered Tanalorr, however, remained a mystery to the Jedi. Under the belief that the Nihil must have obtained one of the Abyss compasses—the only devices capable of navigating the deadly Koboh Abyss to reach Tanalorr—the Jedi Council ordered the destruction of all compasses following the abandonment of Tanalorr.[1]

  2. The attack on Tanalorr takes place after the Great Hyperspace Disaster, which StarWars SWCE 2023: 10 Reveals from the Lucasfilm Publishing Panel on StarWars.com (backup link) establishes was the first conflict between the Jedi Order and the Nihil, and before the end of the Emergences, which Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes ended before the dedication of the Starlight Beacon. As Star Wars: Timelines dates both the Great Hyperspace Disaster and the dedication of the Starlight Beacon to 232 BBY, the attack on Tanalorr must take place within that year.
