Viras (バイラス,   Bairasu?) is a kaiju from the Rebirth continuity. It made its debut in the fifth episode of the 2023 Netflix-exclusive animated series, Gamera: Rebirth.

Design[]

Appearance[]

Viras is a large cephalopod-based kaiju, appearing as a squid/octopus with dark-yellow skin, a mouth with sharp canines and small tentacles, a pair of insect mandibles, a raptorial on each side of the head, eight tentacles with a mouth and inner serrated teeth on each end, and a head carapace. The head carapace is also capable of opening up into three pieces to reveal an organic cannon the Foundation called the Lightning of Hemueden (ヘムデンの(いかずち),   Hemuden no Ikazuchi?).

History[]

Gamera: Rebirth[]

KILL[]

Emiko shows Boco and his friends the mummified body of Viras underneath the Eustace Foundation’s Okinawa facility, and comments how the creature is unique compared to other kaiju, as it has remained miraculously preserved after 100,000 years, despite having no Orylium in its body.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress[]

In a vision brought on by Boco touching a broken Orylium crystal, it is revealed that Viras, along with the other kaiju, were bioweapons created by an extinct but advanced civilization called the Hemueden, who sought to use them to control the world. It is shown that children with a certain genetic code were ritually sacrificed to the kaiju, with a cage full of children being given to Viras, who proceeded to eat them. The Eustace Foundation, which was founded by descendants of the Hemueden, seeks to revive Viras in order to fulfill their desire for world domination. Using the Orylium crystal and pieces of kaiju carcasses, Emiko begins the process of awakening Viras, the carcasses acting as fuel for the kaiju to activate its regeneration process. However, due to Tazaki’s betrayal and the children escaping causes complications to arise, as Viras’s awakening begins to accelerate, the kaiju eventually gaining full autonomy and beginning to kill everyone in its path as the site’s personnel attempt to escape.

As Boco and his friends, Tazaki, and Dario attempt to escape in the Foundation’s rocket, Viras emerges from the underground facility, pursuing Boco specifically due to his particular genetic code. It extends its tentacles in an attempt to grab the rocket, but is unable to catch them. As the rocket enters the upper atmosphere, Viras begins charging its Lightning of Hemueden beam, but Gamera reappears and begins blasting at it with his fire breath, which Viras deflects with its energy shield. The two kaiju proceed to fight, and Viras quickly gains the upper hand, due to Gamera being weakened and injured from his previous battle with Guiron. Viras ensnares Gamera in its tentacles before electrocuting him and dropping him on the ground. Viras then uses its gravitational powers to fly into the upper atmosphere after Boco. Gamera recovers soon after and flies after Viras. Viras charges and fires its Lightning of Hemueden beam at Gamera, who uses his own gravitational powers to create an energy shield to deflect the beam before slicing Viras in half, killing it. The kaiju’s body falls back to Earth and crashes into the Foundation rocket’s control tower, critically injuring Emiko and killing her subordinate.

Abilities[]

Eletrokinesis[]

Viras can generate electricity with its head carapace and channel it through its tentacles to shock its opponents.

Energy field[]

Viras can generate an energy field to protect itself from Gamera's plasma balls.

Gravity Beam/Lightning of Hemueden[]

By opening its head carapace, Viras can charge the Lightning of Hemueden and fire an energy beam of electricity that can reach the planet's atmosphere.

Tentacle elongation[]

Viras can extend its tentacles over a long distance as it attempted to reach the Foundation's supply shuttle.

Gravitational flight[]

By positioning itself upside down, Viras can generate gravitons from its head carapace and each of its tentacle's opening to achieve flight in a similar manner to space shuttles.
