Summary[]

Around 2-3 years after the events of "From The Gallows", Clementine has already found AJ. The two are scavenging along the roads in a car. After exploring by an abandoned Railway Station Clementine accidentally trips a trap that alerts a large group of walkers outside. In a rush to flee, Clementine crashes the car, knocking both her and AJ unconscious.

She later awakens to find that AJ and her had been rescued by a group of teenagers living in a nearby Boarding School led by a young man named Marlon. The children seem to have a good set-up however it is apparent that they are running low on food and other supplies due to Marlon's caution to search further away from the school grounds. Things become worse when they discover some of their old associates have returned for them and dark secrets are brought to light about their past together...

Plot[]

Act One: End of the Road[]

A few years after the events of "From The Gallows", it is revealed that Clementine has found Alvin Jr. and that they are traveling together, supposedly for a while. Clementine and Alvin Jr. are low on supplies, and have not eaten or had fresh water for days. They travel together in a car- a rare commodity after so many years since the outbreak- without a place for them to stay outside of it.

On a long road through a forest, Clementine drives their vehicle while Alvin Jr. plays with his revolver in the backseat. Clementine tells him that him flicking the gun is getting on her nerves, making him stop. When he complains about his hunger, she can give him a magazine to practice his reading instead, but reading cooking instructions from the magazine only reminds Clementine over their lack of food, prompting her to stop him short of the end of the recipe. She teases him with a Disco Broccoli doll, but this too fails to get his mind off his hunger. After a moment, she hands him a half-empty bag of chip, AJ noting that it was the last of their food before taking it. Clementine assures him that she would be fine, saying that they would find more food before long.

Later, the duo stop at a train station surrounded by rubble and derailed boxcars. Clementine hands AJ a knife, and they both exit their car. Clementine takes a crowbar and canteen from the trunk, ready to search the area for supplies. She alerts a walker by either walking up to it or by ringing a bell at the gate, but she quickly dispatches it with a knife. (Determinant) Clementine then pries open the door to the train station, pausing briefly to quiz Alvin Jr. on what to do when entering a new place, reminding him of their rules for survival.

Once they enter, they discover a walker couple tied to each other, taped down on two chairs to keep them from standing up. AJ notices a locked security door to a train ticket booth, Clementine wanting to go through it since there was little for them to take on their side of the door. Clementine peers through the ticket booth, seeing several cans of food inside. She then looks at the walker couple and attempts to retrieve the keys to the door from them, but backs out, deeming it too risky. She notices a bottle of poison on the ground next to the walkers, along with a note asking for the walkers to be left alone penned by the couple. AJ insists on killing the walkers to get the door keys, but Clementine wants to respect their wishes to let them be, and considers having AJ crawl into the ticket booth from its small window on the counter instead.

Kill the couple: Clementine unsheathes her knife, apologizes to the walkers, and stabs the male walker through the eye, killing it. She then stabs the female walker through the chin, but this fails to put it down. She stabs it through the chin a second time, finally killing it. Alvin Jr. praises her deed. She takes the keys from the male walker, apologizes once again, and unlocks the door.

Send Alvin Jr. inside: Alvin Jr. is reluctant to go inside, but Clementine quickly convinces him by telling him that they need to know if there's food in the ticket booth, asking him to be brave. She then lifts him onto the counter, and he crawls through to the other side. While Alvin Jr. unlocks the door, the walkers stare at Clementine and futilely reach for her. AJ unlocks the security door and Clementine enters, leaving the couple alone.

This next part is non-determinant and happens regardless of the player's choices.

AJ finds bullets for his revolver inside the ticket booth, letting him reload his previously empty revolver. Clementine reminds him of how and when to use the gun. The cans of food Clementine had seen before turn out to be empty, making her toss one on the floor in frustration. The empty can then rolls toward a mattress on the floor despite her having thrown it in the opposite direction, making her suspiciously approach it. Beneath the mattress, they find and open a concealed trap door, discovering a large stash of food inside. Moments later, however, a grenade rolls out, the door having been jerry-rigged to trigger a trap if the door was opened too far. Clementine slams the door shut and dives down with AJ in her arms to avoid the blast. The two of them are uninjured by the blast, but she quickly notices a large group of walkers approaching the station, drawn by the sound of the explosion.

Not wanting to get trapped in the station, Clementine and AJ abandon their pursuit of the food and fight their way back to the car. They hop inside, but a walker prevents her from closing the driver's door. Unable to reach for her knife and keep the walker back at the same time, she attempts to kill it with the car keys, but ends up getting them lodged in its eye socket as it stumbles back from her. As walkers begin to break through the car windows, AJ assists her in fighting them off while she releases the brakes. The car slams into a tree, pinning the walker with her keys in its face between bumper and bark.

Clementine smashes the windshield by kicking it, retrieves the keys from the walker, and starts the engine. She reverses the car out of the tree, then switches into first gear, but a walker attacks her while the car hurtles down a hill. AJ attempts to shoot the walker, but the car crashes into a boulder, causing it to flip several times and knock out both of its occupants. She temporarily regains consciousness, and sees a male figure killing nearby walkers with a bow and arrow. As the man pulls AJ out of the wreckage, she calls out for him to stop before losing consciousness once again.

Clementine wakes up in a bed with her forehead wrapped in bandages, her left hand taped to the side of the bed. She breaks free from her restraint, but finds the door to her bedroom to be locked from the outside. She uses a palette knife found in a nearby a closet to pry open the door and leaves the room. As she traverses down a hallway, she sees a door creak open, making her dart for cover behind a display cabinet near the bedroom. The boy checks the room she was in, finding the door open and drawing a knife as he goes to look for her. Clementine reveals herself to him, either peacefully or by threatening him verbally or physically.

Before she can take advantage of the situation, a man in the shadows nearby aims at her with a compound bow, asking her to drop her knife. If Clementine is holding the boy hostage with the palette knife after physically threatening him, she can either comply or threaten him in return. Either way, Clementine ultimately relents when the man reveals that they have AJ and that he is unhurt. After she drops her knife, he explains that he was the one who rescued her and AJ from their wrecked car, and that he locked the door and taped her hand in case she reanimated. He then introduces himself as Marlon and the boy as Tennessee. Clementine introduces herself, and Marlon leads her out of the building to go see AJ.

Marlon asks her how long she has been out traveling, telling her that the car was damaged beyond repair and that she wouldn't be able to continue the same way without it. While other children in the yard turn to look at the newcomer, he formally introduces himself to Clementine as the leader of the school, a small community of kids who survived here without the help of any adults who had all abandoned them. One of the other kids calls for Marlon's help as walkers are approaching their gates. Needing to resolve the issue, Marlon tells her to enter the administrative building and look for a Louis, and follow his music in order to find AJ.

In the administrative building, Clementine walks down a hallway towards the source of the music. A girl, named Ruby, storms out of the music room, claiming that AJ bit her. Clementine can act defensive of him or apologize on his behalf. The girl leaves in frustration, clearing Clementine to enter the room. AJ notices her and they embrace. She then questions him on him biting the girl, and Louis informs her that he managed to calm him down by playing piano music. He introduces himself to Clementine and she does the same. Louis then shows her that Marlon placed her belongings nearby, letting her retrieve them. She takes her knife and hat, but when she gives AJ's revolver back to him, Louis questions his ability to use the gun, and Clementine's responsibility. She reassures him, (Determinant) and he goes back to playing the piano. She asks him if he knows any other songs; he replies that he does, and plays a teasing number called "Clementine" where he addresses her as his "darling" several times. She can let Louis play or make him stop. He then invites AJ to press keys on the piano, which Clementine can object to or encourage.

Marlon returns, saying that the walker situation outside their gates has escalated. He requests that Clementine and Louis help deal with them, both of them agreeing. After exiting the building, Marlon explains that a hunting party is returning to the school, and that a larger-than-normal group of walkers is stopping them from returning safely, to which another school member, named Violet, sarcastically states that the car crash attracted these walkers to the area. Clementine can attempt to introduce herself to Violet properly or argue back, but Louis intervenes and settles the discussion with a brief introduction. Willy warns them that walkers are getting closer.

Violet and Marlon step outside the gates to combat the walkers as Louis tells Clementine not worry about Violet. Louis then shows her his spiked chair leg, which he has named "Chairles." As Louis and Clementine step outside of the gates as well, AJ asks if he could help. Clementine tells him to watch her back as he remains inside the schoolyard. After Clementine kills two walkers, Louis calls out that she could use some traps that they had set up around the building, demonstrating one of them by dropping a large rock on top of a walker when it steps beneath it. Clementine can use these traps to kill a group of walkers or just handle them with her knife.

After dispatching the first wave of walkers, Marlon alerts her that the hunting party is getting closer when he sees a pair of torches nearby, telling Clementine that they would meet them halfway. She kills more walkers as she and the other students regroup with the hunting party, revealed to be three other teens carrying some dead animals for food. Violet commends the hunting party on their timing, saying that they would not have been able to hold the walkers off for much longer. Brody agrees, asking from where all of the walkers had come. Marlon tells them that they could speak later inside the schoolyard and warns them to beware of stragglers.

Violet compliments Clementine's fighting and says that she is "not half bad, considering the circumstances." Clementine thanks her. Violet spots a pair of stragglers and says that they should kill them before they draw more walkers to the school as she kills one. Clementine than kills the second walker that has an arrow in its spine. Clementine sees Aasim nearby executing a trapped walker, too distracted to see another walker approaching from behind. It attacks Aasim, Clementine rushing to his aid and stabbing it through the jaw from behind. The walker survives the stab, turning to grab her. Clementine cannot get free from the walker, but she is saved by Rosie- an American Bully dog- who knocks down the walker and bites into its brain. Rosie growls at Clementine as she shakily backs away, stalking up to her before Marlon calls her down.

After Marlon notes her reaction, Clementine tells Marlon that she had had a bad experience with a dog once. Marlon tells her that Rosie can help her get over it. Aasim thanks Clem for the help and Marlon tells them to hurry inside, saying he's hungry, to Clem's agreement. Marlon asks Aasim how the hunting went, but Aasim snaps back at asking him what he thinks but is told to be nice by Brody. Aasim says that the safe-zone is nearly dry and that they need to expand or they'll starve. Marlon says that they will talk about it later but Aasim insists that they need to talk now but is pushed back by Marlon.

As they all enter back into the Courtyard, AJ runs over to Clem, holding her hand. He tells her that he thinks they're good at killing walkers but Marlon, telling them that food is ready, touches him on the shoulder from behind causing AJ to elbow him in the balls in a knee-jerk reaction. Clem is shocked by AJ's reaction as he runs away, asking if he's alright. Marlon shakes it off, but tells Clem that AJ can't expect to eat at the same table as the rest of them, to which Clem tells him that she'll talk to AJ. Clem walks over to AJ, peering out of a gate. He explains that it was an accident and he didn't realize it was Marlon. Clem tells him that she believes that Marlon will forgive him but they need to talk to him. Despite hesitation from AJ they agree to talk to the other kids first making they're way up to finally talk to Marlon.

Clem is able to talk to anyone in the courtyard, in any order she wishes, with AJ following (determinant). She can persuade AJ to apologize to Ruby for biting her earlier which she accepts. They can interact with Aasim who is writing in a book, explaining how he believes it's important to keep a narrative on what happens within and outside the school. AJ snatches it off the desk, reading out of it. Aasim orders AJ to give it back to which Clem can either comply with or allow AJ to carry on reading it. Either way, AJ will eventually give him the book back. Next they can walk over to Louis who introduces them to Omar. He greets them but says food isn't ready quite yet.

After, they can interact with Mitch and Willy. Mitch carves a weapon with his knife which AJ finds cool, Mitch also shows AJ a knife trick, impressing him. Following this, the duo go over to find Violet and Tennessee by two graves. Tennessee looks worried but Violet tells him knock it off. Violet explains that the two graves hold Ten's sisters' belongings, Minerva and Sophie, who were both lost around a year ago. AJ asks if they should pay respects too, to which Clementine tells him they should, or it's not in their place to do so. AJ says he's ready to talk to Marlon now. The two walk over to Brody and Marlon, sitting on a step. Brody calls AJ sweet and then AJ apologizes to Marlon for hitting him and begs for them to be able to stay. Marlon accepts his apology and before they are able to talk more, Louis calls them over as the stew is done.

Clem sits on a table with AJ, Ruby and Marlon as Louis brings over her stew and sits down. Clem explains that they haven't had a hot meal in a long time and that it's delicious. AJ picks up his bowl and starts drinking from it as Ruby looks at him dismissively. Louis burps annoying Ruby as AJ burps even louder, stew around his face. Clementine can condemn his behavior or join along with him. Ruby gets up angrily saying goodnight. AJ looks sad once he finishes his stew but Louis gifts the rest of his to him.

Louis pulls out a pack of cards announcing that it is game time. Violet joins them, explaining to Clem the rules of the game, that they all get a stack of cards, everyone flips a card over, the highest number winning. Louis adds that the winner gets to ask Clem a question and that if she wins she can ask everyone else a question. Clem is hesitant about AJ but he's already enjoying himself with Ten as he joins his table. Violet wins the first round and asks where are AJ's parents to which Clem can refuse to answer or tell them that they're gone. In the next round Clem wins and can ask: about Marlon's haircut, the worst injury they've witnessed, if they've met anyone famous or the grossest thing they've eaten each getting a variety of responses from each person.

Louis, winning the next round, asks if Clem has ever had a boyfriend. She can either say she hasn't or tell them about a boy she once met. Marlon wins the next round and asks who used to take care of her. Clem can either be broad and say many people did or tell them about Lee, who looked after her a long time ago. Clem wins once more and is able to ask from the questions she had before. Next Violet asks who she thinks will die first to which Clem can choose from each one of them, shocking them individually. Lastly Louis asks if she's ever had to kill anyone she's loved. Clem can tell them that she hasn't, that she has but doesn't elaborate or admit that she had to kill Lee surprising them all. Clementine gets up and tells AJ they're going to sleep. They walk back to their room as Marlon apologizes for Louis' question.

In their room, AJ sits down at the desk and begins to draw as Violet comes in asking if she can grab something. She is surprised when she sees a coloring box on the desk which she admits is what she's looking for. Violet says it's fine and that AJ can have it but Clem can choose to give it to her anyway which makes Violet thankful. She explains about how Sophie used to live in this room and how she would paint and that Minerva was very musical. Clem asks what exactly happened to them and Violet simply tells her that they were scavenging and didn't make it back. She admits she missing them and that she believes she's too harsh with others sometimes, Clem can say she is as well or say that she likes her, surprising Violet. If Clem kept the drawing box, AJ will have drawn a picture which Violet compliments as she leaves. The picture is of AJ protecting Clem which she hangs on the wall.

Clementine looks over at AJ who is lying underneath the bunk bed asking what he's doing. He tells her that he'd rather sleep underneath as it's safer but Clem tempts him by saying its cold on the floor and it's equally safe up there. AJ is persuaded though and continues to beg to sleep on the floor to which Clementine can allow or keep on telling him to sleep on the bed. Clem gets in her bed and as she falls to sleep, AJ tells her that he's glad they're not sleeping in the car anymore to which she agrees.

Act Two: Fitting In[]

In the morning, AJ and Clementine walk up the stairs towards Marlon's office, AJ asking if Marlon will let them stay. Clem tells him that they will find out and as they walk in they see Ten playing with his toys. Ten shows AJ his Policewoman figure explaining what they used to do, much to AJ's confusion. Ten asks for AJ to give it back but he refuses forcing Clem to step in either letting AJ carry on playing with it or giving it back to Ten. Clem asks where Marlon is and he offers to go find him.

AJ walks over to Marlon's desk as he picks up an old photo of Marlon and Louis. Clem comments on how they must have known each other for a long time but suddenly hears the door slightly creep open. She turns around and Rosie bursts through the door, growling at Clem and AJ. Clem begins to walk back as Rosie continuously barks at them but Marlon walks in, calming Rosie. Marlon tells her that he didn't realize she was so scared of dogs and that Rosie just needs to get to know them. Marlon offers to show her and asks if she trusts him. If Clem trusts him, Marlon reaches for Clem's hand and slowly pulls it towards Rosie explaining that she needs to get on her level first. He continues, saying that Rosie can now get her scent and Rosie stands up and licks Clem's hand. He then tells Clem to whistle and tell Rosie to lie down, to which she does. Marlon explains that Rosie used to be the headmaster's dog before the apocalypse began but after he deserted, he left Rosie for the kids to look after.

Marlon walks over to his desk and shows Clem a map of the school and the nearby area. Clem comments on the different parts of it and Marlon explains about the safe-zone which Clem and AJ should under no circumstances cross over as something always bad happens once somebody does. Marlon begins to ask Clem for help as he knows the food situation is becoming dire and that he needs her help desperately. Clem agrees to help and asks what she can do. Marlon explains that they can either help Brody and Violet with fishing or Aasim and Louis with hunting, giving Clementine the choice.

Fishing with Brody and Violet: Clem and AJ walk along with Brody and Violet towards the Fishing Cabin talking about aspirations. Brody wishes that they could all be able to go on a road trip together which Violet dismisses but Clem can either be happy or skeptical about the idea. There is some obvious friction between Brody and Violet. Once they enter the Cabin, Clem and AJ look around and eventually find spears to fish with and Brody is upset about her and Violet's relationship which is deteriorating. She believes that Violet blames her for Sophie and Minerva's death over a year ago. Brody asks Clem to speak to Violet and see if she can find out what is going on. Fishing, Violet explains how Brody frustrates her frequently but Clem realizes her feelings for Sophie and Minerva are uncontrolled and blames Brody for them being kidnapped. As Clem catches a few fish, she pushes for her to reconnect with Brody and talk to her about their issues. Violet admits to Brody that if they went on a road trip, she would want to drive to the Grand Canyon. Brody thanks Clem for speaking to Violet.

As the four walk to find Aasim and Louis they come across a sabotaged snare initiating Violet to organize the other to search the nearby area. Clementine finds a rolled-up bit of a Bible page and AJ discovers a walker who is upside down and killed. Aasim and Louis find the rest explaining how their traps have been broken causing Brody to have a panic attack. Violet calms her, and eventually goes back to the school with Aasim but Clementine, AJ, Louis and Violet realize they have very little food to send home. Clem searches the map Marlon gave her, pointing out that the train station, where Clementine and AJ crashed earlier in the episode, may still have food left if undamaged and not destroyed. Despite Violet and Louis being hesitant of the station, being outside the safe zone, they agree to search there considering the desperate situation of the food supply.

Hunting with Aasim and Louis: Clem and AJ walk towards the hunting area along with Louis and Aasim. Aasim warns Clem and AJ about the traps lying around as they could be dangerous. Although Louis jokes about being a ninja which Clem can join in with. Louis defends himself when called Marlon's lapdog by Aasim and tells them that he just sees survival as a more of a day to day task which Clem can either agree or disagree with. Eventually, they make it towards some traps when Clem is alerted to the sound of a walker, growling nearby. She alerts the others as she looks to locate it. They walk over to the walker as it has hangs, upside down, from a tree as it has been caught in one of the traps previously been set up. Whilst Louis wants to have fun with the walker first, Aasim wishes to kill the walker and continue hunting as quickly as possible.

Help Louis: Clem is offered a swing at the walker with his bat which she either accepts or declines. Her first swing surprised Louis to the power she is capable of although only giving Clem a sliver medal for it. She swings two more times, being awarded a gold medal on the next by Louis and killing the walker on the third. Louis tells Clem to find Aasim as he re-ties the trap.

Help Aasim: Aasim wants help with hunting which Clem can join in with or help out else where. Aasim passes his bow to Clementine as he attempts to scare a rustling animal out of a bush. A rabbit runs out as Clem shoots at it, killing the rabbit.

This next part is non-determinant and happens regardless of the player's choices.

AJ alerts Clem to another snare, which has caught a baby rabbit but hasn't killed it. Clementine can choose to snap its neck and have a bit more food for the group now, or let it go and let the baby rabbit grow for more potential food further down the line. Either way, Aasim tells Clem and AJ to go with Louis to see if Brody and Violet have caught any fish whilst he takes the rabbit(s) back to the boarding school.

The three walk through the forest to the fishing cabin when AJ spots a dead walker with a fishing spear through its face. Louis is suspicious as, according to him, this isn't usual behavior for the group to do. They check the inside of the Fishing Cabin which only heightens suspicion when the place has been trashed. Brody and Violet walk into the Cabin and Brody, realizing they have been robbed, begins to have a panic attack. She eventually calms but realizes she needs to go back to the school to tell Marlon. Yet Clem, AJ, Louis and Violet realize they have very little food to send home. Clem searches the map Marlon gave her, pointing out that the train station, where Clem and AJ crashed earlier in the episode, may still have food left if undamaged and not destroyed. Despite Violet and Louis being hesitant of the station, being outside the safe zone, they agree to search there considering the desperate situation of the food supply.

This next part is non-determinant and happens regardless of the player's choices.

Act Three: Protector[]

Clementine leads AJ, Louis and Violet back to the train station, finding it to be surrounded by a small herd of walkers. Louis is immediately pessimistic about their chances upon seeing the herd, but Clementine presses on at Violet's urging, plotting out a way to get by the herd. She recalls how she had used the perimeter bell to draw out a walker when she had first visited the station, (Determinant) recognizing that one of them could use the bell to distract the herd from on top of the overturned boxcar. Violet and Clementine convince Louis to serve as the distraction while the rest of them try to sneak around the herd.

Louis's distraction proves effective, though Clementine is forced to engage two walkers that notice her movements before dropping behind cover near the train entrance. Violet similarly kills a stray walker when it tries to attack her and AJ, but manages to make it to Clementine's position. Clementine signals to Louis to move to the other upright boxcar to draw the walkers away from the entrance of the station. The herd nearly comes across the three children down below while Louis shifts over, but he regains their attention after a few tense moments. Clementine and AJ separate from Violet to allow her to cover their exit and keep an eye on Louis, making their way inside after dealing with another stray.

Back inside the train station after their prior mishap a few days earlier, Clementine and AJ regard the walker couple that had once lived there. In the station office, Clementine finds three empty duffel bags they could use to transport the supplies they found, putting them next to the trap door while AJ activates a gaslight lantern. The walkers outside the station do not notice the lantern, continuing to roam around outside the windows amid Louis's distraction. After checking to make sure AJ still has his gun, Clementine sends him down into the crawl space, where he discovers a large stash of food supplies still intact.

After a minute spent loading up the duffel bags, however, a man steps into the office, leveling a gun on Clementine and ordering her to stand. Drawn by the lantern light, he orders her to be quiet and says that he does not want to hurt her, not noticing AJ down in the crawl space at first. Clementine asks who he is, (Determinant) leading him to introduce himself as both Abel and hungry. (Determinant) Clementine watches him smoke a paper cigarette, realizing that he had been the one who had interfered with the students' hunting/fishing trips earlier. (Determinant)

Keeping his gun trained on Clementine, Abel takes one of the duffel bags and casually comments that she appeared fairly young to be out by herself, asking whether she, Louis and Violet were a part of a larger group. Clementine can either threaten him or question him back, but either way, he bemusedly announces his intention to fill his bag with her supplies. As he goes to retrieve some supplies, he finally sees AJ hiding down below, teasing him. AJ- visibly trying to set aside his fear- raises his gun on Abel, who aims his own gun back on AJ in return. AJ and Abel trade threats as Clementine assesses her options, noticing how some of the roaming walkers outside were close to the open window. Abel claims that he only intends to take the one bag and leave them with the other two, regretting their standoff and wanting them to part peacefully. When AJ refuses to relent, however, Abel asks him one final time to lower his weapon, lamenting that he did not want to shoot.

Tell AJ to stand down: Clementine directs AJ to lower his weapon, not wanting to create a commotion with the walkers outside. AJ does not want to let him steal their food, but Clementine orders him again, leading AJ to finally lower his gun. Abel stows his own weapon, going to fill up his duffel bag as Clementine watches. As he prepares to leave, however, Violet rushes in to warn her that the herd was getting larger. She is shocked to see Abel, who redraws his weapon on Violet. Taking his duffel bag, Abel flippantly thanks them for the food and runs out of the train station.

Attack Abel: Clementine calls for AJ to get down as she slams into Abel, throwing him back against the open window. A pair of walkers outside discover Abel and grab him, trying to drag him out of the station as he struggles in their grip. Abel curses at Clementine before a third walker arrives and successfully helps the other two pull him outside. Clementine regretfully turns away as Abel's struggles are silenced, turning around to find Violet bursting into the station office.

The following is non-determinant and happens regardless of the player's choices.

Violet demands to know what had happened, but Clementine simply tells her to help them fill up their duffel bags. After a few moments spent filling two duffel bags, Clementine, AJ and Violet all rush out of the station, calling for Louis to catch up to them. After each of the teenagers dispatch a walker outside of the station, they regroup on the run. Violet and Clementine each dismiss Louis's request for an explanation, Clementine promising to tell him on the way.

The four of them safely return to the school with their supplies, interrupting Brody as she expresses her fear over a stranger in the area to Marlon. Louis and Clementine display their newfound supplies to the other children. The students are overjoyed to see so much food now in their possession, but Brody is skeptical upon learning that they had left their safe zone to recover these supplies. After Violet reveals that they had encountered the man who had taken their game animals earlier, Clementine remarks that Abel had had "weird, different-colored eyes."

Brody immediately reacts to Clementine's comment with fear that Abel had followed them back to the school, leading Clementine to share how she had dealt with Abel. Brody responds negatively to Clementine's account of what had happened, concerned that he and potentially others could come after them. As the other children depart to have dinner, Brody apparently recalls an experience where she had dealt with strangers in the past, struggling with a panic attack as Marlon tries to get her to calm down. When Brody refuses to listen to him at first, Marlon snaps at her, insisting that they had nothing to worry about and telling her to keep their discussion about this to themselves. Incensed, Brody shoves Marlon to the ground in front of the other children. She warns Clementine that she would be responsible for anything that happened as a result of her confrontation with Abel and storms off back to the dorm.

Recovering, Marlon gets back to his feet and tries to gently chide Clementine for taking the students outside of the safe zone. Regardless of whether or not Clementine accepts his criticism, Marlon ultimately thanks her for delivering so much food to the school, urging her to enjoy dinner while he goes to speak to Brody. Clementine allows him to depart, going to sit down with AJ and the other children. Violet explains Brody's reaction, relating how she could get freaked out by anything happening outside the safe zone ever since the deaths of Tennessee's sisters. Aasim recommends that they take Rosie outside the walls in the morning to see if she could pick up the scent of any trespassers.

Finishing their dinners, Aasim, Louis and Violet somberly depart to return to the dorm. Tennessee suggests that they were each sad because they were near the one-year anniversary of his sisters' deaths. When Clementine notices how he himself does not appear particularly saddened, he says that he does not find death particularly scary. As finishes his work on a hand-drawing, Tennessee says that he tries not to focus on his sisters being gone and instead thinks about where they might be now.

He displays his drawing to them, depicting five people standing in front of a house that his sister Sophie would have built. As Ruby and Omar finish their meals and leave, Tennessee shows his other sister Minerva practicing the songs she would have written. He expresses hope that his own presence in the drawing would show that he would have another life waiting for him after he died. Clementine asks about the other two people in his drawing, leading him to explain that they were the walkers who killed his sisters, wanting them to be there as the people they had been before they had died. Clementine expresses some discomfort with his comment that he sometimes draws his sisters' corpses, but AJ heedlessly requests to be in Tennessee's drawing as well. Tennessee accepts, asking Clementine if she would like to appear in it. If Clementine agrees, Tennessee quickly adds the two of them into his drawing. If Clementine refuses, AJ hesitantly asks if he can remain in Tennessee's drawing, which Clementine can further allow or demand that Tennessee scribble over AJ's figure in the picture. Regardless of whether or not Clementine is in the drawing, Tennessee will give the drawing to them freely if AJ is in it or crumple up his paper and throw it away if he scribbled over AJ.

After Tennessee says that he wants to stay up to work on a new drawing, Clementine and AJ leave him in the courtyard and return to the dorm to bed down for the night. Back in their room, Clementine playfully instructs AJ to go to sleep. AJ says that he likes living at the school, recalling his experience with Louis/Violet during the daylight hours. (Determinant) Clementine sits beside him on his bed as he then remembers how McCarroll Ranch had seemed nice as well "before the blood." AJ asks her if she liked the school as well, giving her the option of agreeing or expressing uncertainty.

Clementine again tells him to go to sleep, compromising with him that he would only lay down after she blew out the candle. It is at this point that Clementine has the option of putting down any collectibles she had recovered during this episode. She recites their bedtime rhyme, happily watching as AJ lays down before blowing out the candle.

Roughly an hour later, Clementine is awoken by several muffled shouts carrying through the walls of the dorm. Likewise, AJ is roused, but Clementine tells him to stay quiet. She recognizes that the muffled shouts appear to be from someone in the building having an argument, tactfully telling AJ that it was not a monster that was causing the trouble. Clementine directs him to wait for her while she goes to investigate, relighting her candle to take with her outside of their room.

Clementine follows the noise from the argument to the basement access door, but she discovers it to be locked from both sides. (Determinant) She decides to find an alternate route to the basement via the cellar door outside the dorm, but her candle is extinguished by a heavy rainfall, leaving her to find her way in the dark. After she finally locates the cellar doors, she finds a padlock keeping the doors in place. She is able to hear the argument more distinctly, recognizing the voices of Marlon and Brody, with the latter accusing the other of being a coward. Using a nearby brick, Clementine smashes the padlock and manages to get the heavy doors open after removing the latch. She descends down the steps, backlit by the light outside in the dark confines of the cellar.

Seeing a flashlight beam behind several shelves and plumbing equipment, Clementine cautiously approaches. Brody frightfully talks about Clementine's experience with Abel, knowing that he was not alone and that his group would find them. Marlon indignantly rejects that they would find them, leading Brody to pick up on his anger and talk about how they needed to share the truth about what he had done.

Before Marlon can respond to whatever truth Brody had meant for him to share, he notices Clementine in the dark, getting her to step out into his flashlight beam. Marlon claims that he and Brody were just talking, suggesting that she go back to the dorm and sleep. Clementine refuses to leave, asking Brody what they were arguing over. Marlon again tries to dismiss her concerns, but Brody angers him when she reveals that they knew who Abel was. Clementine urges Brody to explain, Marlon growing increasingly mad as the two of them defy his efforts to keep them quiet.

Brody admits the truth that Marlon had allowed Abel "to take" Tennessee's sisters, even though they had told the other students that they had been killed by walkers. Marlon menacingly steps up to her and orders her to stop, but Brody continues, saying that Marlon had been ashamed of the truth.

Before she can finish, however, Marlon impulsively bashes her in the head with the flashlight, shocking both Clementine and himself. Brody slumps down against a boiler, her skull cracked open. Breaking down in sobs, Marlon puts down the flashlight and goes to tend to Brody, calling for Clementine to help. He irrationally says that there was a first aid kit somewhere in the cellar, leaving an incredulous Clementine to stay with Brody as she suffers from delirium due to brain bleeding. Marlon recovers his flashlight to search, leaving Clementine in the dark as Brody struggles to remember what she had been about to say.

After a moment, Brody says that both Clementine and AJ are in danger. Clementine gets her to focus, getting Brody to say that Marlon would allow Abel's group of raiders to take Clementine and AJ like he had done with Minerva and Sophie. Marlon returns and witnesses Brody's outcry right before she spasms and dies, dropping his flashlight in disbelief. He initially questions what he was going to do, then darkly realizes that Brody was going to reanimate as a walker. Clementine chases after him as he runs back out the cellar doors to the courtyard, but is too late to prevent him from sealing the doors shut and replacing the latch. He apologizes to her as he departs, saying that he could not let her tell the truth to the others.

Clementine sees that there is enough space between the cellar doors for her to slide a thin object up to the latch, but she does not have her knife after having left it in her room. She goes back to find the flickering flashlight, using it to search for something to fit between the cellar doors. She hears Brody reanimating in the dark, then locates a wooden ruler that is small enough to work. On her way back to the exit, however, she is attacked by Brody in between flashlight flickers. Clementine hurriedly tips over a shelf onto Brody then crawls under another, trying to get out of the cellar before Brody can follow.

Fumbling with the ruler after a strong thunderclap, Clementine manages to wedge the ruler through the cellar doors and lift the latch. She lifts the cellar doors, but she is tackled from behind by Brody on the steps, falling back down to the cellar floor. Almost completely knocked out, Clementine barely recovers and holds Brody at bay. She reaches out for the flashlight, using it as a weapon to fight the walker off and then cave in the rest of her forehead. Leaving the bloodied corpse behind, Clementine goes back up the steps.

She emerges into the courtyard as a thunderstorm overcasts all of the children in the courtyard. Clementine's flashlight fizzles out, but she is still able to see AJ holding Marlon at gunpoint, demanding to know where she was. Marlon accuses Clementine of having murdered Brody, shocking the other children. Discarding the busted flashlight, Clementine interrupts as the students notice the blood on Marlon's face. Marlon deflects to the blood on Clementine's hands, distracting them all long enough for him to disarm AJ and turn the gun on Clementine. She taunts that he would not be able to let the raiders take her if he shot her. (Determinant)

Clementine tells the children of what Brody had told her about Marlon letting a group of raiders take her and AJ, denouncing him for killing Brody to cover up the truth that he'd done it before to Tennessee's sisters. The students are split on whether or not to believe Clementine, which Marlon leans into by reminding them all that they had only encountered Abel because Clementine had led them out of the safe zone. Waving his gun around, Marlon takes credit for having kept all of the students alive after all the adults had left, saying that they should believe him over the newcomer who had only arrived that week. Sensing how the students were siding with Marlon, Clementine looks to make a direct appeal.

Appeal to Louis: Clementine calls for Louis to get involved, but he is unwilling, not wanting to step up against Marlon. After Clementine either pleads with him or threatens him, Louis hesitantly tells Marlon that he should stop, but Marlon insists that Clementine was a murderer and that they could not "let her walk away." Louis falters again, requiring Clementine to press him again to step up. As Marlon gathers his resolve and prepares to shoot, Louis slowly puts himself in between Clementine and the gun. Marlon despairs over Louis's defense, leading to Aasim joining with Louis in calling for Marlon to put the gun down.

Appeal to Violet: Clementine calls for Violet to believe her, but Marlon insists that she should not as she had only just met Clementine a few days earlier. Violet concedes that she does not really know her, requiring Clementine to press her to do something. Marlon tries to remind her of Minerva, insisting that she would want him to pull the trigger to make them "all feel safer." Clementine challenges Violet to really think about it, leading Violet to finally get involved, standing in between Clementine and the gun before pointedly drawing her meat cleaver. Marlon is disappointed but not surprised by Violet's dissent, but Aasim joins with Violet in calling for Marlon to put the gun down.

The following is non-determinant and happens regardless of the player's choices.

Several students surround Marlon and slowly close in on him. Starting to crack, Marlon shakily points his gun at his friends in turn, shouting over the thunder that he was trying to protect them. Clementine berates him for his actions, bringing up that Brody had died and Tennessee's sisters had been taken on his watch. (Determinant) Marlon snaps back at her that he had "made the right call" and would do it again, letting the other students finally see that Clementine was telling the truth. Tennessee confronts Marlon over how he had sacrificed Minerva and Sophie, making him break down and confess that he had in fact killed Brody. He says that he had wanted to try to rescue Minerva and Sophie at a later point, but he never could have tried without admitting the truth.

With Marlon no longer pointing the gun at any of them, Clementine has the option of either attacking him, talking him down or letting Tennessee talk him down. If Clementine attacks him, he tries to shoot her, but she manages to disarm him and either knocks him down or lets him collapse. Clementine decides his fate as the other students watch, (Determinant) declaring that he had to leave and would never be allowed back. (Determinant)

Alternatively, if Clementine talks him down, she tells him that they could still fix his mistake, (Determinant) leading him to drop his gun. If Clementine lets Tennessee talk him down, Tennessee surprises Marlon by forgiving him, devastating Marlon and making him drop his gun. After he drops the gun, (Determinant) a broken Marlon says that he knows that he'd betrayed them and asks that they just let him leave and never return. (Determinant) The other students remain back behind Clementine as she decides what to do with him. (Determinant)

Before anyone can react, however, Marlon is suddenly shot in the head from behind, covering Clementine in his blood. As his corpse hits the ground, Clementine looks up to see AJ holding the gun, the other students stepping up in horror. AJ is confused by their reaction, reciting back Clementine's rule about how to deal with monsters.

  • When searching through the house, Clementine can find a can of peaches with same logo from "A House Divided". AJ also finds a jar of "Banang", something from another game made by Telltale, "Sam and Max".
  • This is the first episode of the Telltale Series without having any determinant human deaths.
  • The title of this episode refers to Clementine and AJ finding a place they want to protect after years of living in and migrating in their car.
  • Remaining silent when AJ swears at the train station results in AJ correcting himself, interpreting Clementine's silence as disapproval.
  • Failing to decide whether to let Abel take some food or attack him results in Abel shooting AJ and Clementine, resulting in their non-canon deaths. The player will then respawn and be allowed to try again.
  • Failing to decide whether to solicit Louis's aid or Violet's aid when trying to convince the students of Clementine's innocence results in Marlon sensing the lack of support for Clementine and deciding to execute her, resulting in Clementine's non-canon death. The player will then respawn and be allowed to try again.
    • In general, remaining silent whenever Marlon is pointing a gun at Clementine results in her non-canon death.
  • This episode is the first of two to break away from The Walking Dead's three word naming convention, with the other being Broken Toys.

Goofs/Errors[]

  • When originally released, if the player had chosen to stay in Wellington at the end of Season 2, Clementine would have had a scar on her forehead, the same scar for leaving Wellington with Kenny, instead of a scar on her right cheek as seen in Season 3. This was due to the fact the Story Builder for Season 4 didn't include any mention of Wellington. Players that were not using the Story Builder that had previously chosen the Wellington ending would have been defaulted to the Kenny ending. However, this was corrected in a patch released about a week after the release of Suffer The Children.
  • When asked at the card game if Clementine had ever been with other people, she can mention Lee by name and tell the trio about her experience with Lee. If later asked if she had ever killed someone she loved, she can say "Lee, his name was Lee" as if she hadn't already told the three of them about him.
    • Also during the card game, if Clementine choses to ask the group what the worst thing they have ever eaten was, and the save file had been imported from "Starved For Help" or beforehand, she will mention eating Mark's leg regardless of whether she actually did or not.
  • If the player chooses to save Doug in Story Builder, Lilly is shown shooting him in the cheek in cold blood, while in the original game Doug was shot in the back of the head and accidentally killed by Lilly.

Bugs[]

  • The final walker that Clementine encounters before entering the train station grabs her ankle after she and AJ separate from Louis and Violet. If the player completes the button prompt at the precise moment the screen changes to Clementine's non-canon death, the screen immediately reverts back to Clementine killing the walker, but the audio cuts out and mutes. The audio does not return until the end of the scene.

Deleted Sequences[]

  • In the Pre-Game footage, when Marlon asks Clementine, "Take it you know how to handle yourself?" one of the original options of a reply was "My car would disagree", which has been changed to "It's taken its toll".
  • When Marlon says to Clementine "Don't listen to her, Clem. She's acting crazy. She gets this way sometimes, you just gotta tune it out," his original line was "Don't listen to her, Clem. She's acting crazy. I think it's that time of the month again, you know?"
  • Clementine could originally tackle Tenn outside her room, not near the cabinet.
  • James has unused animation for the card game, hinting that he was originally suppose to appear in this episode.
