That's what's good about a broken heart. When you're looking at it all broken and shattered on the floor... You figure out the pieces you need versus the ones you liked. If you're ready to move on, that is...
―Javier to Clementine about overcoming loss. (Determinant)[src]

Javier García is the protagonist of A New Frontier and a survivor of the outbreak in Telltale's The Walking Dead. A former professional baseball player, Javi's life fell apart prior to the outbreak with the destruction of his career, and him not being there when his father was ill, which caused a strain in his relationship with his family upon his father's death. To Javier, the most important thing to him in regard to survival is toughing it out for the ones he loves, though he isn't ready to lay down his life for others as long as there's a more reasonable path to take. His voice of reason is respected among his friends and family, even if it does not get him where he wants to go.

Overview

Javi is portrayed in accordance to the player's choices, though in almost all circumstance he takes the position of an arbitrator and the voice of reason, deliberating between equally viable options in a manner that seeks to disarm any opposition within or outside of his group, such as when Clementine and Eli get into an altercation over void bullets where he can either attempt to support Clementine or ask her to calm down, or when his family gets caught using supplies that belong to the New Frontier and he must attempt to negotiate. In both scenarios, Javi proves to be a capable combatant, managing to knock out Lonnie after a brief struggle and successfully disarmed Eli despite him attempting to stab him with a blade. However, Javi was overpowered by his brother David in their fight, being tackled to the ground and choked with a wrench despite initially holding his own. (Determinant)

He often is delegated the de-facto leader in a variety of circumstances due to his collected nature, which is a position that he doesn't exploit to his power, instead using it to defend his group and protect them. This can be seen when he and his family lived inside the van, when the group chances upon Jesus hiding away near Richmond and Javi goes to investigate and after Mariana is shot and killed, where he can either support Kate after she is shot or remain with Clementine to avenge Mariana's death and stop the New Frontier from trying to find the remainder of his family.

Despite this, Javi did not display true leadership skills until several years had passed in the apocalypse. It was revealed through dialogue that Javi appeared to be insular in his desires and goals in life, and decided to exert most of his focus into his baseball career, and in turn blocked out things that he should have considered paramount, such as his sick father and extended family.

He can be quite altruistic and act with the sole benefit of the group in mind as opposed to his own safety. This is seen when he hands himself in to the New Frontier to secure Francine's release, or when he risks his own life at the expense of protecting Clementine from the New Frontier. (Determinant) This trait is expressed to a lesser degree when he allows himself to be attacked by David at the start of the apocalypse so that David could have some catharsis for the death of their father and Javi's neglect of the family.

The player can determine whether or not Javi is somewhat amoral, irrational or uncaring. This is evident in his ignorance towards consequences of his actions, stealing supplies from the New Frontier, or shooting a fleeing member of a New Frontier despite the group's insurmountable force.

Javi is sardonic and witty, easily exchanging jabs with Clementine and Kate. He is quite charismatic and is mentioned to be able to charm his way out of most situations and is seen to do exactly that with characters such as Clementine and Tripp, who come to trust him quite quickly due to his amicable disposition.

Pre-Apocalypse

Baltimore, Maryland

Javi was a professional baseball player[2] in Baltimore, possibly under the jersey number 25 (which he is seen wearing in the extended preview). On his team, he played shortstop. However, he was expelled from the league after he was caught betting on his own games, a scandal that went into the news and was still remembered by some survivors even for four years after the apocalypse. He once played a minor league game in Arkansas before he was expelled, commissioning a charter plane to fly him there.

Javier and David both decide to spend time together at a carnival, and play baseball against softball pitching machines. David is obviously less skilled than his brother, and isn't able to hit a single ball. Javier can either continue to instigate his brother by striking the ball and hitting it out of the park while complimenting himself and calling out David for being bad at the game, or intentionally miss. Either way, David is angered by Javier's constant prodding or taking it easy on him, and while he is distracted gets hit by a ball and steps out of the ring while Javier attempts to catch up. The two brothers argue, and David asks Javier to make a promise that he will support Gabe, Mariana, and Kate if David is gone. Javier can either promise to do so, or refuse responsibility and claim it's David's responsibility.

At some point in time Kate slowly tries to start an affair with Javier, something Javier can object to in favor of respecting his brother and the sanctity of marriage, or indulge himself into by showing affection to her. Either way Kate admits she wants to leave David, who suddenly appears and starts to question what the two are doing while accusing Javi of judging everyone but himself and being the "idiot fuck-up". Javi can get back at David's rant and mistreatment of Kate by telling him that she's going to leave him or he can admit that David's right and apologize for the broken glass.

Evidently due to his gambling issues, Javier is bankrupt to the point that he can't even pay David $10 for a lost game of dominoes. After his father offers to pay the bet for him, this leads to Javier going in his father's wallet for the cash before discovering a cancer diagnosis inside. Both brothers are saddened and shocked that their father didn't tell them, but Salvador stands on his decision and says that "old people get cancer" dismissing it as just something that happens.

If Javier backs up Salvador's decision not to get treatment (Determinant) since his father argues that it would be to much money just for another month and another game of dominoes to lose, Salvador will be slightly disappointed in Javier for not sticking with his brother. Salvador's final wish for Javier to carry out after his death is to not let his brother down and always back him up.

Post-Apocalypse

A New Frontier

"Ties That Bind - Part 1"

At the onset of the outbreak, Javi was on the highway desperately trying to get to his parents' family home, having heard his father was dying and he was needed.

Extreme traffic on the highway caused him to ditch his car and sprint all the way to the home, arriving only to find his brother David on the porch drinking cans of beer. David subsequently revealed to Javi that their father had already died before his arrival. Devastated, Javi began frantically apologizing for not being there only for David to punch him to the ground and berate him for not being there and putting his baseball career before his family. Javi either furthered his apology or permitted David to beat him as punishment. (Determinant)

Before Javi could be hurt further, David's son Gabe came outside and asked what they were doing. Javi made up an excuse, meeting Kate who told him his mother needed him. Once inside, Javi was smacked by his mother who also chastised him for not being there for her husband. Javi hugged his mother and apologized for not being there.

He and his family then mourned for Salvador's passing while Hector called for someone to take Salvador's body away, but was unable to due to the line being off service. Mariana left Salvador's bedroom with a cup, claiming her grandfather was awake. Curious, the family entered Salvador's room to see him standing. Javi watched as Hector approached and asked how it was possible that he is alive. The now zombified Salvador starts attacking Hector, with Javi and David immediately restraining their father. Their mother asked what they were doing, believing that her husband is still alive, only to get bitten. Amidst the chaos that followed, Javi reluctantly killed his zombified father.

Javi then helped David prepare to take Mrs. García to the hospital, warning his brother not to take the highway as it is blocked. Javi then found a crying Mariana under a table, taking her to get in the van so everyone else could flee towards the hospital. As they departed, Javi noticed that Hector was bitten, before Hector covers his wound.

The story cuts to four years later in present day. Javi, now older with scruffy facial hair, is watching a large herd of walkers approaching in the distant with Kate. She asks Javi to inform her when they reached the campfire in order to understand how fast the herd was moving. Once the herd did so, she notes that it took them under fours hours so they needed to keep moving.

Returning back to their van, they depart while Mariana and Gabe sleep in the back. Driving down the road, they discuss the herd and Kate begins to smoke weed, Javi either scolding her or partaking in it (Determinant). They discuss David (who we learn has not been seen since the incident with the men's father) and the children, with Kate expressing her worries about Gabe's recent attitude, and Javi putting it down to puberty, stating that "once you start getting boners, the whole world goes to shit." Their talk eventually wakes the children, who notice the smell of weed regardless of Javi's possible decision to admit to it. (Determinant). The family reach a junkyard, where Javi decides they should search for supplies.

Javi soon finds a ladder that leads to another section of the junkyard. Taking Gabe with him, they find a wagon with plenty of fuel and cabin containing an array of foodstuffs. As Kate and Mariana enter, Gabe expresses a desire to stay in the hut for the night despite Kate objecting; Javi can either agree with the former or the latter (Determinant).

Leaving the hut, Javi returns to a previously-discovered ambulance to siphon some gas, only to be discovered by a hostile group. Their leader, Max, demands to know where the rest of Javi's group are, holding him at gunpoint and taking him to the cabin while the others search the area. Kate, Gabe and Mariana have meanwhile hidden under the cabin. After forcing Javi inside the hut and finding his food eaten, Max beats Javi before leaving Lonnie to guard him. After hearing a noise under the cabin, Javi either jumps to his family's defense after they are discovered or he immediately threatens or starts a fight with Lonnie (Determinant). The fight ends with Lonnie getting knocked unconscious and the hostile group returning to find out. Furious, Max knocks Javi out with the handle of his gun.

Waking up, Javi finds himself in a truck, his hands tied and a member of the hostile group driving the truck next to him. Realizing that his family is still at the junkyard, he attempts to plea with the man only to be told to shut up. Suddenly, a tree falls down, causing the man to crash the truck. With the man briefly stunned, Javi takes a gun and exits the truck; his former guard stumbling out also. As the man starts running away, Javi orders him to stop and points a gun at him, either letting him go or shooting him dead (Determinant).

Despite believing he is safe, he is once again put at gunpoint by a stranger, who subsequently forces Javi to drop his gun. After criticizing his choice regarding how he handled Rufus, the girl orders him to stay as she begins searching the truck and reveals while doing so that she stopped the truck to use to her own ends. The girl then begins searching Javi's backpack, claiming that what she loots is payment for saving him. As she attempts to leave, ordering him to close his eyes and count to a hundred, Javi explains his situation and begs to know where the junkyard is located, wanting to return to his family. Having knowledge of the junkyard, the girl (revealed to be an older Clementine) agrees to take him there in return for his van. Javi can either agree or disagree, though Clementine says he has no choice (Determinant).

The duo begin walking down the road, with a manacled Javi attempting to make small talk about their situation. However, they notice a herd of walkers, prompting Clementine to declare that they should head to a nearby town to get shelter. until it passes. After cutting his bindings, they push through the herd to the entrance of Prescott. Arriving at the gate, they find it shut, the gate keeper urging them to kill the walkers before letting them inside. As they fight the walkers, Clementine switches to her handgun only to find the bullets not working; Javi can shoot the walker attacking her or allow Clementine to save herself (Determinant). Tripp soon opens the gate to let them in, simultaneously letting in a rider named Francine.

The gate keeper introduced himself as Tripp; he warns them not to cause any trouble during their stay as the duo enters Prescott. Once inside the town, Clementine explains Prescott's history. The town used to be an old airstrip that turned into a town after the apocalypse. Clementine leads Javi toward the bar to talk to a person about her bullets. Before leaving him in the bar, Clementine suggests Javi go and make some friends. Heading toward the bar desk, Javi finds the barkeeper playing poker with Francine. The man introduces himself as Conrad. Conrad, the owner of the bar, recognizes Javi. He remembers the news about how he got banned from baseball due to betting on himself. Javi builds a rapport with the pair and attempts to help Francine win a game of poker against Conrad (the cards will alter meaning Francine always loses no matter which option the player chooses). Conrad gives Javi a drink for his help in allowing Conrad to win, when they are interrupted by Clementine arguing with someone at a table.

Javi approaches and asks what is going on. Clementine explains that she traded him a crate of batteries and he gave her bullets that wouldn't fire. She was furious that he could have gotten them killed. The argument turns violent when Clementine proved her point by shooting the defective bullets at Eli. Eli asks sarcastically if Javi is Clementine's bodyguard, to which he either says that he is, or that she doesn't need one (Determinant). Javi defends Clementine as Eli tried to knife her. He receives a cut at the corner of his eye before disarming the man. Getting more irate, Clementine continues to fire the defective bullets at Eli to prove her point. The argument ends when one of the defective bullets turns out to be working and Clementine inadvertently shoots Eli through the forehead. Horrified, Clementine begs Javi to cover for her. Conrad enters with his shotgun and furiously demands that Clementine drop her gun. Tripp soon appears and demanded to know what is going on.

If Javi chooses to cover Clementine: Javi covers for Clementine and claims that she was justified. He claims that Eli attacked them first and showed his wound as proof. Tripp puts them both into lock-up until he figures out what to do with them. Once locked up, Tripp scolds Javi but relents and tells Javi that he will get someone to look at his eye before leaving. Clementine thanks Javi for having her back at the hanger, but she tells Javi not to expect that it will make them friends. Nevertheless, the relationship between them will be more positive. Eleanor, an EMT, comes to the cage and begins treating Javi's wound. Tripp soon returns and tells them that he will take them to the junkyard tomorrow. Once he leaves, Eleanor suggested that they can leave through the back gate at midnight instead.

If Javi tells the truth: Javi tells them the truth about what happened, much to Clementine's disappointment. Tripp accepts the truth and thanks Javi for being honest. Before taking Clementine outside to talk, Tripp tells Javi to find Eleanor so she can treat his wound. Tripp comes to the infirmary with Clementine. He tells Javi that he will take them to the junkyard tomorrow and suggested that they should rest at the infirmary. After Tripp leaves, Eleanor suggests to Javi that they can leave at midnight through the back gate instead. Once alone, Clementine expresses her disappointment in Javi; she expected him to cover for him. The pair then decide whether to depart with Eleanor on horseback immediately or with Tripp in his truck in the morning (Determinant).

The next day, Javi reaches the junkyard with Clementine and Eleanor/Tripp, (Determinant), finding Mariana's tape player. Javi calls Mariana's name and Mariana emerges from a hiding place and is reunited with Javi. She explains that she got separated from Kate and Gabriel when the herd showed up. They began looking for Kate and Gabe and eventually find them inside a truck surrounded by walkers. After dispatching the walkers, the reunited family begin leaving the junkyard. Javi has the option to kiss Kate upon their reunion.

As they start leaving, Mariana finds her headphones on the ground and smiles back at her family. As she does so, she gets shot through the head by the same hostile group of survivors from the night before. Led by a man, the hostile group begin shooting at them. Javi ducks for cover. When Kate tries to get to Mariana's body, she gets shot in the abdomen. This prompts Gabe to rush to her defense; Javi can either help them or return fire (Determinant).

As the group regroup under cover, Tripp/Eleanor urge them to retreat back to Prescott so they can get Kate medical help. Clementine suggests that her and Javi should stay behind and fight to end the group's threat.

If Javi retreats: Javi agrees to Tripp/Eleanor's suggestion and is forced to leave Clementine behind when she refuses to leave without taking out their attackers first. Heading back to the car or horses, (Determinant) Javi looks at Mariana's body one last time before retreating. The episode ends as Kate loses consciousness as Javi desperately pleads her to wake up.

If Javi stays behind to fight: Javi agrees to Clementine's suggestion to stay and fight. He tells Gabe to help Tripp/Eleanor take Kate away as he stays behind. Once the family leaves, Javi and Clementine fire back at their attackers. One of them throws a grenade at them. The episode ends with Javi throwing the grenade back at them or tackling Clementine to protect her from the blast.

"Ties That Bind - Part 2"

In a flashback from before the Apocalypse, Javi was staying in David's house. He had just lost his career as a professional baseball player. Kate was washing the dishes as Javi approached; he wanted to help. Kate politely declined and said he was family. They talked about his current situation. Javi was worried about his future due to his action of betting on himself. They talked about David and how he had an issue with Javi's presence. Javi teased with the idea of traveling around. Kate asked if he would take her with him. She expressed that she always wanted to travel to Norway to see the Northern Lights. While washing the dishes, Kate accidentally broke David's army glass and cut herself. Javi moved to help her and held stop the bleeding. David came in and saw either Javi holding Kate's hand or not (Determinant).

When David saw his army glass broken, he got mad at Kate. David then turned his attention to Javi. He was angry at Javi for judging him.

Tell him off: Javi fired back at David. He told him that Kate was leaving him and that she said it herself. This angered David and shocked Kate. Furious, David replied that in three days time, Javi will leave his house. Once David leaves the kitchen, Kate reprimanded Javi for his blunt words before leaving him alone.

Let it go: If Javi decided to let it go and admit that it wasn't his business, David calmed down. Kate apologized for breaking his glass. David forgave her and walked out of the kitchen. Kate assured Javi that she can handle him and that his mood will pass.

The game then returns to the present day.

If Javi stayed behind to fight: Javi regains consciousness. He found himself on the ground and a walker crawling towards him. Clementine shoots the walker and advises Javi to take it easy. She explains that their attackers got away. Javi remembers Mariana, whose corpse is nearby. Clementine tells him that she has already dug a grave for her. Javi carried his niece's corpse as Clementine leads him to the grave. He lays her corpse in the grave and, after some last words, begins filling her grave. He can either keep her tape player or leave it with Mariana. If he keeps it, later he can either keep it for himself or give it to Gabe.

Clementine thanks Javi for staying and states that he probably saved her life. Their attention turns toward a sound nearby. They find one of the attackers now zombified. Javi kills the walker. He notices that the walker had a brand scorched into his flesh; the same brand that the hostile group had. Clementine reveals her knowledge about them. The group is called the New Frontier and she has had encounters with them. Clementine drives Javi back to Prescott in one of the cars left behind by the New Frontier.

If Javi went back to Prescott: Back at Prescott, Javi and Gabe are at Kate's side as Eleanor does surgery on her wound. After much effort, Eleanor manages to take out the bullet inside Kate. Amidst the surgery, Gabe can either stay or get told to leave (Determinant). If Gabe stayed, he accidentally applies alcohol to Kate's wound instead of water, which causes her pain. Ashamed by his mistake, Gabe leaves (Determinant).

Eleanor advises Javi that although Kate is stable, she is still bleeding inside and it is only a matter of time before she dies. She suggested that he go and search for Gabe. Javi finds Gabe outside the gate, furiously stabbing a walker. Javi comforts his nephew about the recent events. Gabe says that he wants to go back and bury Mariana and that he was ashamed of how helpless he was. He promised that he won't sit back and watch next time. They then spot Clementine returning with a car or trucks approaching (Determinant).

Retreating back to the gate, Javi goes to the lookout where Conrad and Tripp are already armed with guns. Max appears with Badger, the man who led the attack on the junkyard, and a group of The New Frontier. Max demands that Javi surrender himself due to his action against their group. Badger pushes the issue when he reveals that Francine is now their hostage. Either Javi can comply to their demands or he can start firing his guns (Determinant). The confrontation turns violent either way and Francine gets shot and killed. Badger disobeys Max's authority and orders the truck loaded with walkers to ram Prescott's gate, causing a massive breech and resulting into total carnage. Javi and his group manage to flee the ruined town in a set of cars, as the rest of the residents get killed or captured by the New Frontiers.

Stopping at the road to regroup, the group deal with their current situation. After defusing a tense moment with Conrad who blames Javi for Francine's death, Clementine suggests that they should head to the community in Richmond to look for shelter and medical aid for a still-ailing Kate. With a destination in mind, the group quickly move on.

In the night, as Eleanor drives the car, Javi talks to Kate about her current situation and later Gabe. She ponders about Gabe's future and whether he might turn into David or Javi. She asks Javi to take care of him when she is gone, to which Javi can promise her that he will (Determinant). If Javi took a water bottle while in Prescott after talking with Eleanor, he can give it to Kate.

The next morning, the group arrive at an abandoned gas station. Tripp signals them to stop due to their path being blocked by cars. After assessing the area, Javi finds an abandoned jeep with a winch in a garage. Using a jumper cable he finds in an abandoned car, he powers the jeep by connecting it to Tripp's car. As the blocked cars get pulled out of the way, the noise attracted the attention of a large group of walkers. After clearing a road for Eleanor, Javi orders her to quickly take Kate to Richmond. Before the remaining survivors can escape in Tripp's car, the winch pulls another vehicle into it.

Javi quickly orders his friends to head toward the roofs of the gas station to escape the walkers, and nearly gets bitten before Conrad pulls him out of harm's way. On top of the roof, the group begin arguing about their current situation. Their argument stopped when both Javi and Tripp realize that someone was watching them from roof of another building. The group immediately take cover. Javi sneaks out to find the stranger. When he reaches the other building by using the bridge, Javi apparently discovers him looking at his group through the hole of a billboard. Regardless of whether he makes himself known to the mysterious watcher or shoots him, Javi discovers that the figure was a decoy. Upon hearing a safety click off, Javi drops his gun and raises his hands at the order of the watcher standing behind him. The two briefly ask each other about their motives and whether or not there would be trouble between them. Javi can choose to threaten him or try to reassure him that he would suffer no harm in regards to Javi's group after he is asked about whether or not they would shoot at him.

The group come to Javi's aid and surround the stranger. He surrenders and the group began questioning if he is with the New Frontier, even searching him for the distinctive brand (Determinant). The man denies that he is part of the group. He reveals that he was heading to Richmond when he heard that the New Frontier took over. Realizing that Kate and Eleanor are heading into danger, the group need to catch up with their friends. The man offers to join them and lead them to Richmond through a train tunnel. Javi can either decide to tie the man or trust him (Determinant). Before heading out, the man introduces himself as Paul, but that his friends call him Jesus.

After having walked through the tunnel for a time, Clementine asks Javi for his attention. She explains that she hasn't told the whole truth about her encounters with the New Frontier. She revealed that she wasn't their prisoner, but was a member of the group. She showed her brand as proof, much to Javi's shock. She explains that if the group is in control of Richmond, she can't be seen by them and thus she has to leave once they are in safety.

Catching up to the group, they reached the train path heading toward Richmond. This section of the tunnel turns out to be filled with walkers. After Conrad impulsively started shooting the walkers and thus alerting the herd to the group, Javi and the other fight their way toward the end of the tunnel. The path is blocked by an abandoned train. Javi manages to break the door to a carriage and stays with Clementine and Gabe to block the door as the rest of the group move ahead to clear a path.

Javi succeeds in blocking the train door and, as they are about to leave, Conrad appears and points a gun at Clementine. He reveals that he heard their talk and demanded Clementine to reveal her brand. Conrad suggested that they should hold Clementine as captive and bring her to Richmond to negotiate with the New Frontiers. Clementine in turn warns them that the New Frontier won't bargain with them. The confrontation turns heated when Conrad grabs Gabe at gunpoint as captive and threatens to kill him if Javi doesn't comply.

Agreeing to Conrad's plan: Javi apologizes to Clementine as he turns his gun at her. Clementine either gets furious and berates Javi for his betrayal (if you didn't cover for her after Eli was shot in the bar), or just silently glares at him (if you did cover for her) as Conrad leads her out at gunpoint. Gabe also scolds Javi, calling him a coward; Javi defends his action, claiming it is best for Kate (Determinant).

Shoots Conrad: Javi shoots Conrad in the head, killing him. Clementine urges them to leave and that she will find her own way before leaving. Javi briefly consoles a shocked Gabe before leaving the train and Conrad's corpse behind.

Rejoining Jesus and Tripp, the latter will either ask why Conrad was holding Clementine at gunpoint or where Conrad was (Determinant). Continuing forward, the group find Eleanor's car abandoned. They find Kate still inside the car, but Eleanor nowhere in sight. Kate explains that she went to get help, but never returned. Seeing no other option, Javi carries Kate towards Richmond's entrance.

They reach the gate, Javi calling for attention. Max appears, demanding to know why they are there. Javi pleads to let them in to save Kate, complying or refusing Max's demands that they disarm (Determinant).

The gate of Richmond opens as one of the New Frontier's leaders walks out, demanding to know what is going on. Javi realizes the leader is David.

"Above The Law"

The episode begins with a flashback taking place three months after the initial walker outbreak. Javier, Kate, Gabe, and Mariana were taking shelter at the Garcia house, waiting for David to return after failing to meet him at the hospital. Javier and Kate were out on a scavenging run to retrieve a propane tank from a neighboring house for their stove, only to find the tank empty and to have a near-death encounter with Drew, one of Gabe's friends who became a walker, which Javier would kill during a struggle. The pair returned home and decided that they must leave, with supplies running low and the abandoned neighborhood becoming increasingly dangerous. They relayed this decision to the kids, who leave a note for David to find (its contents are determined by the player's decision). Then the family gathered their remaining supplies before departing in the van, abandoning the house for good.

Flashing forward to the present-day, David comes out of Richmond's gates and sees his family. David goes over to Kate and asks "What the hell happened?". Javier reveals Kate had gotten shot and Max and his group wouldn't let them in. David takes Kate and Gabe to the infirmary, but Javier, Jesus, Tripp, and Conrad (Determinant) are stopped by Fern, who informs them that all newcomers must be placed in quarantine. Javi can either call out to David, Gabe, or inform both that he'll come see them as soon as he can. So then Javi, Jesus, Tripp, and Conrad (Determinant) meet Eleanor in the quarantine room. Eleanor explains that the car engine broke down and, panicked, went to get help and had asked the guards to come in and explained that she had a wounded patient.

David soon comes in and asks Javi if he would like to see Kate in the hospital, saying Kate had been asking to see him. David and Javi are on their way to the infirmary. Along the way, David introduces Javi to Ava, David's right-hand person and second in command of security. Then later David asks Javi what happened to Mariana. Javi explains to David that Badger and Max attacked Prescott and ambushed Javi and his group, resulting in Mariana's death by being shot in the head. David becomes visibly saddened and angry due to this. Then Javi and David go see Kate, and see Dr. Lingard checking Kate for bites and wounds, Kate then pretends to be hurt and David leaves the room to get Dr. Lingard. Kate tells Javier that she is worried that she had a bad feeling about Richmond. David comes back and acts suspiciously when he sees that Kate is fine, with Dr. Lingard defending Kate by saying that pain often comes and goes with abdominal wounds. He examines Kate's stitching and offers to vouch for Eleanor upon discovering she is in quarantine. Then David takes Javi to meet Joan and Clint, who are trying to choose between Joan's cake and Clint's creamed spinach. Javier can choose either or say everything looks delicious. After some conversation with Joan and Clint, Max comes in and tells how Javi was siphoning gas from one of their vehicles in the junkyard. Javi can reveal that Mariana was killed by New Frontier members or concede, saying he has nothing to defend himself with against Max's claims. Regardless, Joan decides she has heard enough and decides to kick Javi, Tripp, Jesus, and Conrad (Determinant) out of Richmond. As they leave, Ava gives them a supply bag and says that David packed the bag and warns them to not "mess this up". So Javi, Jesus, Tripp, and Conrad go to the X on the map that was on the baseball bat. They reach the warehouse as they are getting closer, and at this point Clementine joins them. Clementine then has a flashback of when she was trying to get medience for AJ. Regardless of whether you choose to inject AJ or put the drugs back, Clementine then soon gets caught by the group and is kicked out. Clementine then has the option of saying a tearful goodbye to AJ or spitting in David's face. After the flashback, Javi has the option of hugging Clem. They reach the warehouse and David joins them to say 'Goodbye" but notice that Max, Badger, and Lonnie have secretly been raiding towns such as The Kingdom and Prescott. Javi goes and chases Badger, Clementine and Jesus go chase Lonnie, and David goes after Max. Badger then is either killed by Javi, Conrad, (Determinant) or Tripp, or left to turn into a walker. Javi, Conrad (Determinant) and Tripp soon hear a noise and rush downstairs to find that David has overpowered Max. Max pleads that he can expose Joan for her role in the raids and that the raids were performed on her orders. Javi can choose to execute Max by shooting him in the head, adamant that he serves no purpose to the group, or spare him, to which David will hit Max on the back of the head with the gun and say he 'needed that'. If Javi takes too long, David will shoot Max instead. So David, Max (Determinant), Javi, Tripp, Conrad, (Determinant) Jesus, and Clementine rush back to Richmond before Lonnie does. Before Jesus leaves, if Javi was the one to kill Badger earlier, Jesus will ask if 'that' made him feel better, to which Javi can reply that it did. Jesus will warn Javi about acting violent. Later, when the group splits up, Tripp and Javi see two guards patroling the back streets of the back entrance and has two choices to distract them so he ad Tripp can move past. Javi can choose to break a window or break an electrical box. Javi soon joins David in the council and trying to convince everyone that Joan ordered raids on towns to keep Richmond going. Joan tries to cut off Javi, so Javi and David gets knocked out and sent to the quarantine/ or David can take a Guard's gun and shoot Lonnie (Off Panel & Off Screen)

"Thicker Than Water"

After Joan sends David and Javier to the quarantine room, an unnamed guard and Rufus are shown locking them there, if Javi spared Rufus in Episode 1. David tries to convince the guards that Joan is making a mistake of Richmond, as the guard is speaking Clint comes down tries to calm everyone down and escorts the guards out of the room. A few minutes later Joan comes down with her escort and asks David to come with her. After David was taken, Javi tries to find a way out of the room before Joan comes back, he notices that there is a grate on the window and then sees Kate or Gabe, depending on your choice last episode, outside the window and tries to help Javi out of the room. Gabe/Kate soon leads Javi to Eleanor's place.

They get inside, and are greeted by Kate/Gabe. Javier, Ava, and Gabe go to the armory and run into Bob. Ava distracts Bob meanwhile Javi and Gabe sneak into the armory and hides from the guard Gabe will run out and attack him, the guard fights back and Javi steps in and fights the guard, before Javi knocks him out the guard has a chance of stabbing Javi in the arm. Ava comes back and tells Javi to put him in the locker, Javi goes to Dr.Lingard and will see Clementine looking for medicine for her "Incident". If Javi was stabbed in the arm by the guard, Clementine will patch his wound up for him. Javi asks Clem if Lingard was passed out and attempts to wake him up, after a while Lingard wakes up and tells Javi and Clem that he wants to die if David is being removed from his position. Javi will have a choice; 1. Kill Lingard 2. Don't kill him, or if you do not do anything Clementine will kill Lingard. Javi will soon later meet up with Kate to take one of the armory trucks, then meets up at the Town meeting where he sees David standing on a stool with a rope around his neck. Joan soons starts her speech about David and his group being enemies of Richmond. Joan will soon reveal Ava and Tripp being held captive, and makes Javi choose either Ava or Tripp to live. However, Joan goes back on Javi's decision and kills the person he chose to save. Clint then proposes a deal of taking David and getting out of Richmond. You can accept his deal, or you can shoot Joan in the eye. Either way, a shootout ensues and Kate will come in the truck crashing into a gas tank and the Richmond walls will blow up leading to walkers getting inside.

"From The Gallows"

The Episode starts off in a flashback where David, Javier, and Salvador are playing dominoes. Javi will lose and gets Salavador's wallet, he sees a white piece of paper, David takes it and says he has cancer, Javi will have a choice to tell his father to "Fight It" or "It's your life", which means he won't fight. After the flashback, Javi will be attacked by two guards and will take over, he shoots two walkers and checks the truck to look for Kate, but she is not there. Then he meets up with David and looks to find Kate. David sees a walker that looks like Kate and the walker attacks him. Javi tries to pull the walker back, until Kate comes and stabs the walker. They soon see Clementine and Gabe fighting walkers, they take shelter in a building. David, Gabe, and Clem go check the exits while Kate and Javi go upstairs and see people wounded from the explosion. They go into a room and see Eleanor, Fern, and Rufus (Determinant) if Javi did not kill Rufus in episode 1. Fern will ask Javi if he can saw off Rufus's arm, if you choose to do that Rufus will scream in pain and bleed out and die, then begin to turn. The others come in and see what happened. Fern will take a shot and threatens the group, saying that they killed her little girl and her husband is now dead because of Javi. David will break her arm and head up to the roof, Javi will confront him saying David has found a way to get out of Richmond. Javi can choose to stand on the roof with David or stay back. If he stands with him, it improves their relationship. The others come up, and save Ava or Tripp. (Determinant)

The group will go on their way to the water tower and get a vehicle, they have to cross a car, Javi will fall and Ava saves him (if she is still alive), but before Ava can say anything she gets grabbed by a walker and falls to her death. They soon come across a helicopter and have to cross that, once everyone is across, if you decided to save Tripp he will stay behind and shoot walkers, then a walker grabs him and he falls to his death. They soon reach the water tower where they get a vehicle, Javi and David will then fight over Kate loving Javi more. Javi has a choice to fight or keep his promise to his father, saying to David that he loves him. David yells at him, saying he doesn't get to say it. Gabe attempts to intervene but is accidentally hit by David. Clementine will then either shoot at David or hold him at gunpoint. David then takes Gabe and drives away from the garage. Who Clementine goes after is dependant on past choices and how good Javi's relationship with her is. At this point the player now has a choice that can affect the survival of Kate, David and Gabe:

Stay With Kate to save Richmond:

if you decide to do this, you and Kate will block the hole in the wall and Jesus and his group come back and help get rid of walkers. Clementine returns with Gabe and says David did not make it. If Clementine stays with Kate as well, David will be already dead and Gabe will be dying when they arrive after helping Kate.

Go After Gabe and David:

if you decide to do this choice you and Clem get on a bike and go after them (if Clementine chooses to stay with Kate, Javi will go alone). They/he follow(s) a trail of roadkill and see(s) that walkers are attacking the truck. If you have Clem with you, David and Gabe will both survive and David volunteers to leave the group, if you say "Come Back" David will leave but will come back later. If you say "Just Go" he will not appear again. The group makes it back to Richmond. Then while fighting zombies and looking for Kate, Javi is the first to witness the Zombified Kate. It is presumed Kate bled out from her wound and died since Javi/Clem was not there to help her. Javi can then choose to shoot her or not. If he does shoot her, he falls on his knees and covers his head with his hands as he screams in anguish and sorrow. If he does not, Kate will roam free in the herd of walkers.

Then, in the epilogue, he and Gabe/Kate/David (Determinant) will look at the memorial wall, and see photos of Joan, (Determinant) Clint, (Determinant) Conrad, (Determinant) Ida, Rufus, Tripp, Ava, Badger, Mariana, David (Determinant) Gabe (Determinant), Max (Determinant), Kate (Determinant) and Paul Lingard. (Determinant) Javi may talk to Conrad if he is still alive at the end of the game. Javi meets with Clementine outside and see Dr. Lingard, (Determinant) and he will reluctantly thank them for not killing him and he reveals the location of AJ, at McCarroll Ranch. Then Javi says goodbye to Jesus. Jesus tells him he thinks Javi would make a good leader in Richmond. After Javi gives Clementine a haircut, Clementine will leave Richmond to go find A.J..

He is never seen again after the events of Richmond, but it is confirmed he is still alive.

Trivia

  • In the E3 2016 trailer, Javier had the New Frontier brand on his neck, which indicates that originally he was going to be a member of the group before this was scrapped in favor in introducing his older brother David García.
    • There was an earlier version of the story where Javi was forced to join the New Frontier group and branded (against his will) in order to prove his trustworthiness/earn his place. He escaped, but still needed to retrieve his family (David, Gabe, and Mari) from their NF captors, which aligned his goals with Clementine’s search for AJ.[3]
    • Key art of Season 3 shows that Javier's beard was going to be thicker.[4]
  • Javier is the first character in the Telltale Series to have some kind of a celebrity status.
    • Job Stauffer confirmed that Javier was a professional baseball player.
    • Being a professional baseball player, Javier is one of the few celebrities encountered in The Walking Dead franchise.
    • Javier is one of four professional athletes encountered in the Comic Universe, the other three being Tyreese, Beta, and Spencer-Lee Dryden.
  • Javier, along with Lee, Clementine, Kenny, Lilly and William has killed the most named characters, either as a zombie or as a living person.
    • Javier has the most directly killed victims in Season Three with a minimum of six and maximum of fifteen, depending on player choices, this title can also be shared with Conrad.
  • Javier is one of the eight characters that to appear in all five episodes of Season 3, the others being Clementine, Kate, Gabriel, Eleanor, David, Tripp, (Determinant) and Conrad. (Determinant)
  • Javier is a known drug user, the others in the Telltale Series being Bonnie, Wyatt, Eddie and Kate, though the player can deny when Kate offers it.
  • Despite having played professional baseball in Baltimore, the jersey that Javier wears throughout the game does not at all resemble those worn by Baltimore's only professional baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles; in fact, Javier's jersey more closely resembles that of a Kansas City Royals or Tampa Bay Rays uniform.
  • Javier is one of five characters, alongside with Clementine, Paul, Eleanor, and Fern that are alive at the end of Season 3, regardless of the players' choices
  • Adam Esquenazi Douglas confirmed Javier is bisexual in response to a question about his orientation.[5]
    • Javier is one of twelve LGBT characters to appear in the Telltale Series, the others being Clementine, Matthew, Walter, Zachary, Jonas, Paige, Paul Monroe, Minerva, Violet, James, and Charlie.
    • Javier is also the second LGBT protagonist in the game series, Clementine being the first.
    • Javier is also one of two bisexual characters in the game series so far, the other being Clementine.
  • Javier's stands at 5' 11". This is revealed in an official artwork for Ruby, which used Javier's model as a comparison.
  • Javier and the remaining García's are confirmed to be alive (if they are saved).[6]
    • Javier is the only member of his family that survives no matter what.
  • Javier is one the twelve characters that are confirmed to survive the events of the game series, regardless of the players' choices.
  • If Javier was killed by a walker while trying to save Gabe and Dave, a cut-scene where a dying Javier will ask Gabe to save Clementine and Kate in Richmond without him, much to Gabe's dismay. Regardless, this scene is non canon and will force the player to restart. This is perhaps the only time in Telltale history that a scene and dialogue options actually occur in a non canon death of the playable character.
  • Originally, Javier was about 10 years younger and portrayed by Danny Ramirez (Eric) before he was made older and Jeff Schine was cast.[7]
  • Javier's primary weapons are a small hammer similar to the one that the comic's version of Tyreese used, a crowbar taken from a walker at C&C Auto Stop, an aluminum Baseball Bat provided to him by David and the gun that he took from Rufus.
    • Before arriving at the junkyard, Javier appears to favor the hammer before switching to the crowbar when he gets it from a walker. After losing the crowbar, he finds the hammer outside of the junkyard, presumably where he dropped it when he took the crowbar.
    • After receiving the bat, Javier wears it in a sling across his back and goes as far as to retrieve it from the New Frontier's armory.
    • Javier occasionally uses a knife as well, but he tends to prefer his other melee weapons over it.
  • Javier displays various signs of being a narcissist, and can display some if the player chooses to do so.
    • During a flashback when he plays ball with David, Javier can choose to keep hitting the ball and inflate his own ego while pushing down David's, even though the latter is clearly not up for the banter.
    • According to David and other in-game dialogue Javier completely abandoned his dying father in the promise of his baseball career, something which he regretted but nonetheless chose to do despite the dire situation the family was in.
    • Javier has numerous dialogue options where he can refer to himself as better than the person(s) he's talking to, but this is done in a more joking manner than actually serious.
  • Javier is the only protagonist in the series known to be bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English.
