"Where are you taking them?"
"To Coruscant."
"Coruscant? Uh, that doesn't compute. Uh, wait, uh, you're under arrest!"
―2163 and Qui-Gon Jinn — (audio) Listen (file info)[3]

2163 was an OOM command battle droid that served within the Droid Army of the Trade Federation during its invasion of the planet Naboo in 32 BBY. Following the occupation of the capital Theed, 2163 and the droids under its command were stationed in the Theed Hangar guarding the Naboo Royal Starship and various captive members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces.

When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn entered the hangar with Queen Padmé Amidala and her entourage, 2163 ordered them to halt and then declared that they were under arrest after Jinn stated he was taking the queen to the planet Coruscant. The Jedi then destroyed 2163 with his lightsaber.

2163-Halt-TPM

2163 attempted to stop Qui-Gon Jinn and his allies from leaving Naboo.

2163 was the designation of an OOM command battle droid[3] that was manufactured by Baktoid Combat Automata[2] for use in the Droid Army of the Trade Federation. The battle droid was part of the forces that the Federation deployed during their invasion of the planet Naboo[3] in 32 BBY,[1] and after the invaders occupied the world's capital city, Theed,[3] he[4] was stationed in the Theed Hangar used to store the Naboo Royal Starship.[3]

Various members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces who had been captured during the invasion, including several pilots of the Space Fighter Corps, were held captive in the hangar, where they sat in a group on the floor surrounded by a circle of B1-series battle droids under 2163's command. The unarmed OOM-series battle droid stood with four B1 droids, including units 1933 and 7169, by the ramp leading up into the starship, when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi led Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo and her entourage, including Captain Quarsh Panaka, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, her handmaidens, and several Naboo Palace Guards, into the hangar.[3]

Bisected[]

"Halt!"
"I am ambassador to the Supreme Chancellor. I'm taking these people to Coruscant."

2163-Death-TPM

Qui-Gon Jinn caused enough doubt among the droids to get close to 2163 before bisecting the droid's torso with his lightsaber.

Jinn walked steadily toward[5] 2163[3] and the droids guarding the ship, causing a moment of doubt among them that allowed the Jedi to get into position[5] before the command droid ordered Jinn to halt in front of him. The Jedi explained that he was an ambassador of Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum and that he was taking those with him to the planet Coruscant, but this answer did not compute with the command droid, who ordered that Jinn and the others be placed under arrest.[3]

Before the droids around 2163 could even raise their weapons, the Jedi drew his lightsaber and destroyed the command droid, bisecting its torso and beheading the nearby 1933 in one sweep. Kenobi then freed the nearby captives and the pair destroyed the remaining droids in the hangar before making their escape with Amidala on board the Royal Starship.[3]

Characteristics[]

2163 was an OOM-series battle droid with masculine programming[3] that stood 1.91 meters tall.[2] He had bone-white plating, black sensors, and the yellow patterning shared by other command battle droids, as well as his designation imprinted on his back in Trade Federation Script.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

"Why, you shall take them, then, to Coruscant. Alack, this doth Go 'gainst my programming, doth not compute! Behold, I place you all under arrest."
"Thou shalt a ghost droid be ere I am through."
―2163 and Qui-Gon Jinn's altered dialogue in William Shakespeare's The Phantom of Menace: Star Wars Part the First[6]
PeterSerafinowicz

2163 was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz.

2163 appeared in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[3] which was released on May 4, 1999.[7] The droid's designation was not spoken in the film but was visible on its back.[3] The command battle droid was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, the actor who also dubbed the Sith Lord Darth Maul's voice in the film.[8]

In the film's script, 2163 is identified only as "Guard Droid" and "Droid Guard" and is only given the lines "Where are you going?" and "You're under arrest!". He is also described as drawing his weapon before being destroyed[9] although he is visibly unarmed in the final cut of the film.[3] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, 2163 first appeared in the novelization of The Phantom Menace written by Terry Brooks,[10] which was released prior to the film on April 21, 1999.[7]
