"And Masters Devo and Shonnatrucks are greeting some of the new security forces the Republic has sent for the fair before they head over for the ceremony, which is imminent."
―V-18, to Ram Jomaram[2]

Shonnatrucks was a Valon Jedi Master who served the Jedi Order in the Outer Rim planet Valo's Jedi temple. In 231 BBY, they and other Jedi greeted Galactic Republic security forces prior to the world's Republic Fair. The following year, Shonnatrucks was killed by Nihil marauders during an attack on Valo while attempting to escape to the planet's mountains with the Valo Temple's younglings. In 229 BBY, the surviving Jedi younglingsGavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep—returned to Lonisa City and informed Padawan Ram Jomaram of Shonnatrucks and the other Masters' deaths.

Biography[]

"Go back, stay with the adults, and they'll be able to protect you from the Nihil."
"They won't. They can't. We don't have anyone to return to."
―Ram Jomaram and Gavi, about Shonnatrucks and Valo's other Jedi Masters[3]

V-18 informed Ram Jomaram (pictured) of a breach at Crashpoint Tower after failing to locate Shonnatrucks or other Jedi Masters.

Shonnatrucks was a Jedi Master of the Jedi Order's Valo Temple on[2] the Outer Rim[3] planet Valo during the High Republic Era.[2] In 231 BBY,[4] ahead of the Republic Fair scheduled to be hosted in[2] Valo's capital[3]Lonisa City—they, Master Devo, and several Padawans from Valo's Temple greeted security forces sent by the Galactic Republic for the planet's upcoming festivities.[2]

Not long after, the droid V-18 learned of a perimeter security breach of Valo's Crashpoint Tower communications tower, followed by the planet's comms becoming faulty. After failing to locate or contact any of Valo Temple's Jedi Masters—including Shonnatrucks—the droid instead told Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram of the issues. While conversing with the Padawan, he also mentioned the locations of the rest of the Valon Jedi. Ultimately, Jomaram helped restore the tower's functionality, allowing the Jedi to work with the Republic to repel an invasion by the Nihil marauders.[2]

Following the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station[3] in 230 BBY,[5] Valo's Jedi Masters prepared to leave and head to the Jedi Temple on[3] the Core Worlds planet[5] Coruscant. However, their efforts were stalled when Valo was attacked by the Nihil not long after[3] in the same year.[1] All of the Valo Temple's Masters[3]—including Shonnatrucks[6]—hurriedly attempted to flee into the world's mountains to escape Lonisa City. However, the Nihil killed the Jedi—feeding several of them to a Force-eating Nameless creature—resulting in only the younglings Gavi, Kildo, and Tep Tep surviving. After living in Valo's mountains alone for a year, the three younglings returned to the city and introduced themselves to Jomaram—who had been operating as an anti-Nihil saboteur nicknamed the "Scarlet Skull"—informing him of Shonnatrucks and the other Valo Temple's Jedi Masters' deaths. The Padawan grieved their passing, having hoped the Masters were preparing for a strike against the Nihil.[3]

Powers and abilities[]

As a member of the Jedi Order, Shonnatrucks was a Force-sensitive individual trained to wield the Force.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Shonnatrucks was first mentioned in Race to Crashpoint Tower, a junior novel written by Daniel José Older as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase I that was published on June 29, 2021.[7] Prior to its release, the Jedi's mention was included in a preview for the work printed in the junior novel A Test of Courage,[8] published on January 5 of the same year.[7] On Twitter, Older confirmed that all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters—including Shonnatrucks—perished in the Nihil attack mentioned in The High Republic: Escape from Valo,[6] a 2024 junior novel written by himself and Alyssa Wong as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic's[3] Phase III.[7]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The events of The High Republic: Escape from Valo take place one year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which equates to 229 BBY per Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. The novel establishes that the attack on Valo—in which all of the Valo Temple's Jedi Masters, save for Kunpar Vasivola, died on Valo—took place one year before, meaning Shonnatrucks must have passed away in 230 BBY.

The younglings in the novel and Driggit see many of them perish in the attack on Valo — is it safe to say all of them passed away save for Kunpar, or were there ones that survived and the younglings only assumed they all got dusted?")
