"The Prime is One, but the Jedi are Many."
―Kli the Elder in the Rammahgon[2]

The Prime Jedi was an individual[1] who was active during the Dawn of the Jedi era.[3]

The individual became the first Jedi to ever use the Force.[4] The Prime Jedi was also the founder of the Jedi Order, which they established on the planet Ahch-To[1] around 25,025 BBY.[5] The first Jedi Temple, which was located on Ahch-To, contained a mosaic of the Prime Jedi in a state of meditation and balance.[1]

During the High Republic Era, the Meditation Chamber located on the space station Starlight Beacon also featured a mosaic of the Prime Jedi.[6]

The Prime Jedi was referenced in the Rammahgon by the ancient Jedi Kli the Elder.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Introduction into the Star Wars canon[]

"This is a symbol of the first Jedi, or 'Jedi Prime'. The center, yellowish rocks represent the energy of a lightsaber, splitting off into two directions: the dark and the light side of the Force. The black rocks symbolize the energy of the Force—everything in between, binding our universe together."
―Seth Engstrom describing the mosaic of the Prime Jedi[7]

The Prime Jedi first appeared in a mosaic in the 2017 film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, written and directed by Rian Johnson.[8] They were first identified in Pablo Hidalgo's reference book Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary, which was released on the same day as the film.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the founders of the Jedi Order were Jedi Masters Cala Brin, Garon Jard, Rajivari, and Ters Sendon.[9]

The final design of the Prime Jedi mosaic was completed by concept artist Seth Engstrom in April 2016 after a long process of trial and error. The inspiration for the mosaic came from Taoist iconography of yin and yang, the balance between dualities.[7]

Initial ideas and the Jedi's backstory[]

"When I first talked to Kathy Kennedy about it, I just said, ‘I just see this opening to make kind of a ‘Ben-Hur' or ‘The 10 Commandments' about the birth of the force.' The force has become a kind of religious legend that spans through all these movies. But where did it come from? How is it found? Who found it? Who was the first Jedi? And that's what I'm writing right now."
―James Mangold about his influences, like the Prime Jedi, for his Star Wars movie[10]

The idea of delving into the origins of the Jedi Order harkens back to the initial plans Star Wars creator George Lucas had for the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, according to original trilogy producer Gary Kurtz, back when the Star Wars saga was meant to be comprised of nine films in the early 1970s. However, much to Kurtz's dismay, Lucas changed his mind in 1980 and opted to wrap up the series with the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi before reconsidering his stance years later, but coming up with a different story than the one he originally had for the prequel trilogy.[11]

On February 6, 2018, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were announced by StarWars.com to produce and write a Star Wars film series,[12] which reportedly focused on the time period in which the Jedi came to exist, due to the duo's apparent interest in that untouced era of the Star Wars canon.[13] However, due to their scheduling conflicts with Netflix, Inc., Benioff and Weiss reluctantly walked away from their project on October 28, 2019, though Lucasfilm Ltd. showed a willigness to work with the duo again in the future.[14]

On April 7, 2023, it was confirmed during Celebration Europe that James Mangold would direct an untitled Star Wars film centered on the origins of the Jedi.[15] According to Mangold after his panel, how The Force was discovered and found by the first of the Jedi was one of the things that drew him to the project.[10][15]
