"You did the rounds and double-checked all the side entrances?"
"Absolutely!"
"And the front entrances? And the back entrances? And emergency exits?"
―Vark Tarpalin and Idrax Snat in the mansion, about preparations for the Dark Fair[1]

Acting Regional Commander Vark Tarpalin of the Nihil marauders operated out of an official mansion in Lonisa City on the Outer Rim planet Valo during its occupation by the Nihil. In 229 BBY, Tarpalin and three of his colleagues were in the mansion preparing for the Dark Fair, an event being hosted to commemorate the anniversary of the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station. However, the group left the mansion shortly afterward when the "Scarlet Skull"—secretly the Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaramattacked the landing pads accepting guests for the event.

Description[]

The mansion was located in Lonisa City on the Outer Rim planet Valo.[1] By 229 BBY,[2] the building's balcony offered a clear view of the ruined fairgrounds of the Valo Republic Fair hosted in the city two years before. The mansion had a war room attached to the balcony and featured an ornate stairwell.[1]

History[]

"Get to the landing pads! Find out what the karkbucket just happened!"
―Vark Tarpalin, to his colleagues in the mansion after the attack of the "Scarlet Skull"[1]
Valo

The mansion was located on the planet Valo.

The Nihil Acting Regional Commander Vark Tarpalin operated out of his official mansion while stationed on Valo, following its occupation by Nihil marauders[1] in 230 BBY. In 229 BBY,[2] Tarpalin and his Nihil colleagues—Kimal Tin, Idrax Snat, and Driggit Parse—spent time on the mansion's balcony prior to the start of Valo's Dark Fair, an event hosted to celebrate the anniversary of the destruction of the Starlight Beacon space station. Tarpalin was anxious to impress his Nihil superiors with the event, repeatedly questioning the trio about aspects of their preparations to make sure they were completed. As the commander's nervousness around the event escalated, he heard the band he had forced to participate in the event begin to play their music.[1]

However, the Dark Fair was disrupted by the "Scarlet Skull"—secretly Jedi Padawan Ram Jomaram, operating in disguise—before the event could formally commence, with Jomaram commandeering Tarpalin's speakers to denounce the Nihil. As the commander spluttered in protest, Jomaram began detonating explosives on the nearby landing docks accepting guests for the Dark Fair. Tarpalin and his colleagues rushed down the mansion's stairwell and left the building to investigate.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Vark Tarpalin's mansion appeared in Escape from Valo, a 2024 junior novel written by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[3]
