"We count thirty Rebel ships, Lord Vader, but they're so small they're evading our turbolasers."
"We'll have to destroy them ship to ship. Get the crews to their fighters."
―Lieutenant Tanbris and Darth Vader — (audio) Listen (file info)[1]

Lieutenant Tanbris was a human officer of the Galactic Empire. In 0 BBY, the lieutenant was an aide on board the Death Star battle station and provided a report on enemy numbers to the Sith Lord Darth Vader when the Alliance to Restore the Republic attacked the station. Although Vader ordered Tanbris to have the station's fighter crews prepare to launch, the Death Star was destroyed soon after.

Biography[]

VaderTanbris-ANH

Tanbris reported to Darth Vader on the Death Star.

Tanbris[2] was a human officer of the Galactic Empire[1] that held the rank of lieutenant[2] and served as an aide[3] on the Death Star battle station. After destroying the planet Alderaan[1] in 0 BBY,[4] the Death Star traveled to the Yavin system in order to destroy the headquarters of the Alliance to Restore the Republic located on[1] the moon Yavin 4.[5]

The rebels launched thirty starfighters to combat the Imperial forces. Due to the small size of the vessels, the fighters were able to evade the Empire's turbolasers and make it to the surface of the station. On board the Death Star, Tanbris hurriedly approached the Sith Lord Darth Vader in one of the corridors and informed him of the rebels' numbers and evasiveness. Vader ordered the lieutenant to have the station's fighter crews get to their vehicles so that they could destroy the rebels in fighter-to-fighter combat.[1] Although Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star, refused to issue a launch order, Vader scrambled a single squadron of TIE fightersBlack Squadron—on his own authority.[6] The TIEs soon launched from the station and engaged the rebel fighters, but they were unable to prevent them from destroying the Death Star.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Tanbris had brown hair, light skin, and blue eyes.[1]

Equipment[]

Tanbris wore a black uniform of the Imperial Officer Corps with a matching cap that included a officer's disk. The lieutenant also wore a black and silver utility belt, black boots, two Imperial code cylinders, and a rank insignia plaque with four blue squares.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

In the current Star Wars canon, Tanbris first appeared in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[1] Andy Bradford, who did stunt work on the film,[7] portrayed Tanbris.[8] Bradford's scene was filmed on Stage 2 at Elstree Studios between June 17 and June 28, 1976.[9]

The character's name was then first used in canon in the 2016 activity book Star Wars Origami: 11 Amazing Paper Folding Projects from a Galaxy Far, Far Away.... Spacecraft, which was written by Chris Alexander.[2] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the character appeared prior to the release of the film in its 1976 novelization by Alan Dean Foster.[10] The character's name originated in Legends on a card in the 1995 Premiere Limited set for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game produced by Decipher, Inc.[11]
