"We're losing droids fast."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi after R2-B1 is destroyed — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

R2-B1 was an R-series astromech droid that was stationed in the repair droid pool on the royal starship belonging to Queen Amidala during the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation. After escaping Naboo, the ship carrying Queen Amidala was hit by a Trade Federation battleship and damaged. The astromech droids stored on board were sent out to repair the damage, with R2-B1 being one of the droids destroyed in the attempt. Only R2-D2 survived to restore shield power to the cruiser by bypassing the main power drive, allowing pilot Ric Olié to escape into hyperspace.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

"Gee whillickers! I'm gonna be in a whole heap a' trouble if I don't deliver this message quick! But I just can't find the fella it's meant to go to anywhere in this big ol' city! I know what the fella looks like, and I got the message ready to go on this here data disk… I just need someone with the skills to actually FIND him!"
―R2-B1[5]

In the 2022 non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, R2-B1 appears in an adaptation of its scene in The Phantom Menace during the mission "Transport to Coruscant," where it uses an drill to try and repair the Naboo Royal Starship but ends up spinning around on the end of the drill and being launch off the ship into space. The droid can later be found in two separate locations in Theed where it asks the player in binary to help it deliver a message to a member of the Royal Naboo Security Forces during the mission "Spear We Go Again." Fearing it will get it trouble if it fails to deliver the message quickly, R2-B1 complains that it cannot identify the message's recipient as all organics look alike to it. If the player accepts the mission, R2-B1 will give them the message on a datalog and then display a hologram of the guard it should be delivered too wielding a spear.[5]

In LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, R2-B1 (right) is launched into space while trying to use a drill on the Naboo Royal Starship.

After questioning various civilians, the player finds the guard and delivers the message, which warns him that the spear he is carrying has been reported missing by a Gungan warrior and orders him to return it to avoid a diplomatic incident. The guard agrees to do so, completing the mission and unlocking R2-B1 as a playable character that can be purchsed for 35,000 studs. If spoken to after the mission is completed, R2-B1 admits that astromechs are not the most efficient when it comes to deliveries and directs the player to help its friend on the planet Kamino, R2-N3, starting the mission "Kamino Kommunications."[5]
