"The songs of eons past tell of battles between Mandalore the Great, and an order of sorcerers called Jedi that fought with such powers."
―The Armorer — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

Mandalore the Great was a Mandalorian individual who first[1] held the title of Mand'alor.[2] According to ancient folklore, Mandalore the Great defeated a mythosaur at its lair in the Mines of Mandalore and then tamed the mythical beast.[1] Mandalore the Great was also known for leading a series of conflicts against the Jedi Order.[2] The legends of Mandalore the Great riding the mythosaur caused the mythosaur skull emblem to become one of the traditional symbols of Mandalorian iconography. Prior to the Great Purge of Mandalore, a plaque was erected near the entrance to the living waters of Mandalore below a civic center in the capital city of Sundari in honor of Mandalore the Great and his battle against a mythosaur.[1] By the time of the New Republic, the Jedi[2] and the mythosaur[3] had become a myth, though the battles between Mandalore the Great and the Jedi were known to some Mandalorians through ancient songs.[2] Around 9 ABY,[4] a Mandalorian armorer relayed the tales of Mandalore the Great to Din Djarin upon discovering that the child accompanying him was a Force-sensitive individual.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

Mandalore the Great was first mentioned in Chapter 8 of the 2019 television series The Mandalorian,[2] which aired on December 27, 2019.[5] Mandalore the Great's title is similar to that of Mandalore the Ultimate, who led the Mandalorian Wars in the Star Wars Legends continuity.[6]
