- "I am the Naming policy."
- ―Palpatine[src]
The currently ongoing CT proposal to rename the canon Darth Sidious article back to "Palpatine" has made me think about the impracticality of that entire article-naming situation. In our rationale for naming the canon article "Darth Sidious," we readily admit that "Palpatine" is nonetheless the more common, well-known name for the character, both in-universe and among fans. So we're not serving our readers who are searching "Palpatine" and expecting to find his canon character, only to end up on the Legends article.
Thus, I present the "Palpatine Amendment" to the Naming policy. Currently, the "Canon and Legends" subsection of the Naming policy reads:
- Alternatively, a Legends subject may use as its article title a name that would otherwise be a redirect to its Canon counterpart (example: Palpatine is the title of the Legends article rather than redirecting to Darth Sidious).
Under the Palpatine Amendment, that section will be revised as follows:
- Alternatively, a Legends subject may use as its article title a name that would otherwise be a redirect to its Canon counterpart (example: Lightsaber crystal is the title of the Legends article rather than redirecting to Kyber crystal). One exception to this rule is film characters. Applicable Legends film-character articles shall utilize the /Legends suffix to allow all relevant alternate names and name variations to redirect to their Canon versions (example: Palpatine redirects to Darth Sidious, while Palpatine/Legends is the Legends article title).
This will affect an exceedingly small number of articles. From the Original Trilogy, for example, it's pretty much just Garindan and Khurgee (though we may have missed one or two). The greater purpose here is to make an allowance for Palpatine and any other major film characters we may end up renaming in the future as new stories come out (if Han Solo gets a middle name or something, it would be silly to move the Legends article back to "Han Solo"). And to be clear, since I figure someone is bound to ask, this only applies to Legends film characters who share a name with their Canon counterpart, hence the word "Applicable" in the proposal. Marquand won't be renamed to Marquand/Legends, since Pablo, in his infinite wisdom, renamed the canon character to Newland. Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 21:54, July 28, 2018 (UTC)

- Does that mean we can move Darth Maul's canon article to Maul now? Commander Code-8 Hello There! 07:17, July 29, 2018 (UTC)
- If Darth Maul redirects to Maul, and the Legends page stays where it is, then that satisfies my SEO concerns about moving the page. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 07:30, July 29, 2018 (UTC)

Discussion[]
- Another one like this is Poe Dameron. If you search Poe, it takes you to Poe, rather than Poe Dameron. I feel like this search should redirect you to Poe Dameron because I feel like most people searching Poe will be looking for him not the Legends protocol droid. --Benjay2345 (talk) 20:37, July 29, 2018 (UTC)
- So, if I'm understanding the intent here, when in conflict for film character names (why just film?), a Canon redirect takes precedence over an official Legends name. Will the Canon landing page require {{Rhere}} templates in these cases? - Esjs (Talk to me) 15:23, July 30, 2018 (UTC)
- As I understand it, this only applies to Canon/Legends counterparts of the same character, therefore {{Rhere}} would be redundant to Canon/Legends tabs. 01miki10 Open comlink 15:43, July 30, 2018 (UTC)
