"Get him off of there!"
―Newland, upon spotting an Ewok assailant[1]

Newland,[2] also known as Marquand[3] was a human male in the Galactic Empire.[1] During the Galactic Civil War, he held the rank of major[2] and served at the Battle of Endor[1] in 4 ABY,[4] where he served in Tempest Scout 2, an All Terrain Scout Transport with Lieutenant Blanaid.[2]

Biography[]

During the Battle of Endor, the Wookiee Chewbacca and two Ewoks landed on top of[1] Tempest Scout 2,[5] Newland and Blanaid's All Terrain Scout Transport, with one of the Ewoks appearing before the AT-ST's viewports and teasing the walker drivers within. Upon spotting the assailant, Newland immediately ordered Blanaid to remove the Ewok from their walker. However, when Blanaid peered out of the walker cockpit's top hatch, the lieutenant was pulled out and thrown overboard by the Wookiee Chewbacca. This allowed the Wookiee's Ewok companions to drop into the walker cockpit and beat Newland unconscious to take control of the Imperial machine.[1]

Later in the battle, Han Solo donned Newland's uniform and helmet in a guise to trick the commander of the Death Star's shield generator, Major Hewex into opening the bunker's doors, allowing the Rebels access to the control room.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Newland was played by the director of Return of the Jedi, Richard Marquand.[1] In the Legends continuity, the character was named Marquand, sharing a name with the director,[6] but his name was changed to Newland in the new Star Wars canon.[2] The name Marquand would later be used by Atomic Mass Games, however.[5]
