Naming policy: IU vs. OOU, or "This Hasn't Been Done Yet?"[]
Recently, I discovered a glaring lapse in our Naming policy, a practice that has become so ingrained over the history of this wiki that it's become second nature to us. Something most of us, myself included, have probably just assumed is already included in our policy pages, but it's not.
When an in-universe and a real-world article are competing for the same title, it has become our unquestioned precedent to grant the title to the IU subject, while the OOU subject has to disambiguate. Quick examples include Phasma and Phasma (novel) or Darksaber and Darksaber (novel). So why isn't this practice covered by policy? I can't say, other than it's been overlooked. But it's time to codify this longstanding naming convention.
I therefore propose the following amendment to the Naming policy. This will create the new subsection "In-universe vs. real-world articles" of "General rules" > "Disambiguation," and will slide in before "Disambiguation by continuity":
If an in-universe article and a real-world (or out-of-universe) article compete for the same title, the in-universe subject shall take precedence at all times. The real-world article will then disambiguate according to its media or subject type (examples: Phasma and Phasma (novel); Outbound Flight and Outbound Flight (novel); Blue Shadow Virus and Blue Shadow Virus (episode); David West Reynolds and David West Reynolds (author); Shawn Valdez and Shawn Valdez (real person))
- Redirects to major in-universe articles will point to their corresponding in-universe subjects rather than serve as the real-world article title (examples: Ahsoka redirects to Ahsoka Tano, not Ahsoka (novel); Kenobi redirects to Obi-Wan Kenobi, not Kenobi (novel); Thrawn redirects to Mitth'raw'nuruodo, not Thrawn (novel))
