"It's hard to sneak up on a Jedi, you know, especially in the Temple. If you needed to meditate, you only had to ask me to vacate the contemplation balcony…"
―Lene Kostana, to Dooku — (audio) Listen (file info)[2]

The contemplation balcony was an exterior platform situated halfway up the Temple Spire, the main spire[1] of the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant. The location was used by members of the Jedi Order for solitary meditation and reflection.[2] In 88 BBY,[3] Jedi Master Lene Kostana awaited the return of her convor, Ferana, upon the balcony. Shortly thereafter, Kostana and Jedi Initiate Dooku had an altercation on the balcony as Dooku suspected Kostana was secretly a Sith. Jedi Grand Master Yoda broke up the duel after Dooku became too aggressive and helped the Initiate see that he was incorrect in his accusations toward Kostana.[2]

Dooku later told his sister, Jenza, about the events in a holo-letter.[2] Around 23 BBY,[4] Dooku gave several data disks containing his messages to Jenza to his recently recruited Sith assassinAsajj Ventress—for her investigation into his sister's location, and she listened to the holo-disk that mentioned the contemplation balcony.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The contemplation balcony appeared in a flashback sequence in the audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost, written by Cavan Scott[2] and published on April 30, 2019.[5] The capitalization of the contemplation balcony was confirmed by the audio drama's script release[1] on October 1 of the same year.[5]

  3. Star Wars: Timelines dates Dooku and Sifo-Dyas sneaking into the Bogan Collection to 88 BBY. As the flashback in which Lene Kostana and Dooku meet on the contemplation balcony takes place the same year, their meeting must have occurred in 88 BBY as well.
  4. Dooku: Jedi Lost establishes that Asajj Ventress has recently been recruited by Dooku. Star Wars: Timelines dates Ventress' recruitment by Dooku to 23 BBY, therefore placing the present day events of Dooku: Jedi Lost to around 23 BBY.
