Cane Adiss was a Yuvernian member of the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure's criminal empire. He was present in Jabba's Palace on the planet Tatooine when the Wookiee Chewbacca was taken prisoner there, and also witnessed the capture of Princess Leia Organa after she freed the prisoner Han Solo from carbonite. Adiss then accompanied Jabba on the sail barge Khetanna to witness Solo and his allies executed at the Great Pit of Carkoon, but the prisoners escaped and destroyed the barge.

Biography[]

During the Imperial Era, Cane Adiss was a member of the criminal empire of the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure.[1] In 4 ABY,[4] he[1] spent time in Jabba's Palace on the desert[3] planet[1] Tatooine while the Hutt held the former smuggler Han Solo as a prisoner frozen in carbonite there. Solo's friends eventually launched a mission to rescue him, with Princess Leia Organa and Solo's Wookiee companion Chewbacca arriving at the palace while Organa was disguised[3] as the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh.[1]

After threatening Jabba's court with a thermal detonator during negotiations, Organa claimed the bounty on Chewbacca, and the Wookiee was taken away to the palace's prison by Gamorrean guards, who dragged him past where Adiss was stood in Jabba's throne room. Organa remained in the palace, but Jabba had seen through her deception and set a trap,[3] hiding with his favorite courtiers[5] behind curtains in the throne room around where the frozen Solo was kept. Adiss was among a large group of courtiers who hid on a stairwell leading down into the throne room opposite where Jabba lay in wait, with Adiss in the doorway at the top of the stairs. Later that night, Organa snuck into the throne room and freed Solo, only for Jabba to reveal himself once the carbonite had thawed. As Adiss and the others watched, Solo was taken away to the prisons and Organa was brought to Jabba and enslaved.[3]

The following day, the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker arrived in the palace and confronted Jabba, but was imprisoned with Solo and Chewbacca and sentenced alongside them to death. The prisoners would be fed to the sarlacc that dwelt in the Great Pit of Carkoon, and Adiss was among those who accompanied Jabba to the pit on board the Hutt's luxury sail barge, Khetanna, in order to view the execution. At the pit, Adiss watched with Jabba from the viewing deck; however, the prisoners managed to free themselves and Organa killed Jabba, leaving his courtiers in disary. She and her allies then destroyed the barge and escaped.[3] It was unknown whether Adiss died in the explosion, or not.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Adiss was a member of the Yuvernian species[1] with blue eyes[2] and yellow skin. The shorter of Adiss' heads had lighter brown spots and had a more bulbous head shape. The taller of Adiss' heads had darker brown spots and three protrusions at the back of the head.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The prototype model of Cane Adiss

Cane Adiss appeared in the 1983 Star Wars movie Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[3] He was later identified in 2016 by the mobile app Star Wars: Card Trader.[6] The character was first named in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the "Jabba's Palace Limited" set of the Star Wars Customizable Card Game,[7] released in 1998.[8]

A prototype maquette of the character was created for the film, and differed from the final puppet in that the green-spotted head had a large crest above it rather than protrusions, while the other head had orange rather than brown spots. Constructing the final puppet required scaffolding.[9] Revealed during a panel for Salt Lake Comic-Con, the production name for Cane Adiss was "Cane Heads."[10] The several scenes including the Cane Adiss puppet were filmed on Stage 8 at Elstree Studios, in London, England between January and February of 1982.[11]
