—Geras to Liu Kang, after Liu Kang asks him why he chose not to be the Keeper of Time.

Biography

  • Mortal Kombat 1: "Reconstructed by Liu Kang at the dawn of his New Era, Geras remains eternal and unkillable. He retains the memories of all the innumerable timelines he has watch pass and fade. In this New Era, Geras monitors events to make sure that they are faithful to Liu Kang's vision. When they deviate from their intended path, it is Geras' responsibility to correct them. As threats begin to mount, Geras works tirelessly to defend reality. But to succeed, he must first identify the mastermind behind the plot to destroy Liu Kang's New Era."

Storyline

As a fixed point in time, Geras retains his memories of all the timelines he has experienced. When forging his new timeline, Liu Kang reconstructed Geras, changing him from a bruting enforcer to his new and wise friend. For eons, Geras has respectfully served Liu Kang as the Guardian of The Hourglass, watching over the timeline for Liu Kang so he can fulfill his duty as the Protector of Earthrealm.

Mortal Kombat 1

After creating the timeline, Liu Kang discarded his powers as Keeper of Time, instead reserving himself as Protector of Earthrealm, similar to Raiden's role from previous timelines. Unlike in his previous life, Geras now has control of the Hourglass like Liu Kang, something Kronika did not allow. Geras arrives at the Fire Temple to accompany Liu Kang to notify him of temporal anomalies within the timeline, revealing Shang Tsung is now a powerful sorcerer once again, something Liu Kang had prevented when forging his destiny. Liu Kang decides to investigate, while Geras returns to the Hourglass for more information.

After a series of circumstances, Liu Kang regroups with Geras, having discovered that a new Deadly Alliance has been made by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, an Outworld miner turned sorcerer. Unsure as to how their destinies were altered, Geras reveals that a mysterious woman, had began interacting with the two Outworlders, eventually turning them into the sorcerers they were never meant to be. Questioning if it's Kronika resurrected, Geras reassures it isn't, as Titans are permanently destroyed once they die. Hypothesizing that the mysterious person may be from a different timeline, Geras returns to the Hourglass to further his investigation, while Liu Kang sends his champions to put a halt to Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's plans.

As events transpire and worsen, Geras' investigation reveals that Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's benefactor is not of Liu Kang's timeline, with Geras believing that two timelines are happening concurrently, with the benefactor finding a way to traverse between the two. Desperate to protect the timeline from falling into conflicts like before, Geras accompanies the Fire God to Outworld, where Sindel learns of Shang Tsung, Quan Chi and General Shao's true intentions. There, they are confronted by General Shao and his forces, where he uses the Amulet of Shinnok, a weapon that should not exist, to usurp the Outworld throne, capturing Geras, Tanya, Mileena and Kitana. After a long fight, Geras and the others are freed, while the General and his men are imprisoned.

Geras accompanies Liu Kang, Sindel, as well as the Earthrealm and Outworld champions at Ying Fortress to stop Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. There, they subdue the sorcerers, however their benefactor arrives, revealing to everyone that it was really Shang Tsung from a previous timeline. Accompanied by his own Geras, Raiden and an unknown version of Sindel, this Shang Tsung reveals that he and Liu Kang's battle for the Hourglass fractured time, creating two separate timelines in which the Shaolin Monk and the sorcerer had seized the Hourglass separately. Revealing he is now a Titan like Kronika, Titan Shang Tsung plans to merge the timelines into his and rule it. A fight breaks out between Titan Shang Tsung's forces and Liu Kang's, resulting in the death of Sindel.

After forming an alliance with Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, the sorcerers join forces with Liu Kang and Geras. Shang Tsung then theorizes that if two timelines exist, than others must as well. Geras agrees and states that only a Keeper of Time could use the Hourglass to view other timelines. Disillusioned by this, Liu Kang believes the task impossible, as he relinquished his powers as Keeper, but Geras reveals that he saved the power in the event it was needed again. At the Fire Temple, Liu Kang restores his powers while the champions halt Titan Shang Tsung's forces. At the Hourglass, Liu Kang and Geras use it to bring other Titans to his timeline. Titan Shang Tsung arrives with his forces, coming to the revelation his counterpart had theorized with new forces. He attempts to destroy the Hourglass, but Geras helps Liu Kang reverse the damages. Knowing the dangers ahead, Geras follows Liu Kang and the other Titans to Titan Shang Tsung's timeline to amass forces to counteract his onslaught.

Liu Kang arrives in Titan Shang Tsung's timeline with his Forces of Light to battle Titan Shang Tsung's Forces of Darkness. A battle ensues with kombat and death all around. Titan Shang Tsung summons a Titan version of Quan Chi, thus reforming The Deadly Alliance for the battle at hand. As the battle wages to the top of the Pyramid, a good version of the Deadly Alliance briefly fight the Titan Deadly Alliance before being quickly killed. At the top, the Titans fight Liu Kang and an ally, only to be bested by Liu Kang's ally in kombat. Liu Kang uses his temporal power to erase both Titans, but in doing so, causes the timeline seemingly begins to collapse. Running out of time, Liu Kang sends his ally back to their respective timeline before doing so with himself.

Back in their timeline, Geras returns to his position as the Protector of the Hourglass.

Endings

  • Mortal Kombat 1 (Canonical): "Though the barrier between timelines had been rebuilt, there was no question that they could again be broken. Protecting this timeline would require eternal vigilance, so that it could not fall victim to further outside aggression. But nothing in my countless lifetimes had prepared me for this task. In none of them had multiple timelines ever coexisted. Monitoring them for threats was an entirely novel problem. It would require a novel solution. I discovered that, though the timelines no longer touched, their meeting had left them intertwined. I can now secretly surveil all timelines, keeping watch for potential danger. It pleases me to do this service for the new era. Lord Liu Kang may rest assured that it is secure."
