—Rain to Reiko in Mortal Kombat 1

Biography

  • Mortal Kombat 1: "As a student at Outworld’s exclusive Imperial Academy of Sorcery, Rain amazed his peers with his singular aptitude for water magic. Having honed his craft of water magic into a fierce weapon, he now hopes to learn the realms' darkest and most powerful sorcery."

Storyline

In Liu Kang's New Era, he confiscated Rain's divine lineage in order to humble his new incarnation. Though his real name is Zeffeero, the Outworlder called Rain earned his much-preferred moniker due to his natural prowess in hydromancy.

Mortal Kombat 1

Recognized as a gifted mage from the Imperial Academy of Sorcery, Rain eventually reached the treasured status of High Mage, and was treated like a son by Empress Sindel herself. However, his ambition would be played upon by a superior sorcerer, Shang Tsung, who had infiltrated Sindel's court due to his provision of a Tarkat suppressant for Sindel's daughter Mileena. Realizing how much he still had to learn, Rain began conspiring with Shang Tsung and General Shao behind Sindel's back, in what Rain thought was a simple plot to overthrow the empress and prove himself even better.

Rain is first seen at the tournament banquet when Liu Kang introduces Raiden to him. Later, he is seen alongside Tanya in Shang Tsung's false laboratory, observing Shang Tsung preparing a new serum for Mileena's Tarkat. Their meeting is interrupted by a group of spying Earthrealmers - Kenshi, Johnny Cage and Kung Lao - all of whom misread the situation and believe Shang Tsung's serum to be the cause of Mileena's Tarkat due to witnessing him extract Baraka's marrow earlier. In the skirmish, the vial of serum shatters on the floor, so Rain buys time for Shang Tsung to retrieve a new one by battling Kenshi and his group. However, he is defeated, and Mileena goes rabid, with Kenshi taking a strike to his eyes to save Johnny from her assault. The battle is brought to a halt by the arrival of General Shao, Goro and a group of Outworld soldiers. The Earthrealmers are sent to Shang Tsung's real laboratory to be killed, while Kitana orders Rain and Tanya to help the unconscious Mileena, who had received the serum.

Much later in the story, Rain appears at the ruined Ying Fortress during Scorpion and Sub-Zero's attempted infiltration, observing a smelting pot of what appears to be gold alongside Quan Chi, who instructs him on the importance of pure gold for an unspecified purpose. They are unknowingly passed from behind by Scorpion, who had just escaped a battle with his traitorous brother, General Shao, Shang Tsung and their guards. Rain manages to spot Scorpion's moving reflection from a mirror and counter-ambushes him with a blast of water. Rain then fights him alongside Quan Chi, but Scorpion beat them both in kombat and flees the fortress.

Rain joins General Shao, Nitara, Goro and the rest of Shao's rebellion forces in a confrontation with Liu Kang and Sindel's party in Shang Tsung's real laboratory. He fights Liu Kang, but is kicked away by Sindel in a surprise attack. Rain manages to recover and gives chase into the false laboratory above, confronting Sindel himself. Sindel tells Rain that his betrayal hurts her the most, considering she treated him like her own son, but Rain claims he's outgrown her and that Shang Tsung opened his eyes to the real depths of his potential. Still, Sindel manages to defeat him and declares Rain dead to her for his treason.

The current Rain is not seen again in the main story afterwards, but various versions and amalgamations of Rain are seen during the second Battle of Armageddon, including one allied with Titan Shang Tsung, an amalgamation with Kenshi called Sento Storm, and many more. Additionally, a heroic version of Rain who is a son of Argus like his incarnations from previous games can be selected as the final warrior who aids Liu Kang in defeating the Titans Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, before being sent back to his respective timeline.

Following the failed rebellion, Rain fled to Orderrealm to evade capture, where he joined Havik's crusade against the Seidan government. Rain managed to summon a wave so massive it drowned and destroyed the entire capital. Though Havik had now achieved his long-desired for anarchy, Rain was left a broken man, weeping for his blind ambition leading to his betrayal of Outworld and the thousands of lives he had drowned. Rain no sooner turned himself in to Outworld's forces, awaiting punishment for his crimes and seeking only for forgiveness.

Endings

  • Mortal Kombat 1 (Canonical): "To elude capture by Empress Mileena, I joined Havik's crusade in Seido. There I summoned more magic than I thought possible and drowned out the old regime. Havik's longed-for anarchy had been achieved. He was more than satisfied. But I was left empty and broken. Had I been satisfied as Outworld's High Mage, not let myself be tempted by Shang Tsung, a great city would now not lay in ruins. I've caused devastation, ended thousands of lives. All because of my blind ambition. I've betrayed my oath, my sovereign, and my realm. These high crimes merit punishment. And I'll accept whatever the Empress gives me. My only ambition now is to one day be forgiven."
