It's Vertacine mating season!

Vertacines are a large flying superspecies created by Legendary Pictures that first appeared in the 2024 film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Name[]

The creatures' name is revealed by Trapper as he explains their behavior to Bernie Hayes. Vertacine is a portmanteau of the Latin word "Verta" and the suffix "Cine".

Design[]

Appearance[]

Vertacines are large, multi-winged creatures with robust, flamingo beak-like jaws filled with sharp teeth. They possess black and yellow stripes throughout their bodies. They also sport a large, shark-like fin on their backs.

Roar[]

Vertacines produce warbling bird-like bellows.

Personality[]

Vertacines, typically docile creatures, exhibit a gregarious nature as they gather in flocks and display a remarkable tolerance for human presence, even allowing humans to fly alongside them in jets that can adapt their color to match the pilots' skin tone. When faced with threats, Vertacines employ a defense mechanism by emitting bio-electricity, effectively deterring potential predators. Additionally, they utilize their bio-electricity as a means of attracting suitable mates during their breeding seasons.

History[]

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire[]

A flock of Vertacines fly alongside the Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicle that Jia, Ilene Andrews, Bernie Hayes, and Trapper are in upon entering the Hollow Earth. Trapper activates a biomimicry camouflage to make the HEAV resemble a Vertacine so the creatures will not electrocute the vehicle out of agitation.

Later on, Trapper uses the HEAV to lead a flock of Vertacines to distract the Skar King and Shimo from invading the surface world. The Skar King and Shimo fight the Vertacines off before Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra arrive.

Abilities[]

Bio-electricity generation[]

Vertacines have the capacity to emit bio-electricity, which serves the dual purpose of deterring predators and attracting potential mates.

Flight[]

Vertacines possess four wings that allow them to fly, a prominent upper pair and a smaller pair located just above their legs.
