I'm a bit late to the discussion on IGN Entertainment's acquisition of the Gamer Network. Seeing IGN Entertainment acquire the Gamer Network hits close to home for me. I grew up getting my gaming news and guides from mid-level publishers like Eurogamer and VG247. This consolidation trend is troubling, especially considering the layoffs and reduced editorial diversity that often follow. With my experience at ReedPOP, a subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions, I have insider knowledge of the dynamics at play. Reed should have invested more in these publishers because they didn't fit into the broader B2B portfolio strategy. Recap of Consensus 2024: why does this event exist? TLDR Thx for the BBQ, Austin! And it was great to meet up with old and new friends including EJ Ayala, Michael Dershewitz, Max Kaufman ⚡️, Erica Hamilton, Ron Cao, Colleen Sullivan, Alex M., Paul Thind, Dante Reminick, Parker Heath, Kiernan Fitzsimons, Conrad Sain, George V., Rodrigo Etcheto, Kelly DiGregorio, and more! In all it was a great time meeting with incredible partners. It's clear that: - Cloud compute and distributed hosting x web3 gaming has a lot of potential - Gaming-focused chains are ready to rock and roll, esp. powered by Sequence - Investments are increasingly sophisticated and focused on sustainability - Traditional gaming is headed into the space in droves, with strong teams with incredible backgrounds who truly understand gamers, data, A/B testing and more But Consensus, as with many generalist crypto or web3 events, is obsolete. Events in new industries are important, but as the space matures and consolidates, I'm not sure that there's a need for several days devoted to basic underlying technology. It's like going to Servers 2024! We all get it, we know what servers are, what they do. How this gets applied, what benefits it brings to developers, players, users, that's what matters. I'd love to see Consensus get a bit more serious around specific tracks or reconsider its focus.

‘Fallout’ is the first show from Amazon Prime to Score No. 1 on Nielsen streaming ratings 3 weeks in a row. In its third week on Prime Video since its April 10 release, "Fallout" accumulated 1.53 billion viewing minutes across its eight episodes. The video game adaptation saw 2.9 billion minutes viewed in its first five days and 2.62 billion minutes viewed the following week, from April 15 to 21. "Fallout" was one of only three titles this week to surpass 1 billion minutes viewed. It was followed by "Bluey," which ranked second with 1.34 billion minutes on Disney+, and "Grey's Anatomy," in third place with 1.181 billion minutes viewed on Netflix and Hulu.

Burns people out, no watercooler moments, no cultural staying power "What's the best way to experience the major water-cooler shows commonly considered to be "appointment viewing"? Is the binge model popularized by Netflix the way to approach things, in which viewers are able to spend a whole weekend devouring every episode of an entire season all in one go? Or is it better to exercise a little patience and release episodes one at a time in weekly installments, allowing word-of-mouth momentum to build while keeping the entire production at the center of the cultural conversation for much, much longer? (Or, perhaps, we can have the best of both worlds through "Hacks.")

The Red Dead IP turns 20 years old. Development for Red Dead Revolver began in 2000 as a collaboration between Capcom and Angel Studios, previously known for their Nintendo 64 port of Resident Evil 2. The game initially focused on a SWAT team concept, but the setting soon shifted to the Wild West, a largely untapped genre at the time. Rockstar Games would go on to acquire the rights and tasking Rockstar San Diego, the successor to Angel Studios after its acquisition by Take-Two Interactive, with completing it. Despite having only nine months to rework the game, Rockstar San Diego transformed it into a more traditional Western experience. Red Dead Revolver's success set the stage for the Red Dead series, leading to the development of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption in 2010. Transmedia is the new media. Knuckles became the most-watched Paramount+ original series of all time, with over 4 million hours streamed during its premiere weekend. This comes right after Amazon announced that its Fallout series has been watched by more than 65 million viewers worldwide. The success of both shows underscores the the strategic shift where a story/world is told across multiple platforms, tapping into new audiences and enhancing brand presence. As reported by VGC today, "Square Enix is set to make an unconfirmed number of layoffs as part of its ongoing company restructuring... According to people who were in attendance, Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu said that both the company’s American and European arms would be hit with layoffs, which will happen over the course of the next month. The scale of the layoffs wasn’t shared, but staff were told that people working in publishing, IT, and Square Enix’s Collective indie games division would be predominantly affected. Those affected will be informed this week, staff were told. In the UK, employees will enter into a one-month consultancy period, as per local employment law, while US-based staff could leave their roles before June.
