Learning to hire has been the hardest part of growing Sagapixel. Here are 4 lessons I learned about hiring that are going to carry us into this next phase of the company in 2024.

Today is a day to celebrate. Last week Harsh and Aveline represented Hathora at Develop:Brighton. All reports thus far have been fantastically positive. With a packed spot at our #BackendServicesHouse (always a pleasure to collab with Pragma, Rocket Science Group, Modulate, and i3D.net) and just super high-quality conversations all around. There was a true air of professionalism and deep interest in growing the gaming industry pie 🥧, something we’re deeply optimistic about. One interesting trend we noticed was the rise and influence of the co-dev shops. The gaming industry’s turbulence could be attributed up to “over-hiring.” The experience and expertise we’ve seen from the many co-devs we collaborate with makes this development a no-brainer to me. Championing your cause within an organization comes down to 2 things: 1️⃣ Identifying like-minded personnel who share your vision 2️⃣ Building a community that’s invested in seeing it succeed I have a small internal D&D group at Expium that plays new games to help me work out the kinks and provide valuable input before I take them company-wide. But this team is more than test players. We’ve started meeting to talk about the company's D&D program in general. I share my vision and ideas, and we discuss ways it could be implemented. What’s cool is they know other people within the company who hold similar visions and have made introductions. So now we can couple our communities and initiatives to amplify our positive impact within the company. This approach isn’t limited to spreading ttrpgs for corporate team building. You can apply it to ttrpgs within other organizations, like ttrpgs for educational purposes or therapeutic gaming. 💡 The key is creating a team you trust and giving them a stake in your cause because that’s what’ll make them feel invested and committed to the success of your vision. Sure, devs have a sertain responsibility to players. We ask for a monetary reward for a level-of-awesomeness/longitude of the experience different to everyday life. What we rarely talk about is the responsibility of studio leads before the team. People are pouring souls into work they do, investing time and effort into their zones of responsibilities. PL should make sure, the project they work on is really good. Shouldn't oversell, push weird design decisions and force crunches. One thing is to crunch. Other thing is to crunch for a project that won't make you proud. That is how the industry looses people with great expertise. Project scoping is a very hard skill sure, but that is in the job description. Specifically for people who worked on Starfield. You did an amazing job. Many areas of the game just breath-taking. I am sure in the circumstances you were not many would achieve better results. #projectscop #mvp #gamedesign #projectlead #burnout #crunch

In the past couple years, tens of thousands of talented game devs, who had no hand in the decisions that led to their studios' financial situations, were laid off. This has left them scrambling to find a foothold in a dumpster fire of a job market. You know who isn't desperately trying to find enough income to support their family, manage healthcare, and imagine a possible future in this industry? Every exec who did have responsibility for the financial realities, including: Matt Booty, Microsoft Sarah Bond, Microsoft Jeff Strain, Prytania Media Annie Strain, Prytania Media Strauss Zelnick, Take Two Shuji Utsumi, Sega America How many devs have to have their existing careers derailed and futures put at risk before an executive gets laid off (without severance)? What's the acceptable ratio?
