This is a huge piece of news for the gaming industry as the $68.7bn deal is now finalised, but why?
Exclusivity of games drives sales and we have seen this very recently with a 46% increase in Xbox Series X sales following the Starfield launch. Microsoft can now prioritise their platform for some of the biggest games launches in the industry. Not to mention they can pad out their Game Pass offering (can think of it kind of like a system locked Netflix if never heard of it) with previous landmark games too.
Crucially this deal also gives them a foothold in the mobile gaming market. Call of Duty mobile and Candy Crush are both huge players in this area, and now they come under the Microsoft umbrella.
Microsoft have framed it like they don't want to freeze out Playstation from future releases and Call of Duty has at least a few more years on there. "Whether you play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, PC or mobile, you are welcome here – and will remain welcome". Will be interesting to see how this plays out in the future and how consumers will react.
