From 6 founding countries, to 27 member states! This year, we celebrate 20 years since the great EU enlargement of 2004, when our European family grew bigger with 🇨🇾 Cyprus, 🇨🇿 Czechia, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, and 🇸🇮 Slovenia joining our Union. Since then, the pace of change across the Union has been remarkable, offering tremendous opportunities to people and businesses alike, such as: 🌍 450 million Europeans now enjoy freedom of movement 📈 The EU economy has grown by 27%, fostering prosperity across nations 💼 26 million new jobs have been created, with 6 million in the 10 new EU countries 🌐 Global international trade expanded by €3 trillion since 2004, reaching €5 trillion in 2023. 🚅 Motorway lengths tripled in Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia in the last two decades. 🚀 Over 2.7 million young people participated in the Erasmus+ programme from the 10 new EU countries. 🌱 Energy efficiency has improved by almost 33%, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Can you guess where this incredible structure is? 🤔 It's in Brussels! You're looking at the Atomium, a landmark monument originally built for the 1958 World's Fair, or Expo 58. In 2006, Belgium minted 5 million €2 commemorative coins featuring its image! Fascinating, isn’t it? Today there are almost 150 billion euro coins in circulation and many of the €2 coins have special designs to commemorate important events, people or landmarks – just like the Atomium! 🎉 This year, the euro celebrates its 25th anniversary! Since its introduction, it has become the shared currency of 20 EU countries, serving over 340 million people within the European Union. 🔗 Learn more about euro coin designs on the ECB website: https://lnkd.in/efjTkst4 📸 Atomium in Brussels ©️ Source: NBB Museum / ECB / Photographer: Lieselot Van Peteghem #EUROat25

🚀 The European space industry has just launched into a new era. Last night, Europe's new heavy-lift rocket, #Ariane6, made its inaugural flight from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Just one hour after liftoff, the first set of onboard satellites were released from the upper stage and placed into an orbit 600 km above Earth. The latest in Europe’s Ariane rocket series, Ariane 6 can launch both heavy and light payloads to a wide range of orbits for applications such as Earth observation, telecommunication, meteorology, science and navigation. It is a key step towards a secure and autonomous European access to space. Congratulations to the teams at European Space Agency - ESA, CNES and ARIANESPACE on this success! 📷© ESA #EuropeanUnion #EUSpace

Phones are a lifeline in war-torn Ukraine. 🇺🇦 🇪🇺 Affordable calls allow those seeking shelter in the EU to reach family and friends in Ukraine, and vice versa. ✅ We welcome the twelve-month roaming extension for affordable calls between the EU and Ukraine. ✅ We facilitated the agreement between 22 European and seven Ukrainian telecommunications operators that will ensure that refugees from Ukraine can stay connected across borders. We look forward to soon welcoming Ukraine to the EU Roaming area. We stand by the people of Ukraine. Learn more: https://europa.eu/!HGjNdx #StandWithUkraine #EUSolidarity

Suntem alături de prietenii noștri moldoveni în calea lor europeană. We stand with our Moldovan friends and their European path. This week: 📌 We provided €50 million under the Macro-Financial Assistance to the country, to which we will add €22.5 million in grants by the end of July. With this disbursement, Moldova will be able to cover some of its immediate financing needs and keep the pace with the reforms. 📌 Moldova also signed the Joint Procurement Agreement in the area of health, joining forces with the EU and other participating countries in case of a serious health threat. Starting now, the country will benefit from the EU Member States' and participating countries' combined purchasing power to buy essential supplies, such as medicines and medical equipment, in a health emergency. Together, we are stronger. Learn more here: https://europa.eu/!HyCcdD and here: https://europa.eu/!jhC44k #EuropeanUnion

Do you recognise this stunning island located in the EU? 👇 A little hint: It’s part of an archipelago with five main islands in the Mediterranean. A natural wonder that we need to preserve. Roughly 8 million tonnes of plastics go yearly into the sea, a large amount of which is fishing gear. Much of it is made of modern plastics that can last up to 600 years in the ocean, capturing and killing marine life. By 2030 ➡️ the EU is expected to reduce the plastic waste in our oceans by 50% and microplastics by 30% thanks to our Zero Pollution Action Plan. Where is the EU? Probably on the train you are riding, while reading this post. 🚉 Our #CohesionPolicy has been the bonding agent to help reduce the social and economic disparities in our Union – making it stronger and fairer for every citizen. Among others, it has supported building transport infrastructure in urban areas, home to over two-thirds of the EU's population. For example, it helped build the: 🇮🇹 metro line 1 and 6 in Naples 🇬🇷 expansion of Athens Metro Line 3 to Piraeus 🇷🇴 extension of Bucharest metro 🇵🇱 metro line 2 in Warsaw Discover more projects supported in your country by using our interactive map ➡️ https://europa.eu/!F3MDfV 📷 AdobeStock 1 Toledo metro station interior in Naples by Savvapanf Photo © 2 Piraeus Metro Station Platform Greece by markobe 3 Otopeni, airport train station by Agata Kadar 4 Warsaw, Rondo Daszynskiego metro subway station by wierzchu92 EU Funds #EuropeanUnion #EUfunded
