Cluster II is a space mission of the European Space Agency - ESA to study the Earth's magnetosphere over the course of nearly two solar cycles. The mission is composed of four identical spacecraft flying in formation. As a replacement for the original Cluster spacecraft which were lost in a launch failure of #Ariane5 in 1996, the four Cluster II spacecraft were successfully launched in pairs in July and August 2000 onboard two Soyuz-Fregat rockets. Btw, they don't just look like a drum pad - the 4 satellites are actually called SAMBA, SALSA, RUMBA and TANGO 💃 What I really like about this mission is the creativity and ingenuity that is needed to operate the satellites for more than 20 years. 💡 Just one example: On of the most critical times of a mission are the seasons when the orbit crosses the shadow of the Earth and thus the satellites enter an eclipse. Years ago, the batteries, which were designed to last for a much shorter mission, have all failed (or exploded💥). This has forced the Flight Control Team at ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety to develop a new strategy to completely power off the satellite before entering an eclipse and switch it back on after exiting back into sunlight. To survive the cold, they also pre-heat the whole satellite while still in sunlight before they entering the shadow of the earth to survive the freezing cold. 🥶 The satellites are booted up each time this happens just as when they first entered orbit after launch and a lot of configuration work is required to achieve an operational mode to restart science observations until the next eclipse - all this is automated in ground systems these days. ISRO’s #AdityaL1 launched & AOS established successfully by ESA’s Kourou ground station 🚀📡✅ This morning, ESA’s Kourou #GroundStation established acquisition of signal about an hour after the launch at 8:20 CEST. 👏 Huge congratulations to everyone who played a part in Aditya-L1’s successful launch! 👏 For the next two years, #Estrack deep space antennas from ESA will track and communicate with the Indian Aditya-L1 solar observatory, from the current launch-and-early-orbit phase to the end of the mission. The telemetry, commands and scientific data are relayed through #ESOC, ESA’s #SpaceOperations centre in Germany, and transferred to ISRO’s #MissionControl. The smooth start of the Aditya-L1 mission is a testament to the combined efforts of ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization, European Space Agency - ESA, Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd and other stakeholders involved in this important solar mission to learn more about our dynamic Sun and the space weather it causes. #ESAsupport Aside from space communication support, #FlightDynamics experts at ESOC also contributed to the mission with their extensive expertise for precise orbit determination, enabling effective communication and instrument calibration. 📜 New space debris bill signed by US senate 📜 The US Senate has (unanimously) signed the so-called Orbital Sustainability (ORBITS) act. With this bill, the US Senate has the following objectives in mind: ♻ Publishing a list of debris that poses the greatest risk to orbiting spacecraft ♻ Accelerate the development of required technologies. A NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration program would be established to demonstrate the removal of debris from orbit (curious to learn what kind of technologies they will use) ♻ Encourage consistent orbital debris regulations. A multi-agency update to existing orbital debris standards ♻ Encourage the development of practices for coordinating space traffic which help to avoid collisions that create debris The USA has an exemplary function to fulfil in aerospace as currently the majority of all satellites belong to American companies (SpaceX, Amazon). European Space Agency - ESA recently launched the great initiative ‘debris net zero by 2030’. Today marks the culmination of years of dedication from our #SpaceEnablers : the inaugural launch of #Ariane6.🚀 The first flight, in a two-booster configuration, will consist of three phases, each demonstrating different capabilities of #Europe’s newest heavy-lift launcher. In the first phase of the flight, Ariane 6 will launch into space, separate its main stage from the upper stage, and initiate the first boost of the upper stage’s Vinci engine, placing it and its payloads into an elliptical orbit between 300 km and 700 km above Earth. In the next phase, the upper stage’s Vinci engine will re-ignite, transitioning Ariane 6 from an elliptical to a circular orbit 580 km above Earth and testing the launcher’s re-ignition capability. The final phase will push the cryogenic upper stage to its limits and validate its ability to perform under microgravity conditions, culminating in a controlled de-orbit over the ‘NEMO point’ in the South Pacific. This is a key feature designed to prevent the upper stage from becoming space debris.
