🪨 An abandoned quarry reborn as a natural theatre 🎭 🎤   Meet the Tones Teatro Natura, a visionary project by the Tones on the Stones Foundation that transformed an abandoned quarry at the foot of the Alps ⛰️ into a unique theatre surrounded by woods, pastures, and mountain gardens. This innovative project turned a potential landfill into a vibrant venue for performing arts, well-being, and education.   Located in the Ossola Valley 🇮🇹, the project addresses the challenge of abandoned quarries, bringing cultural, social, and economic growth to an area at risk of losing its heritage and young population. By blending Art and Nature, the theatre offers distinctive experiences that foster both environmental and cultural enrichment.   An applicant of the 2024 New European Bauhaus Prizes, the Tones Teatro Natura is a unique case in Italy: it was established within just three years through a participatory process involving local and national companies, authorities, and foundations. 🚍 An iconic bus makes its comeback! ✨   The beloved Maltese buses, cherished symbols of the 🇲🇹 community, are making a vibrant comeback in a new, eco-friendly form. Retired in 2011 due to environmental and accessibility concerns, these colourful diesel buses are being revived under the Malta Bus Reborn project.   The Maltese bus fleet 🚍, celebrated for its eclectic design, bold colours, and vivid murals, was a defining characteristic of the Mediterranean island. Today, Mizzi Studio, a design studio based in London and Malta, offers a contemporary alternative that blends zero-emissions technology with the visual charm of the originals.   Reviving this national treasure offers a unique chance to connect communities through an environmental heritage initiative. It exemplifies how sustainable practices and community collaboration can transform urban areas into vibrant, inclusive spaces that benefit both people and the environment. 🌱   The project has not only garnered immense public support - with 86% of the community voting in favour of the initiative - but was also a finalist for the 🇪🇺 2024 NEB Prizes. ♻️ This project turns waste into vibrant community spaces ✨ The Re-Sourcing Commons project by Social Design Vienna reimagines urban design through sustainability and community engagement, revitalising a public park in Vienna 🇦🇹. Located in a social housing area with diverse age groups, the park lacked appealing social spaces. Through a participatory process, the community expressed a need for a welcoming, multifunctional space. The redesign embraced circular economy principles, repurposing existing materials and municipal waste to create unique urban furniture like exchange shelves, bike repair stations, and Hollywood swings. This innovative approach not only transformed the park into a vibrant social hub but also demonstrated how cities can creatively reuse discarded materials. The project highlights the power of community collaboration 🤝 in fostering social cohesion and offers a model for sustainable urban development that other cities can emulate. Let us introduce to you the Neringa Forest Architecture project, which made it as a finalist for the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2024 in the Reconnecting with Nature category.   Neringa Forest Architecture seeks to enhance how society negotiates and understands long-term forest sustainability 🌲🌳. The Lithuanian 🇱🇹 project explores the balance between forest use and biodiversity through research and cultural collaboration.   Timber from the Curonian Spit forest, typically shredded for biofuel, was repurposed to build the Natural Timber Seasoning Shed, an archive of wood supporting the artistic and research residency programme in the town of Nida.   Moreover, over three years, the project collected timber to construct The Children’s Forest Pavilion, an educational playscape that acknowledges children’s unique perspectives and observations of the forest, emphasising our connection to it.   What are your thoughts on using cultural and architectural practices to enhance forest sustainability?
