Beneath the waves lies a world teeming with life, where coral reefs flourish in vibrant color and intricate patterns. But this breathtaking beauty is under threat, not just from the warming seas but from the suffocating grip of plastic pollution. 🌊 Each piece of plastic that enters our oceans could end up choking these fragile ecosystems, disrupting marine life, and accelerating the bleaching events driven by global warming. 🪸 According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), microplastics have been shown to stunt coral growth and prevent them from catching actual prey, either by making the coral feel "full" or by decreasing the amount of energy they have that's needed to catch their food.  As these scientists continue to study and gather research, it's becoming more clear that no marine creature is safe from plastic.  Let's give our reefs a fighting chance. 🌍Today is World Environment Day! Established by the UN in 1972, it is celebrated every June 5th to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. This date marks the beginning of the Stockholm Conference, crucial for the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Over the years, we have made significant progress: the 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C.🌡️ However, the challenges remain immense. In 2022, global CO2 emissions reached a record high of 36.8 billion tonnes.🚨 The theme for 2024 is "Solutions to Plastic Pollution".🧴 Each year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans, endangering marine life and our health. It's time to take concrete action: recycle, reduce single-use plastics, and support sustainable policies. Each of us can make a difference. World Environment Day 🌲🌏 Earth is what we all have in common, said Wendell Berry. However, to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be halved by 2030. Plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems is projected to nearly triple by 2040. Urgent action is needed to address these critical environmental issues. Such a call for action is given by World Environment Day. World Environmental Day has been held annually on the fifth of June since 1973 and is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The day focuses on uniting. millions of earth protectors working on protecting and restoring the earth globally. This day highlights the critical environmental issues that question the earth's existence at the time of celebration. It is the largest global platform for environmental outreach.2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. This year, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the event under the theme “Our Land. OurFuture. #GenerationRestoration”. It will focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. We, mere human beings, cannot reverse the past, but we have the power to grow forests, restore water sources, and rejuvenate soils. Our generation has the opportunity to heal and harmonize with the land.
