The bounty hunter Asajj Ventress acquired a yellow-bladed lightsaber on the black market some time after Padawan Barriss Offee stole the lightsabers that Ventress had used as the apprentice of Count Dooku.[1] She viewed getting a new lightsaber as a way to distance herself from what had been her last physical link to her time as his apprentice. Ventress used the weapon for the rest of her bounty hunting career. Her lightsaber was laid to rest with her on Dathomir[3] after her apparent death on Christophsis.[1]
It had a standard cylindrical-shaped hilt and emitted a yellow-colored plasma blade.[1] During the Imperial Era, Ventress used a yellow lightsaber with a curved hilt.[4]
Design[]
Ventress's personal lightsaber produced a yellow blade from a standard, cylindrical-shaped hilt. The power cell was located at the bottom of the lightsaber, under the ridged grip. The ignition trigger was located right over the grill hilt, which covered the rest of the hilt up to the blade emitter.[3]
Holding a fascinating design, the bottom of the lightsaber was a traditional, ridged grip and fully closed off section, which kept the power cell safe. Meanwhile, around three fifths of the hilt was made up by an upper section that was crafted from perforated metal, which left the inner workings of the blade exposed. Nevertheless, the design did not appear to make the weapon vulnerable to moisture damage. In effect, the glowing center of the lightsaber appeared as if it was simultaneously vulnerable and safe, remaining a powerful weapon. As such, the lightsaber reflected much of Ventress' own mental state.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
Ventress's lightsaber was designed by Will Nichols for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series. It was scheduled to appear in eight episodes starring Ventress and Quinlan Vos. The show was canceled, however, before the episodes were finished and the story was instead adapted into the novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. Nichols posted the concept design of the lightsaber in his portfolio in 2016.[5]
The lightsaber's concept design[5] was later used in the revived Season 7 of The Clone Wars, being used as half of Maul's lightsaber.[6]
