"I am your commander. I was a Nihil Cloud in charge of a group of Strikes before I took over this miserable planet. I don't want your opinions, little girl. I want you to shut up and obey my orders."
―Vark Tarpalin, to Driggit Parse[1]

The Nihil Cloud Vark Tarpalin led a group of several Nihil—Strikes—during the High Republic Era, developing a reputation among his colleagues as a ruthless marauder. Following the Nihil marauders' occupation of the Outer Rim planet Valo[1] in 230 BBY,[2] Tarpalin was instead assigned to manage Valo as its Acting Regional Commander. Several Nihil began to regard Tarpalin as a useless bureaucrat for taking the relatively peaceful assignment, blunting his pride.[1]

Hoping to salvage his reputation as a fierce commander, Tarpalin organized a celebratory Dark Fair on Valo[1] in 229 BBY[2] to commemorate the year anniversary of the Starlight Beacon space station's destruction, though the event was sabotaged before it could commence. Not long afterward, when the Nihil recruit Driggit Parse questioned the validity of one of Tarpalin's decisions, he sharply expressed that he did not care about her opinion and his past as a Nihil Cloud leading a group of Strikes before coming to Valo.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The group was mentioned in Escape from Valo, a 2024 junior novel written by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[3]

  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 The events of The High Republic: Escape from Valo take place one year after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which equates to 229 BBY per Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. The novel establishes that the occupation of Valo began a year prior to its events, placing its start in 230 BBY. As Vark Tarpalin left the group upon the occupation's start to serve as Valo's Acting Regional Commander, the group must have fragmented by 230 BBY.
