"It started in a public house on the planet Dantooine."
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

A public house was located in the oldest settlement on the planet Dantooine. It was equipped with tables and lamps and had neon signs. The Evereni pirate leader Marda Ro visited it around 381 BBY in search of other members of her species. She noticed a human and, recognizing him as someone familiar with the Evereni, questioned him about where to find them. The human revealed to her that he had seen a pair of Evereni on a station orbiting the moon Pantora around a year prior. Ro later talked about the public house in a message she recorded for her descendants, which her great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to by 252 BBY.

Description[]

"A generator perched on the leaning roof kept the table lamps flickering inside, and competing neon signs colored the haze of synth-smoke an ugly brown."
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The public house was located in the oldest settlement on[1] the Outer Rim Territories[2] planet Dantooine. It contained tables that had lamps powered by a generator on the building's roof; however, it remained dim inside. The building also had neon signs that colored the synth-smoke in the air brown.[1]

History[]

"I was there to be noticed […] I chose a table with space for more than me and sat facing the room. As I gestured for service, I let my cowl fall back so my face—my ears, my skin, my eyes, my teeth—could be seen."
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The Evereni Marda Ro, who visited the public house during her hunt for other Evereni

Around 381 BBY,[3] Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[4]—visited the public house during[1] her[5] quest for other members of her species. In the public house, Ro ordered a bowl of tea and a mug of a local beer, drinking the tea and leaving the beer at the table as an invitation for others. While Ro sat at the table, she received stares from others and was confronted by a Devaronian, to which she retaliated by tossing the beer into the Devaronian's face. While passing by Ro, the Twi'lek Fori Nagor noticed the Evereni, which made her stop for a moment before she moved on.[1]

Ro eventually noticed a human on the other side of the room, who kept glancing at her during his conversation with his Rodian companion. Recognizing him as someone familiar with the Evereni, Ro made her way to the human and questioned him about finding other Evereni. Despite being initially reluctant, he revealed to her that he had seen a pair of Evereni on a station near[1] the moon[6] Pantora around a year beforehand. When Ro left the house, she was followed by Nagor, who she confronted in an alley elsewhere in the settlement. Later, Ro talked about the public house while describing her trip to Dantooine in a message she recorded for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[7] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the entry where the the public house was mentioned.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

The public house appeared in a flashback in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]
