"What do you think you're doing?"
"Excuse me?"
"You keep looking around."
"Just trying to figure out what's going on."
"You a part of it?"
"Part of what?"
"Don't play dumb."
―The coastal defender stormtrooper and Cassian Andor[3]

In 5 BBY, a coastal defender stormtrooper served as part of the Galactic Empire's occupation force on the world Niamos. That year, he noticed the incognito thief Cassian Andor as the latter was heading to the Arkie's shop. Seeking to exercise his authority, the trooper accosted Andor, treating him as if he was suspected of being affiliated with a group of humans being pursued by Imperial forces at that time. After questioning Andor, the trooper instructed a KX-series security droid to watch him, and the thief was eventually transported to a courthouse for sentencing on various charges.

Biography[]

"Hang onto this one for me. I wanna check the shelter."
―The coastal defender stormtrooper, to a KX-series security droid on Cassian Andor[3]

A human[1] served as a coastal defender stormtrooper of the Galactic Empire[3] by 5 BBY.[4] That year,[3] he[2] served on[3] the world[5] Niamos as part of its Imperial occupation force. At one point, the stormtrooper was stationed on Pier Nine in front of the Arkie's shop while a pair of his fellow troopers were pursuing a group of humans on a beach. The pursuit was noticed by the thief Cassian Andor, who was residing on Niamos under the assumed identity "Keef Girgo" and was going to visit Arkie's. As Andor approached the venue, the coastal defender stormtrooper noticed him frequently looking around and stopped him. The trooper then began questioning Andor as to whether he was affiliated with the fleeing individuals.[3]

Pier Nine

The coastal defender stormtrooper accosted Cassian Andor on Niamos.

Their conversation was interrupted by the approach of the fugitives, at which point the trooper used his comlink to notify the Imperial forces of the sighting of the pursued humans. Although Andor casually offered to "wait" for the stormtrooper in case he intended to join in the pursuit, the trooper continued with the questioning as a pair of Imperial KX-series security droids approached their position while capturing several of the fleeing humans. The trooper then called the nearest droid over for assistance with Andor. Claiming he wanted to check a shelter, the trooper instructed the droid to "hang onto" Andor for him.[3]

As the trooper then walked over to the entrance to Arkie's and joined a conversation with two other coastal defender stormtroopers, the security droid interpreted his command literally, proceeding to hold Andor aloft in a choking grip. Andor, in turn, first attempted to convince the approaching droid that the trooper had merely meant for him to "watch" over him and, when that failed, attempted to call out to the trooper in order to have him clarify his instructions and thus help resolve the situation Andor was in. Ultimately, Andor was transported to a local courthouse, where he was sentenced to six years of prison labor for charges including "civil disruption," "anti-Imperial speech," "fleeing the scene of anti-Imperial activity," and "attempted damage to Imperial property."[3]

Personality and traits[]

"You look like you're sweating."
"Well, it's hot."
"Or you've been running."
"Why would I be running?"
"Because you're a part of it."
―The coastal defender stormtrooper and Cassian Andor[3]

During his service on Niamos,[3] the coastal defender stormtrooper sought to exercise his authority over civilians.[2] To that end, he accosted Cassian Andor, interpreting the latter's sweating and casting glances at his surroundings as indicators that Andor was affiliated with a group of humans that Imperial forces were pursuing at the time. The trooper also aggressively treated Andor's surprised reaction as an attempt at playing innocent.[3]

Equipment[]

"Pier Nine, Pier Nine, runners heading south!"
―The coastal defender stormtrooper, into his comlink[3]

The coastal defender stormtrooper wore[3] plastoid[6] shoretrooper armor. The trooper's armor set was similar to[3] that of the later enlisted[6] shoretrooper squad leaders,[7] but instead of a fabric kama skirt,[6] it featured[3] plastoid faulds and a pouch for storing blaster gas cartridge magazines—two elements that it had in common with armor of shoretrooper captains.[6] The trooper wielded a E-11 medium blaster rifle and was equipped with a comlink.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The coastal defender stormtrooper appeared in "Announcement," the seventh episode of the live-action series Andor's first season,[3] which was aired on October 19, 2022.[8] The character, although uncredited in the episode,[3] was voiced by[9][10] established Star Wars actor[11] Sam Witwer.[9][10]
