"Jedi cruiser Tranquility, this is General Luminara Unduli requesting permission to land."
"You are cleared, General. We await your prisoner's arrival."
―Unduli and Argyus, as Unduli prepares to transport Gunray onto the Tranquility[1]

The Tranquility was a Venator-class Star Destroyer of the Galactic Republic naval forces' Open Circle Fleet, where it served as the flagship of Jedi General Luminara Unduli and her fleet group during the Clone Wars. In 21 BBY, following the capture of Separatist leader and Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray, the Tranquility and its commander were due to transport the Viceroy to the planet Coruscant, where he was to stand trial for war crimes. However, while en route to Coruscant, the Star Destroyer was infiltrated by Sith assassin Asajj Ventress, who managed to retrieve Gunray and escape from the vessel, but not before causing extensive damage to the Tranquility.

Description[]

The command center of the Tranquility.

As a Venator-class Star Destroyer, the Tranquility possessed two command bridges and eight engine units, as well as escape pods. The Star Destroyer also retained a hangar bay that carried several Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry gunships and a ventral docking bay large enough to accommodate a single retrofitted Consular-class cruiser. Along the exterior of the vessel, the Tranquility was armed with eight port and starboard DBY-827 heavy turbolaser turrets,[3] which could be operated by the bridge,[1] and two port and starboard medium dual turbolaser cannons.[3] On its port and starboard hull, the Tranquility featured the emblem of the Open Circle Fleet.[1]

Within the Venator was a highly secure detention level that housed several cells, each of which were protected by a ray shield controlled by panels next to the cells. These shields were also powerful enough to withstand several blaster shots from a DC-15A blaster carbine and lightsaber strikes. Accessible by several turbolifts, the entrance of the detention level was a control center that could provide the status of the ship's functionality, such as its turbolifts, doors, propulsion and communications systems. The Tranquility also possessed a large engine room that could be accessed by either a door or the ship's ventilation system, and had three vertical reactors and walkways that stretched throughout the room on different, providing movement for the Tranquility's personnel.[1]

Transporting Nute Gunray[]

"Green Leader to Commander Gree, super battle droids have breached our hull."
―Green Leader, reporting to Commander Gree on the situation[1]
Tranquility

Jedi Master Luminara Unduli and Padawan Ahsoka Tano arrive at the Tranquility aboard a Consular-class cruiser.

In 22 BBY,[6] during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems, Senator Padmé Amidala conducted a mission to the planet Rodia in order to ensure that the planet's loyalty remained to the Republic. However, Amidala was captured by Separatist battle droids under orders from Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray following her arrival, which prompted Amidala's protocol droid, C-3PO, to contact Republic clone troopers through a military-use code and reported the situation to them. As a result, the Republic dispatched the Tranquility[7] and its commander, Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, alongside Padawan Ahsoka Tano and the clone troopers of the 41st Elite Corps' Green Company,[1] to Rodia to help the Senator and capture the Viceroy, where he was to be brought to the Republic capital, the planet Coruscant, to stand trial for his crimes.[7]

Afterwards, in 21 BBY,[8] Gunray was taken aboard a retrofitted Consular-class cruiser, with both Jedi and several clone troopers escorting him. en route to the Star Destroyer, Unduli contacted the Tranquility and requested permission to dock with Gunray in hand. Greeted by Senate Commando Captain Faro Argyus, the cruiser was granted to dock and proceeded to take position in the Venator's ventral docking bay. Upon arriving aboard the Tranquility, a squad of Senate Commandos alongside Clone Commander CC-1004, otherwise known as "Gree," escorted the Viceroy to a cell in the detention center.[1]

The Tranquility comes under attack from Confederacy of Independent Systems forces.

While detained within the ray shielded cell, Gunray underwent an interrogation conducted by both Jedi, who hoped to discover secrets of the Confederacy. Amid their interrogation, however, the Tranquility was attacked a group of three Droch-class broading ships escorted by a squad of Vulture-class droid starfighters. Attempting to shoot them down, the boarding ships managed to pierce through the Star Destroyer's hull and proceeded to unload a number of B2-series super battle droids into the Tranquility's hangar bay against several clone troopers of Green Company, who attempted to repel the battle droids, resulting in a firefight aboard the Tranquility.[1]

Battling Separatist forces[]

Skirmish on the Tranquility

Clone troopers engage B2-series super battle droids in a firefight aboard the Tranquility.

Despite their efforts, the super battle droids managed to eliminate the troopers within the hangar and proceeded to press forward, whose movements to the detention level were reported to the Clone Commander by the Green Leader of the Republic company, prompting Unduli and Gree to assist the clone troopers. However, while the droids pressed further into the Tranquility, which thereby diverted the clones away from the hangar, the Sith assassin and Dark Acolyte, Asajj Ventress, who was sent by Separatist Head of State Count Dooku to retrieve or execute the Viceroy, managed to exit one of the boarding ships and secretly make her way for the Tranquility's engine room through the ship's ventilation system while the droids continued to fight the clones.[1]

As the clones continued to engage the battle droids within the Tranquility, Ventress entered the Star Destroyer's engine room and proceeded to plant several thermal detonators throughout the entire room, while also avoiding detection from the WED-15 Treadwell droid, 327-T. Afterwards, the Sith assassin returned to the ventilation system and made her way to the detention level, entering through a hole created in the ceiling with her lightsabers, where she was forced to engage Tano and Senate Commandos. In belief that the initial attack had been successfully repelled, Unduli was prompted back to the detention level after sensing Tano's danger through the Force.[1]

Reactor boom

The Tranquility is crippled in an explosion caused by Ventress.

While Tano and Ventress fought, the Sith assassin managed to release the Viceroy from his cell, which subsequently resulted in the Togruta becoming trapped within the cell as she attempted to attack Ventress. However, upon Tano's entrapment, Unduli arrived and freed the Padawan as the two briefly locked blades with the Dark Acolyte, forcing Ventress to surrender for a moment as her explosives proceeded to detonate throughout the engine room, providing Ventress an opportunity to escape. As a result of the explosion, the engine room became engulfed in flames and crippled the Tranquility in its entirety by disabling its communications and propulsion systems, as well as the Star Destroyer's system of turbolifts and doors.[1]

Dueling Ventress[]

After Ventress fled from the two Jedi, Master Unduli left to search for her while Tano remained in the detention level. Tracking her to the ship's engine room, Unduli engaged the assassin upon entering the room, resulting in her vision becoming impaired as Ventress struck a pipe that sent steam into the Jedi Master's left eye. After prolonged dueling within the engine room, Ventress managed to knock Unduli down further, while also trapping her underneath several metal pipes running along the ceiling of the Tranquility's engine room. However, before the assassin could kill the trapped Jedi Master, Tano entered the room and freed Unduli, resulting in a duel between the two Jedi and the Sith assassin throughout the engine room.[1]

Ventress duels with Unduli and Tano

Argyus and Gree dueled, and Gree looked to have the upper hand after dealing a serious blow to Argyus only for Gunray to knock out the clone from behind. Argyus then signaled to Ventress, who made a quick escape from the Jedi. Argyus and Gunray proceeded to make their escape from the Tranquility, onboard the cruiser that had originally brought the Separatist leader from Rodia, and the pair are soon joined by Ventress, who jettisoned from the Tranquility via escape pod. Argyus gloated about the success of the mission, but was then killed by Ventress.[1]

Unduli and Tano, aboard the Tranquility, reported the situation to Yoda and Anakin Skywalker. Despite losing Gunray, they believed they could track him since he had commandeered a Republic ship—information that was passed onto the nearby Jedi Master Kit Fisto. Fisto later tracked the ship to Vassek 3, where he unknowingly led his team into a trap laid by Dooku, venturing into the lair of General Grievous.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Tranquility first appeared in "Bombad Jedi,"[9] the eighth episode of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season, which originally aired on November 21, 2008.[10] The vessel was later identified in the first season's ninth episode "Cloak of Darkness,"[1] which originally aired on December 5 of that same year.[11]

The catwalks and clusters of cylinders seen in the engine room are an architectural nod to the gravity control room aboard the Super Dimensional Fortres (SDF-1) from the Macross anime.[12]
