Rok Buran was a human[1] male Jedi Master active during the High Republic Era.

Biography[]

He led the Republic Pathfinder team Outer Rim Expedition Two-Five-Two, the other members of which were his Padawan Maliq, Joneth, Branda, and the communications droid EX-8C.[2] Around 382 BBY,[6] the team was betrayed and ambushed during an expedition to the planet Gloam, with Buran left as the only survivor after being left for dead due to injuries inflicted by some of the planet's monsters. Buran made his way to an old Jedi temple on the planet, where he took shelter while sending out EX-8C with a distress signal which was discovered by Master Silandra Sho's Pathfinder team.[2]

After leaving Aubadas, Buran joined another Pathfinder team onboard the Pathfinder ship Witherbloom. He talked to Xinith Tarl about losing his previous team on Gloam. Their ship came under attack and was rammed by a craft. The collision caused both ships to crash on a nearby planet. Buran helped Tarl who had become trapped under some debris and was injured. When the pilot Pako informed the Jedi that the ship was going to explode, he questioned Pako if the planet's atmosphere was safe. Realizing the danger, Buran picked up Tarl and fled the exploding ship along with the rest of the crew.[1]

He put Tarl down and had the medic Ambar attend to the injured Bith. The rest of the team had a meeting and decided to check out the other crashed ship to see if there were any supplies or survivors. They made their way to the crash site and decided to split into teams to search the wreckage. Buran and Padawan Coron Solstus investigated the bridge. As they worked their way deeper into the ship, Buran was questioned by Solstus about the loss of Maliq. The pair got to the controls and started to reroute the power but were overcome by something that was clouding their senses.[1]

Solstus was attacked by Kane but Buran defended the Padawan and disarmed the Path of the Closed Fist member. He instructed Solstus to bind Kane's hands and questioned the man about his mission. Buran asked Kane if he thought the Jedi were his enemies and the man responded that the creature outside the ship would bring the Jedi Order to its knees. Buran questioned Solstus on the status of the equipment on the bridge and instructed the Padawan to use the local sensors to get a fix on the creature on the hull of the ship. He decided to risk heading back to the other part of the ship to warn the rest of the survivors about the beast that was attempting to kill them. When Buran thought the path was clear, he, Solstus, and Kane dashed for the other wreckage. However, the Jedi were overcome by the creature which proceeded to kill Kane. Buran ordered Solstus to return to the safety of the front part of the wreckage. Pako was able to electrify the hull, driving off the creature temporarily. The Jedi Master and Padawan ran back to the other part of the ship but were affected by the creature before they could enter the ship. Trapped outside, Buran used his lightsaber to cut a hole in the hull so the pair could escape the beast.[7]

Fighting off the effect of the creature, Buran was able to carve a hole in the side of the ship. Once inside, he used the Force to wedge a container into the hole and blocking the animal from entering. Solstus confided in Buran that the creature scared him and Buran assured him that while he felt it to, it was the duty of the jedi to face their fears and stand up to them. The pair started to search for the other survivors but ran into a group of Path of the Open Hand members. Buran convinced them to enter a truce with the Jedi group and they all made their way back to the cargo hold where the rest of the survivors were. He intervened when Pako and Shalish accused each other of aggression and stated the Path members were there for medical assistance. He reaffirmed that the Jedi helped whoever needed assistance. To create space for medical treatment, Buran and the others moved large gemstones that were in the cargo bay, unaware that they were actually Nameless eggs. Buran and Solstus conferred with Badani about the creature and its effect on them. He insisted that they had to find a way to neutralize the creature and find a way off the world so that they could warn the Jedi Council. Pako came up with a plan to overload the engines and induce an explosion that would kill the creature. Despite Badani's misgivings, Buran agreed with the plan. He decided to accompany Solstus as they returned to the front part of the wreckage in an attempt to restart the engines remotely. He questioned the Path members about the creature, who denied knowing anything about it despite Kane bragging that it would destroy the Jedi Order.[8]

Buran and Solstus returned to the hole in the side of the ship and discussed their plan. Buran would draw off the creature so Solstus could connect the two parts of the wreckage together via cable. When done, Solstus would return to the survivors while Buran would draw the creature back to the wreckage to be trapped inside. The Padawan expressed concern for Buran, but he assured him thathe would be alright. The Jedi Master removed the container that blocked the hole, and sprinted away from the ship. He felt the effect of the creature, but couldn't locate it until he noticed it had doubled back and entered the wreckage behind them. He ordered Solstus to continue with his part of the plan and then ran back inside the ship to warn the other survivors.[8]

As Buran moved through the ship looking for the creature, he could feel the effects. The Jedi came across the body of Wole who had been fatally wounded. He returned to the rest of the survivors and let them know that the two members of the Path had been killed by the creature. Once the engine overload was started, Buran assisted Geth with evacuating the ship. Badani ordered Buran to get the survivors out of the ship and quietly requested him to look after Solstus. Geth questioned the Jedi why he was helping him since his injuries were slowing them down and making them more vulnerable to attack. Buran responded that it was the right thing to do to protect life and it was a Jedi's duty. They got clear of the ship and it exploded. Solstus attempted to return to the blazing wreckage to look for Badani, but Buran stopped him and comforted the Padawan.[3]

Equipment[]

Buran wielded a green-bladed lightsaber. He had a custom-built dagger, which he used on missions and for whittling.[4]
