Reva's double-bladed Inquisitor Lightsaber,[6] also known as Reva's lightsaber[7] and the Third Sister's lightsaber,[8] was a lightsaber wielded by the Jedi hunter known as the Third Sister, also known as Reva, during her service to the Galactic Empire. It was similar in appearance to other double-bladed spinning lightsabers wielded by Imperial Inquisitors. As the hunt for Obi-Wan Kenobi came to an end, Reva would lay down her lightsaber, seeking to turn her back on the dark side of the Force.

Specifications[]

While many Inquisitors carried their lightsabers on their backs, the Third Sister kept hers hang on her right side.[5] The saber was able to be split into two separate blades with the ringed emitter retracting at the sides so the hilt can extend and split apart.[2] This allowed Reva to utilize her Jar'Kai skills, which she perfected under the Grand Inquisitor's tutelage. The saber's kyber crystals once belonged to a Jedi who was killed during the Great Jedi Purge and were bled by Reva herself.[4]

History[]

In 9 BBY,[9] the Third Sister utilized the lightsaber during the Inquisitors' pursuit of the Jedi Nari, which led them to a saloon in Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine. When Nari attempted to escape, the Third Sister drew her lightsaber and struck at him, but the Grand Inquisitor used the Force to stop her blade, leaving only Nari's left shoulder injured. As Nari fled the scene, the Grand Inquisitor chastised the Third Sister for her recklessness to kill a Jedi he had planned to interrogate. As the Inquisitors searched for information on the Jedi's whereabouts, the Third Sister threatened to cut off the hands of those who would not speak, making example of a woman who claimed that the Galactic Empire had no authority over the Outer Rim Territories. The Third Sister then turned her attention to moisture farmer Owen Lars and threatened him with her lightsaber, but the Fifth Brother ordered her to stand down.[1]

Later, the Third Sister would brandish her lightsaber on the planet Daiyu, where she had kidnapped Princess Leia Organa in order to lure Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi out of hiding. As she cornered Kenobi in a shipyard, the Third Sister was stopped by the Grand Inquisitor, who ordered her aside to avoid her losing their quarry. The Third Sister instead used her lightsaber to stab the Grand Inquisitor in the abdomen.[5] Although Kenobi escaped with Organa, the Third Sister was able to capture the young princess on Mapuzo,[10] bringing her to Fortress Inquisitorius on the moon Nur.[11] She would then use her lightsaber to defend against an attack on the fortress, deflecting cannon fire from two T-47 airspeeders flown by members of the Hidden Path.[11]

The Third Sister used the attack as an opportunity to track down the location of the Path's base and Kenobi along with them. She led the attack on Jabiim and used her lightsaber to cut through the hideout doors, leading to Kenobi's brief capture. Kenobi uncovered the Third Sister's true plan to assassinate Darth Vader, and as he escaped, the Third Sister used her lightsaber to strike at Vader. However, the Sith Lord used the Force to stop the blade and pull the weapon from her hands, splitting it in two and dueling her with one half. Vader quickly defeated the lone Inquisitor, stabbing her with her own lightsaber revealing that the Grand Inquisitor had survived her betrayal.[2]

The Third Sister survived her injury and made her way to Tatooine after seeing fragments of a transmission by Bail Organa that mentioned Owen Lars. She attacked the Lars Homestead and attempted to kill an unconscious Luke Skywalker with her lightsaber, but refused at the thought of killing children as Vader had done to her fellow Jedi Initiates. As Kenobi returned to Tatooine after a duel with Vader, Reva returned Skywalker to his family. Kenobi comforted Reva and encouraged her that she had not become Vader, and Reva laid her lightsaber to rest in the sand.[12]

Behind the scenes[]

"[Lucasfilm VP and executive creative director] Doug Chiang was instrumental in original concepts for the Reva saber. The functionality of the handle separating into two separate sabers offered a challenge in that the halves didn't look right with the circle simply splitting in half. We imagined that as the saber splits into two pieces, there would be internal handle extensions to the grip, and retracting guards that pulled in on themselves. Similarly, we had to imagine how the half-circle version that she normally carries, becomes a full circle for when it spins."
―Brad Elliott[13]

Reva's double-bladed Inquisitor Lightsaber first appeared in the first episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series,[1] which was released on May 26, 2022.[14] It was first identified by a StarWars.com article discussing the Hasbro products revealed at Celebration Anaheim, 2022.[6] It was first identified as Reva's lightsaber in a video on the Star Wars Youtube channel discussing news and reveals from Celebration Anaheim.[7] It was first identified as the Third Sister's lightsaber by a StarWars.com article about the Reva Force FX Elite Lightsaber.[8]

The lightsaber was a completely original design for the Third Sister.[15]. Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang created many of the original concepts for the lightsaber. The functionality of splitting into two separate sabers was a challenge for the prop makers because the two halves didn't look right with the circle splitting in half. Propmaster Brad Elliott and his team imagined that as the weapon splits into two pieces, there were internal handle extensions to the grip and retracting guards that pulled in on themselves. They also had to imagine how the half-circle version becomes a full circle when it spins. Designers decided that the semi-circle version would telescope out to create the full circle.[13] Moses Ingram, the actor who played the Third Sister,[1] received the lightsaber as a gift from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.[15] The weapon was customized to fit Ingram's hands.[16]

Ingram spent a lot of time icing her hands before she learned how to wield her lightsaber.[17] Elliott and his team made sure that the size of the rings and handles would fit their intended character.[13] Ingram received fight training from Ewan McGregor,[18] the actor who played Obi-Wan Kenobi,[1] and he showed her encouragement as she fumbled through rookie mistakes.[18] During training, Ingram learned what needed to change with the lightsaber, so it went through several processes. Depending on the scene that was being shot, Ingram used three different lightsabers: a full length prop, a medium prop, and a very small prop. Ingram also had a practice lightsaber that she was sent home with.[16] The lightsaber's transformation into a full circle was accomplished with Industrial Light & Magic's visual effects accentuating the practical prop.[13] The props department took the lightsaber away every time Ingram was off camera.[19]
