"We're in range, Beebee. Activate the encryption recorder."
―Kazuda Xiono, to BB-8[1]

A Republic encryption recorder was an espionage device used to intercept and record encrypted data from a nearby source. In 34 ABY, Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono used a Republic encryption recorder to intercept an encrypted data transmission that the First Order informant and ace pilot Marnia Un'la'na intended to send to Major Elrik Vonreg during the All Aces Battle Royale race. Though his recorder was destroyed when another ship hit his borrowed racer during the competition, Xiono recovered Un'la'na's data from the ship's backup system and sent it to Resistance General Leia Organa.

Description[]

"…then install a small Republic encryption recorder to intercept Marnia's data transfer without her knowing."
―Kazuda Xiono, to BB-8[1]

A small gray device, a Republic encryption recorder was a type of espionage equipment. It was roughly square-shaped and could be attached to a racer's communications system, allowing the vessel to intercept, record, and copy encrypted and transmitted data. Republic encryption recorders had limited range and needed to be close to the source of the transmission it was intercepting.[1]

History[]

"Yes, we're locked! I knew you could do it, Beebee-Ate! Now I've just got to keep this thing airborne long enough to get all of the data she's trying to transmit."
―Kazuda Xiono to BB-8, while using the Republic encryption recorder to intercept a transmission[1]

While operating as a Resistance spy on the supertanker fuel depot Colossus[1] in 34 ABY,[2] the former New Republic pilot[3] Kazuda Xiono borrowed a racer from a pilot visiting the platform to participate in the All Aces Battle Royale race. He installed a Republic encryption recorder in the starship, intending to use it during the race to intercept an encrypted transmission that the First Order informant and ace pilot Marnia Un'la'na planned to send mid-race to First Order Major[1] Elrik Vonreg.[3]

Kazuda Xiono activated his Republic encryption recorder as Marnia Un'la'na began transmitting a data cache.

Shortly afterward, Xiono participated in the race under the name "Bolt-Shatterer-K," flying in the borrowed ship alongside the astromech droid BB-8. When he flew close to Un'la'na's racer during the competition, Xiono activated his Republic encryption recorder as the informant began her transmission to Vonreg. After[1] the ace pilot Hype Fazon's ship—the Green Ace[3]—hit Xiono's ship, causing him to briefly fall out of range. The spy continued following Un'la'na's ship until the encryption recorder's connection to her transmission was restored.[1]

However, when another vessel hit his racer and destroyed the encryption recorder, the Resistance spy was forced to pull away and crash in a hangar. Afterward, Xiono bemoaned the loss of the device and declared the mission a failure. However, after realizing that his borrowed vessel had a data log backup, he recovered the data of Un'la'na's transmission and sent it to Resistance General Leia Organa.[1]

Behind the scenes[]
