"And the food. That I crave."
"Oh, yeah?"
"Handmade dumplings stuffed with protato and cushnip."
―Tulakt and Cal Kestis — (audio) Listen (file info)[1]

Protatoes were a type of food used an ingredient in Protato Namba patties and as a filling in dumplings alongside cushnip.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

In the current Star Wars canon, protatos were first mentioned in the 2022 non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, published by TT Games. The player can first hear the bounty hunter's advertisement of protatos when playing as Kenobi and R4-P17 during the story campaign for the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, but the dialogue can be heard at any point while near the night market in the Uscru District.[2] They first appeared in a canonical source in the 2023 video game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Protatos originated within the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were first mentioned in the 2002 novel The New Jedi Order: Traitor, written by Matthew Stover as the thirteenth volume in the series Star Wars: The New Jedi Order.[3] They went on to appear in the 2003 massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, published by Sony Online Entertainment.[4]

Non-canon history[]

"You need protatos? I got sacks full of 'em. Full of protein and delicious when fried. There are no CONS to buying PROtatos!"
―A bounty hunter in Coruscant's Uscru District[2]

In LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, protatos are described as high in protein and able to be fried. During the campaign depicting the events of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, a bounty hunter on the Core Worlds planet Coruscant advertises protatos she is selling in a night market in the planet's Uscru District. The vendor emphasizes their high protein content and claims that they will taste delicious when fried. While advertising her protatos, she is overheard by the player—as Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his astromech droid R4-P17—who are in the area while pursuing bounty hunter Zam Wesell.[2]
