Maalva was the king of the planet Toydaria following the death of his uncle, Katuunko. Maalva was a harsh ruler who would pit his subjects against each other in the Toydarian seasonal wars for his own gain. During the Imperial Period, Maalva sold Toydarians from remote villages into Imperial slavery.

Biography[]

KatuunkoPresiding-SL

Maalva became king of Toydaria after the assassination of his uncle, Katuunko (pictured).

Maalva was the nephew of[1] the Toydarian[2] Katuunko, who was king of the planet Toydaria in Hutt Space. Following Katuunko's assassination[1] by the Dark Acolyte Savage Opress[2] in 21 BBY,[3] Maalva succeeded him as king. Maalva maintained his power by recruiting ambitious vassals who were loyal to him. During the Toydarian seasonal wars[1]—a cycle of violence driven by changes in Toydaria's climate approximately once every three decades[4]—Maalva neglected his royal responsibility to resolve the conflicts. Instead, he allowed the rival Toydarian factions to deal with matters on their own, and would occasionally incite conflicts in order to solidify his own power. Maalva's harsh rule also made Toydarian farmers wary of outsiders.[1]

Toydaria left the Galactic Republic following Katuunko's death. After[1] the Republic transformed into the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY,[5] Maalva tolerated the Imperial presence on Toydaria by the order of his Hutt overlords. King Maalva profited during the Imperial Period by ordering the abduction of Toydarian villagers in remote settlements and selling them into Imperial slavery. The king was paid substantially in the deal, and starships bearing his royal seal were exempt from customs inspections. His dealings were kept secret from his own councilors.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Maalva was a cantankerous, conniving, and petty braggart, in contrast to his uncle's mild temperament. He ruled harshly and was politically savvy enough to incite conflicts among his servants to secure his own power. He was willing to profit from the enslavement of Toydarians and kept his arrangements hidden from members of his council. While benefiting from his own scheming, Maalva would blame Toydaria's seeming lack of prosperity on the Empire, the Hutts, or on a bad roll of a chance cube.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

Maalva was mentioned in Lords of Nal Hutta, a 2015 sourcebook for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying game.[1]
