"If we can't have it, no one can."
―The leader of the Ossiki Confederacy, on destroying food supplies during the seasonal wars[2]

The Toydarian seasonal wars were a recurring cycle of conflicts between the Toydarians of the planet Toydaria. The wars were driven by the planet's climate, as roughly once every thirty years conditions such as famines and droughts limited food availability. Various factions were involved in the conflicts, including rival confederacies and subjects of the Toydarian monarchy. During one of the wars, the Ossiki Confederacy Army became infamous for poisoning and destroying rival food supplies. The wars often ended once Toydaria's climate improved.

Prelude[]

Toydaria TEA

Toydaria's climate cycle led to repeated wars.

The planet Toydaria in Hutt Space[4] had a cyclical climate that led to poor growing seasons and subsequent famines[2] approximately once every thirty standard years.[4] The native Toydarian's diet consisted of large quantities of high energy sugar-rich food,[2] and many Toydarians worked as fishers and farmers in tree-top villages. These citizens gathered their food between flood seasons on behalf of their local lords, and the majority of their crops were transported offworld as tribute to the Hutt species. Devastating monsoons and crop-killing spores also caused food shortages,[1] leading to skirmishes.[5] and escalating into wars.[2]

Toydarians became accustomed to squabbling over resources[1] and often felt that stealing from their neighbors or even poisoning their food was the most effective method of survival in times of difficulty, which escalated into the formation of armies.[4] Responsibility fell to the king of Toydaria to resolve the conflicts.[1] Among the factions involved in the wars were rival confederacies, including the Ossiki Confederacy,[2] along with individuals such as fiefdom servants and Toydarian vassals.[1]

The wars[]

The rival Toydarian confederacies fought bitterly during the conflicts. Many Toydarians,[4] including the leader of the Ossiki Confederacy, believed that other groups should be denied food if they were unable to claim it.[2] As a result, the Ossiki Confederacy Army became infamous for using chemical weapons[6] to poison[2] and destroy the food supplies of rival confederacies.[6] Rival clans participated in the conflict as well.[3]

Watto (pictured) fought in the wars in his youth and received lifelong injuries.

During a period of drought within the Great Peace of the Republic, the young Toydarian Watto joined the Ossiki Confederacy Army. He was permanently injured in the conflict, receiving a broken left tusk and a crippled leg. The war ended when the drought rescinded,[2] and Watto left the army to settle on the planet Tatooine[7] by approximately 38 BBY.[8] The Toydarian King Maalva,[1] whose reign began in 21 BBY[9] and continued into the Imperial Period, allowed his vassals to settle their conflicts on their own, and occassionally incited quarrels to consolidate his own power.[1]

Some wars over food supplies were among the bloodiest in Toydaria's history.[10] In the pattern of the seasonal wars, they ended once conditions improved[4] or supply issues were resolved, and life for the Toydarians quickly returned to normal[11] until the next resource scarcity.[4] Outside of the wars, the Toydarians had a quiet existence during the Imperial Period, and Toydaria was a sleepy corner of the galaxy by the time of the New Jedi Order.[5] The Toydarians' culture of warfare was acknowledged in the anthropological texts The Essential Guide to Alien Species[11] and The New Essential Guide to Alien Species, both published by the time of New Republic control of the galaxy and based on the findings of Senior Anthropologist Mammon Hoole.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

The Toydarian seasonal wars were first mentioned in The Essential Guide to Alien Species by Ann Margaret Lewis, published in 2001.[11] They were first identified by name in the Ossiki Confederacy Army's entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 2008.[6]

  8. Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force states that Watto was present on Tatooine not long after Anakin Skywalker arrived there when he was roughly three years old. The book also states that Skywalker was born in 41 BBY. Therefore, Watto had settled on Tatooine by approximately 38 BBY.
  9. Lords of Nal Hutta states that King Maalva succeeded the throne of Toydaria after the assassination of his uncle, King Katuunko, which was portrayed in "Witches of the Mist." The Official Star Wars Fact File Part 7 (KAT1–2, King Katuunko) dates "Senate Murders" to 21 BBY, while The Official Star Wars Fact File Part 59 (MOR1–2, Mortis) dates "Overlords" to 21 BBY. Since StarWars Star Wars: The Clone Wars Chronological Episode Order on StarWars.com (backup link) places "Witches of the Mist" between those two episodes, it can be concluded that "Witches of the Mist" also takes place in 21 BBY.
